The Story Chapter 1 The McGregor Story TThe McGregor story starts in 1877 when Amasa Stone, the legendary capitalist and preeminent Cleveland philanthropist, and his wife, Julia, built and endowed one of the first private organizations in Cleveland specifically for the care of seniors — the Home for Aged Women, later to be renamed the Amasa Stone House, on what is now East 46th Street and Cedar Avenue. After training as a carpenter and building contractor in his native Massachusetts and moving to Cleveland in 1850, Amasa turned his considerable ambition to transportation. He built the Lake Shore Railroad, which ran between Erie, Pennsylvania and Cleveland as part of the New York Central. During the post-Civil War industrial boom, he found himself among America’s elite railroad builders. He also worked with his brother-in- law, William Howe, in designing a truss bridge to sustain heavy loads of rail cargo over short spans, like small gullies and ravines. However, historian Mark Thompson, the author of Graveyard of the Lakes has estimated that there are over shipwrecks on the bottom of the Great Lakes. When a harbor tugboat directed the Hadley to divert to Superior harbor, the captain of the Hadley ordered an immediate turn to port, failing to notice the direction of the Wilson or to blow the required whistle signals. Her Fathers’ Daughter: Flora Stone Mather and Her Gifts to Cleveland Cleveland’s best-known woman philanthropist took no credit for her generosity: “I feel so strongly that I am one of God’s stewards. Large means without effort of mine, have been put into my hands; and I must use them as I know my Heavenly Father would have me, and as my dear earthly father would have me, were he here.” 1 So Flora Stone Mather described the inspirations for her giving: her Presbyterian belief in stewardship - serving (and saving) others - and the example of her father, Amasa Stone. But she expanded her role as dutiful daughter, moving beyond conventional philanthropy into political reform and institution-building. Flora Stone, born in 1852, was the third child of Amasa and Julia Gleason Stone. Her family - parents, brother Adelbert, and sister Clara - moved to Cleveland from Massachusetts in 1851. Her father, a self-taught engineer, built churches, then bridges and railroads, which made his fortune. He arrived in Cleveland as superintendent of the Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati Railroad, which he had built with two partners. He subsequently directed and built other railroad lines and invested in the city’s burgeoning industries and banks. Thanks to its railroads and lake shipping, petroleum refineries, and iron and steel mills, Cleveland would become an industrial giant. In 1858, Stone built an elaborate Italianate mansion on Euclid Avenue, a sign that he had arrived socially and financially. He became an ardent Republican and an enthusiastic supporter of the Union side of the Civil War. -

GOVERNOR STATE OF MICHIGAN In its varied forms of development and operation, no STATE OF MICHIGAN interest has lately excited more curiosity and wide- spread attention among business people and the general public than the industries of mining and MINES metallurgy. These industries during the past few years AND have prospered and grown at an unprecedented rate MINERAL STATISTICS and to an extent practically beyond ordinary comprehension and almost beyond belief. Every now and then, the discovery of new mineral bearing districts are announced by prospectors, which are developed and put in shape to send out an economic product at record speed. Financial stringency or not, there is always a plenty of money within reach to finance a mining proposition of merit. As a natural consequence, the mineral and metal producing capacity of the country is expanding in a wonderful manner and in practically all directions. The evolution of mining and metallurgy has kept pace with trade and commerce. Progress toward By James L. THE HEART OF AMASA STONE By John Vacha On the afternoon of May 11, 1883, the usual decorum of Cleveland's "Millionaires' Row" was barely disturbed by a single muffled gunshot. It came from the rococo mansion of industrialist Amasa Stone. Entering an upstairs bathroom, a servant discovered the master of the house lying partly dressed in the bathtub, a .32 revolver by his side and a bullet in his heart. There were some unforgiving souls who thought it should have been done half a dozen years earlier. One of his contemporaries was reputed to have predicted that while Stone may have been the richest man in the city, he would have its smallest funeral. He left an estate estimated at $6 million. His family, unwilling perhaps to risk fulfilling the second half of that prophecy, restricted his burial service at Lake View Cemetary to relatives only. Except for one tragic miscalculation, Stone by most measures left behind a lifetime of enviable achievement. He had built and run some of Ohio's principal railroads. His business ventures in railroads, banking, and manufacturing gained him one of the great fortunes in an age of great fortunes. Cleveland had gained its preeminent institution of higher learning largely at his behest, and his two daughters enjoyed well-connected marriages. As did so many early Clevelanders, Stone came to the Western Reserve from New England. He brought skills highly in demand for a growing city, having experience in engineering and construction. In fact, there was already a job waiting for him in the Forest City. -

Shipwrecks of Thunder Bay costs $6.95 and is available at the Dossin Museum. Wrecks & Rescues of the Great Lakes by James Barry has been reprinted in paperback for $17.95. Mr. Barry presents a photographic history of wrecks from the turn of the century to the Edmund Fitzgerald and Photinia. Speed Boat Kings by J. Lee Barrett details the history of powerboat racing on the Detroit River during the Gar Wood era. The famous 1931 Harmsworth Regatta, which pitted Gar Wood against Kaye Don from England is covered and historians still debate whether Gar Wood drew Kaye Don over the starting line and disqualified him. It was also known as “Millionaire’s Row” because in the late 1800s to the early 1900s, the street contained the homes of some of the richest and influential people in the city, county and country. Families living along “Millionaire’s Row” included those of Charles Brush Mansion Samuel Andrews Mansion industrialist and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller (during the 3725 Euclid Avenue 3033 Euclid Avenue period 1868 – 1884), banker and industrial distributor George Worthington, arc light inventor Charles F. Brush, mining magnate Samuel Mather, industrialist and politician Marcus Hanna, John Hay, personal secretary to Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State under William McKinley and Jeptha Wade, founder of Western Union Telegraph. Euclid Avenue’s most infamous resident was con artist Cassie Chadwick, the wife of Dr. Leroy Chadwick, who was unaware Mather Mansion that his wife was passing herself off to bankers as the illegitimate Tom L. -
