The national park was F E R N S established in 1968. In 1994, a cooperative agreement with the California Department of Parks and Recreation added Del Norte Coast, Prairie Creek, Athyriaceae – Lady Fern Family and Jedediah Smith Redwoods state parks to form a single administrative Athyrium filix-femina var. cyclosporum • northwestern lady fern unit. Together they comprise about 133,000 acres (540 km2), including 37 miles of coast line. Almost half of the remaining old growth redwood forests Blechnaceae – Deer Fern Family are protected in these four parks. -

Introduction The list of monocotyledonous culms, flower stalks, rhizomes and stem-features is a result of the studies published in tree volumes: - Vol.I Anatomy of grass culms (Schweingruber and Berger 2017) - Vol. II Anatomy of culms and rhizomes of sedges (Schweingruber and Berger 2018) - Vol. III Anatomy of culms and flower stalks of monocotyledonous plants (Schweingruber and Berger 2018) Here we present the first time a list of features which is applicable on the whole spectrum of monocotyledonous plants in temperate zones of the northern hemisphere. The definition of features is primarily based on double stained microscopic slides from recently collected material. POPULATIONS OF INITIAL STAGES ABSTRACT: The structure and the dynamics are discussed of pioneer populations of Corynephorus canescens (L.) P. B. and their role in the fixing of sands, and fonn~tion of initial communities. On flying dry sands, they show many features of expansive populations, but their . efficiency in fixing sands is fairly low, primarily because of their highly aggregated spatial structure. In more fertile biotopes, free growth of C. canescens populations is limited by the competitively stronger grasses: Festuca psammophila (Hackel) Krajina and Koeleria glauca (Schkuhr) DC. C. canescens has been found to h.ave almost completely retreated from areas coloriized by Polytrichum piliferum Schreb. Niles WITH INTRODUCTION AND BOTANICAL NOTES By Aones Chase nrntODTJCTiON The Essai d?une Nouvelle Agrostographie ; ou Nouveaux Genres des Graminees; avec figures representant les Oaracteres de tous les Genres, by A. M. F. J. Palisot de Beauvois, published in 1812, is, from the standpoint of the nomenclature of grasses, a very important work, its importance being due principally to its innumerable errors, less so because of its scientific value. In this small volume 69 new genera are proposed and some 640 new species, new binomials, and new names are published. Of the 69 genera proposed 31 are to-day recognized as valid, and of the 640 names about 61 are commonly accepted. There is probably not a grass flora of any considerable region anywhere in the world that does not contain some of Beauvois' names. Many of the new names are made in such haphazard fashion that they are incorrectly listed in the Index Kewensis. There are, besides, a number of misspelled names that have found their way into botanical literature. The inaccuracies are so numerous and the cita- tions so incomplete that only a trained bibliographer* could solve the many puzzles presented. Cornelia D. Niles in connection with her work on the bibliography of grasses, maintained in the form of a card catalogue in the Grass Herbarium, worked out the basis in literature of each of these new names. The botanical problems involved, the interpretation of descriptions and figures, were worked out by Agnes Chase, who is also respon- sible for the translation and summaries from the Advertisement, Introduction, and Principles. -

[email protected] Grasses are simplified plants and the leaf is one of the few organs that provides taxonomic characters. Leaf anatomy and epidermis (and associated structures) have been used as characters in taxonomy of Poaceae since the 1930s [1]. Such characters became well-established and accepted in the 1960s with Metcalfe’s investigations [2]. However, recent research casts doubts on the consistency and reliability of such characters [e.g. 3]. Grasses are highly adaptable plants due to their marked phenotypic plasticity [4]. In order to assess the reliability of leaf characters, species that occur in very contrasting habitats constitute the ideal case study. Corynephorus canescens (L.) P.Beauv. and Antinoria agrostidea (DC.) Parl. were selected; the former occurs from coastal sandy dunes to high altitude, the latter survives submerged and in ponds that dry-out during summer. Three accessions for each species and for each habitat were investigated. Leaf blades were treated following our modified versions of the methods described by Dop & Gautié [5] and Halbritter [6]. SEM observations were under a JEOL JSM T220. Analysis of structures was standardized [7, 8]. A number of leaf characters proved to be plastic. Density of exodermic elements is higher (Figure 1. A-B) and sclerenchyma more developed in the driest habitats. Bulliform cells are far more developed in Antinoria growing in dry conditions than in submerged plants; in Corynephorus bulliform cells are poorly developed whatever the water available. -

Site Improvement Plan Breckland
Improvement Programme for England's Natura 2000 Sites (IPENS) Planning for the Future Site Improvement Plan Breckland Site Improvement Plans (SIPs) have been developed for each Natura 2000 site in England as part of the Improvement Programme for England's Natura 2000 sites (IPENS). Natura 2000 sites is the combined term for sites designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) and Special Protected Areas (SPA). This work has been financially supported by LIFE, a financial instrument of the European Community. The plan provides a high level overview of the issues (both current and predicted) affecting the condition of the Natura 2000 features on the site(s) and outlines the priority measures required to improve the condition of the features. It does not cover issues where remedial actions are already in place or ongoing management activities which are required for maintenance. The SIP consists of three parts: a Summary table, which sets out the priority Issues and Measures; a detailed Actions table, which sets out who needs to do what, when and how much it is estimated to cost; and a set of tables containing contextual information and links. Once this current programme ends, it is anticipated that Natural England and others, working with landowners and managers, will all play a role in delivering the priority measures to improve the condition of the features on these sites. The SIPs are based on Natural England's current evidence and knowledge. The SIPs are not legal documents, they are live documents that will be updated to reflect changes in our evidence/knowledge and as actions get underway. -
