In the late 1980s the distinguished interpreter Kató Lomb researched historical and contemporary lomb polyglots in an effort to understand their linguistic feats. Grounded in real-world experience, they will be of interest to linguaphiles who are seeking to supplement their theoretical knowledge of language learning. kató lomb (1909–2003) was called “possibly HARMONY the most accomplished polyglot in the world” by linguist Stephen Krashen. One of the pioneers of simultaneous interpreting, Lomb worked in 16 languages in her native Hungary and abroad. Non-Indigenous people who had experienced out-of-home care also questioned why their stories were not recognised. This thesis addresses those concerns, examining the origins and history of the welfare systems of NSW and Tasmania between 1880 and 1940. Tasmania, which had no specific policies on race or Indigenous children, provides fruitful ground for comparison with NSW, which had separate welfare systems for children defined as Indigenous and non-Indigenous. This thesis draws on the records of these systems to examine the gaps between ideology and policy and practice. The development of welfare systems was uneven, but there are clear trends. In the years 1880 to 1940 non-Indigenous welfare systems placed their faith in boarding-out (fostering) as the most humane method of caring for neglected and destitute children, although institutions and juvenile apprenticeship were never supplanted by fostering. Concepts of child welfare shifted from charity to welfare; that is, from simple removal to social interventions that would assist children's reform. -

People who donʼt know any better are always talking about the New England winter, but you can take it from someone whoʼs lived up here all her life: The only good thing about a New England winter is that it only comes once a year. Around here, you can always tell when summer is on its way by the way Jay McFarland dresses. When he sheds that old bearskin coat of his and gets out of his drag-ass overalls, you know it wonʼt be long before the campers will be here. Oh, that McFarland! The gossiping cornballs around here tell a lot of wild stories about him if you give them half a chance, but thereʼs not a word of truth to most of them. One story even has it that McFarland used to be in the movies. Thatʼll give you a rough idea of the kind of purebred gossip that goes through these woods. Course McFarland is a bit different. -

Ruth had pledged herself to keep Nelson's position for him till he should return, and Amy had promised to wait for Ruth. Lenard, a polyglot writer and translator, rewrote his autobiography three times, in three different languages (in German, English, and Hungarian). This process of self-translation created a fascinating web of autobiographical texts, which invite a multiscopic reading. Following in the footsteps of 18th century parodists, Lenard challenges a great number of protocols associated with life-writing. The most important among these is the authority of the proper name as a guarantee of autobiographical authenticity. To challenge the authority of the proper name Lenard purposely multiplies his own authorial identities, for example by claiming that “A. L. is only a pseudonym.” Thus, the word ‘self-plagiarism’ acquires in Lenard’s case a double meaning, implying both that the author plagiarizes his own text and that he plagiarizes his own self. The paper explains why existing theories of self-translation cannot be applied to Lenard’s texts, and why his unique case can enrich future studies of this topic. Reviewed by András Kiséry,* The City College of New York (CUNY) Lénárd Sándor: Világok Vándora is the first book written on Sándor Lénárd, or Alexander Lenard (1910-1972), a fascinating polymath and polyglot best known for his translation of A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh into Latin, but the three volumes of life-writing he published in the last decade of his career clearly deserve critical attention, as well. The two authors have both written about Lenard before. Zsuzsa Vajdovics has not only translated some of Lenard’s works from Hungarian into Italian and from Italian into Hungarian, she has also been active in helping to bring Lenard’s papers to Hungarian archives and in organizing a Lenard Seminar, and later a Lenard Society, in Budapest. Her co-authored book with Helga Lénárt-Cheng draws on their previously published work (e.g., in this journal's vol. 7, 2014, Lénárt-Cheng's article: https://ahea.pitt.edu/ojs/index.php/ahea/article/view/3), but this is a more inclusive monograph that aims to encompass Lenard's entire oeuvre and provide a starting point for further scholarship on his work. -
