He would go on to stamp himself as the leading miler on the circuit, winning the G3 Burj Nahaar and G2 Godolphin Mile. He ventured to Hong Kong thereafter for the G1 Champions Mile, where he finished sixth, and was not seen again until last year=s carnival. After repeating in the Burj Nahaar off 10 months rest, the Godolphin team opted to take a shot at the 2000-meter World Cup rather than going for a title defense of the Godolphin Mile. African Story had never raced beyond a mile, but his connections were confident he would excel with the added distance. He finished fifth, beaten seven lengths by (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) in last year=s World Cup, but the boys in blue were not discouraged. African Story returned this year in the 2000-meter G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 Feb. 6, and ran his Sheikh Mohammed & his seventh World stablemate Prince Cup winner Horsephotos Bishop (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) to 1 1/4 lengths. He failed to run to his best next out in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 Mar. 8 after hitting his head in the starting gate, and checked in eighth. He had no such hindrances yesterday, however, charting a clear path on the way to his most important victory. A thrilled Silvestre de Sousa, who was recording his first World Cup victory, said: AIt turned into a perfect race for me as I only had one horse in front of me. I knew I had to get past him quick and it was a big relief when I went clear. African Story has good track form having won the Godolphin Mile two years ago. He travelled well and quickened great and I am over the moon. There is pressure, but at the same time I think I have shown that I have given my best and that there may still be more to come." Not everyone can go home happy in , and in the aftermath there were some disappointments, including the well-fancied Ruler of the World, who never factored and checked in 13th. Harry Herbert, Racing Advisor to the 4-year-old=s newest co-owner Al Shaqab Racing who bought into the colt, attributed the performance to a dislike of the surface. "He didn't handle the surface,@ Herbert told Racing Post. AHe traveled okay, but as soon as you asked him to quicken he was all at sea on it. It rode very dead. Tonight was not to be, but we will regroup and see what to go for on grass. I've no doubt there are some big days ahead." Hong Kong=s Military Attack (Ire), deployed the favorite in many markets, also failed to land a blow, checking in 10th. Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 and 3 winner Prince Bishop, typically a front-runner, was slow to leave the gate and last early, eventually ending up ninth.

Dubai Duty Free S. cont. He made his next appearance as a 14-1 shot in the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn), but belied those odds to best next-out G1 Japan Cup repeater Gentildonna (Jpn) by four lengths and accounted for a field that included defending race Eishin Flash (Jpn) (King=s Best) and subsequent G1 Hong Kong Cup runner-up Tokei Halo (Jpn) (Gold Halo {Jpn}). Having proved less effective at distances beyond 10 furlongs, Just a Way passed the Japan Cup, was put away for the balance of the season and had one prep under his belt for this, a convincing 3 1/2-length victory in the G2 Nakayama Kinen Mar. 2. Settled near the tail of the field with just Eclipse Award winner Dank and the slow-starting Trade Storm (GB) (Trade Fair {GB}) behind, Just a Way settled into a steady beat as Tokei Halo set the pace from Hong Kong=s Blazing Speed (GB) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) and Tasaday (Nayef) up close. Still last but a couple as they made the steady turn towards home, Just a Way followed the move DRC/Andrew Watkins of the previously unbeaten Vercingetorix while gobbling up the ground at the 400, raced to the front outside the South African a mere half-furlong later and scampered clear with a devastating turn of speed. Dank, making her first start since clinching a championship in the GI Breeders= Cup Filly and Mare Turf, rallied for third, while her fellow female The Fugue (GB) (Dansili {GB}) was in close attendance to the early pace, but faded away tamely into a disappointing 11th. AHe didn=t start well and he wanted to take the mid-field position but followed Soumillion=s horse but when I got to the straight, he quickened very well as I thought he would,@ winning rider Yuichi Fukunaga explained. The jockey went for plan B and gave him one of the best rides I=ve seen.@

Dubai Golden Shaheen cont. Perhaps flying under the radar beneath some of his better-known countrymates throughout the week, Sterling City is a horse that has been consistently performing and improving in Hong Kong throughout the past three seasons. He won his first outing at the local group level last June, taking the HKG3 Premier Cup before adding the HKG2 Premier BowlBleaving the likes of Rich Tapestry and Engels in his wakeBoff a four-month layoff Oct. 27. Second in the G2 Jockey Club Sprint Nov. 17, Sterling City checked in a highly respectable fifth in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint Dec. 8. Returning to the races Jan. 1, Sterling City found the winner=s circle in the HKG3 Chinese Club Challenge Cup. He most recently finished third in the HKG1 Chairman=s Sprint Prize Feb. 16. Moore, who trained Viva Pataca to finish second in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic of 2008, indicated that Sterling City has a globetrotting campaign ahead of him. "I thought Rich Tapestry was home because my horse hadn't traveled one bit through the race,@ the trainer admitted. ABut it's the rider, he is just a magician. He got the horse balanced and he closed off like we thought he would. His next international race will be in Singapore. And it is always a possibility he could come to England, I Royal Ascot."

AMBER IS THE COLOR OF HIS ENERGY Brazilian Joao Moreira is perhaps one of the world=s best riders no one has heard of or at least not enough of. At the age of 28, Moreira is a perennial leading jockey in Singapore, where he routinely racks up 200-win seasons and remarkably rode eight winners from as many mounts on a single Kranji card last Septemeber. Not exactly at Royal Ascot, but not too shabby. Moreira decided to broaden his horizons and accepted the challenge of riding regularly in Hong Kong Amber Sky (left) HKJC.com this season, a colony dominated over the years by Douglas Whyte and more recently Zac Purton. Despite missing the first month and a half of the season and despite running afoul of HKJC stewards on more than one occasion, Moreira presently sits just 10 wins behind Purton (off 130 fewer rides) and is well clear of Whyte in this year=s standings. Success breeds success, and he had recently become the first-call rider for the always- John Moore stable. In Saturday=s G1 Al Quoz Sprint, the so-called AMagic Man@ had the call aboard the speedy Amber Sky (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) for trainer Ricky Yiu, who had quietly compared Amber Sky to his former champion Sacred Kingdom (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}). In the span of a little more than 56 seconds Saturday evening, Moreira and Amber Sky announced their arrival onto the international scene with a pillar-to-post score.
