So, out of 12 horses filling the first four places, 6 were by Galileo himself, 2 by New Approach, and 2 GALILEO EXPLOSION more by other Sadler=s Wells-line sires: that=s ten out of Just two weeks ago, Galileo had not sired a Northern twelve. (RPR 120), respectively. Libertarian, by New Approach, There were three Classics last weekend: the was second in the Epsom Derby, with Galileo sons G1 Epsom Oaks on Friday; Galileo=s Rock and Battle of Marengo third and fourth. the G1 Epsom Derby on In Friday=s Oaks, Talent, by New Approach, was the Saturday; and the G1 Prix shock 20-1 winner, upsetting stablemate Secret du Jockey-Club French Gesture, by Galileo, with Moth, by Galileo, fourth. See Derby on Sunday. In those the accompanying table for the blow-by-blow. To say three races, 12 horses, of Galileo had a monster weekend would be seriously course, filled the first four understating it; moving from 45th on the General Sire places. Six of the 12 List into third just about sums it up. places were filled by Galileo is such a dominant Classic sire now that it is Ruler of the World 3-year-old colts and fillies tempting to compare his record thus far to that of his Racing Post by Galileo. Two more were sire, the incomparable, 14-time Champion Sire, Sadler=s filled by first-crop Wells. 3-year-olds by Galileo=s son, New Approach. Oppenheim cont. Given that Galileo=s 3-year-olds aren=t even halfway through their 3-year-old years, it=s entirely possible by the end of the year Galileo will have even more Group 1 winners. Comparing him now to Sadler=s Wells and Danehill puts Galileo at a seven-month disadvantage; a “The North American sector accounts for 80% of the 2-year-old market’s gross, fairer comparison will be at the end of the year, when the European sector 20%, therefore just by sheer weight of money trends in his eighth crop of 3-year-olds will have finished their North America will be more significant in the 2-year-old market. Coolmore=s Mastercraftsman, a son of Danehill Dancer who was a dual Group 1 winner at two and again at three, when he won the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and G1 St. James=s Palace S., became the first 2013 Freshman sire of a black-type winner when the colt Pablosky, now 3-for-3, won a listed race in Italy on Sunday. That moved Mastercraftsman up to third on the fledgling 2013 Freshman Sire table (click here-- 2013 YTD First-Crop sires--All), behind two other European sires, Ireland=s Ballyhane Stud=s Dandy Man (Mozart)--who had his ninth winner Monday night--and the Italian-based GI Breeders= Cup Turf winner, Red Rocks (Galileo). Ireland=s Ballylinch Stud=s Intense Focus (Giant=s Causeway), in fifth, makes it four of the top five, at the moment, anyway, in Europe, the only exception being California-based Time to Get Even (Stephen Got Even), but that=s just on the basis of two winners. American 2-year-old racing hasn=t got going to any great extent yet, which is also reflected in the 2013 Two-Year-Old Sire List (click here--2013 YTD 2-Year-Old Sires--All), in which the top six are all European sires. Leading the way at the moment is Coolmore=s Footstepsinthesand (Giant=s Causeway), who had a black-type winner in Ireland Monday night. Darley=s Kheleyf (Green Desert) and Ireland=s Tally-Ho Stud=s three-quarter brother to Invincible Spirit, Kodiac (Danehill), are tied with freshman sire Dandy Man with nine 2013 two-year-old winners each, so far. All three of those are Danzig-line sires. Bill Oppenheim may be contacted at [email protected] (please cc TDN management at [email protected]). Wild Dayrell, Winner of the Epsom Derby, 1855 SOLD REF:- 137424 Artist: SAMUEL HENRY ALKEN Height: 77.47 cm (30 1/2") Width: 129.032 cm (50 3/4") 1 https://johnbennettfinepaintings.com/wild-dayrell-winner-of-the-epsom-derby-1855-1 02/10/2021 Short Description Wild Dayrell, Winner of the Epsom Derby, 1855 Henry Alken Jnr.’s Christian name was Samuel Henry Alken, but he is probably better known as the former. He was born on August 22nd, 1810, as the first son of Henry Alken, a major sporting painter of the 18th century and a member of this renowned dynasty of seven sporting artists. The Alkens were originally of Danish descent with Sefferein Snr coming to England in the late 1730’s and working as a stone and wood carver. Henry Alken Jnr was his great-grandson. He was batised at St Clement’s Church as Samuel Henry but his family always called him Henry Gordon but little is known of Alken’s personal life other than that he married Martha Dormer and is recorded as receiving parochial relief in 1891. When he died in 1894, he was residing in Polar Workhouse in southeast London. Alken’s work, in both oil and watercolour, is strikingly similar to that of his father. It is unclear whether the son was imitating his father, or whether he had simply been taught by him. Alken Jnr. is characterised as having a less developed sense of draughtsmanship but as paying closer attention to detail than his father. His horses are also less angular and more rounded than his father’s animals.

The connections of both Coolmore’s Gleneagles and Anthony Oppenheimer’s Golden Horn, the pair of 3-year-old standouts are expected to meet in the 1 ¼-mile race after the latter withdrew from a potential clash in the “Win and You’re In” Juddmonte International (GI) at York August 19 due to the soft turf.

  • Managers Mark Your Cards
MANAGERS MARK YOUR CARDS Each year we ask the Johnston Racing Yard Managers to pick three horses from their own ‘yards’ that we should look out for in the season ahead. Even in normal times it’s a speculative task. And these are far from normal times. However, our Yard Managers are an optimistic bunch and have sent us their picks of the horses to look out for when racing eventually resumes. Andrew Bottomley Andrew Bottomley, who manages the two- year-olds in the Warwick House yard, got the ball rolling by selecting three colts, starting with Saeed Suhail’s colt, Red Mirage: He is a big strong colt by the prolific sprinter Showcasing. He looks a real early type on looks and breeding. He was foaled in early February and has been quick to show ability and speed in his first gallops. His dam, the Listed-placed Duchess Dora, was twice a winner over five furlongs around Chester and was also Clockwise from top left: Bavardages (Nicole Costello); Rose Of Kildare (Rachel Fox-Barnett); Listed placed at that distance. I would Zabeel Champion with Andy Larnach up think he’ll be one of our first two-year- Marie’s Diamond (Mairead Heap); Novelty (Meg Warburton) old runners this year, but he also has the scope to improve as the season Although his dam, Chaquiras, was a juvenile colt, beginning with Zabeel of character, has a beautiful stride and is filly can follow in her footsteps. • FRANKEL – a Freak of Nature Or Man-Made Success Story?
FRANKEL – a freak of nature or man-made success story? Why was Frankel such a successful racehorse? A truly unique specimen or an extremely talented individual produced, trained and campaigned perfectly (to hide all imperfection)? And will he enjoy the same amount of success as a breeding stallion? Looking into his pedigree, there is no doubt that he is produced from the crem de la crem of thoroughbred bloodlines. By the great sire, Galileo; who himself was a brilliant racehorse as a winner of the Epsom Derby in 2001. Out of Kind by Danehill. Kind was also successful on a number of occasions over six furlongs. Frankel is line bred in the 3rd and 4th generation to Northern Dancer, a persistent winner in the USA, including of the Kentucky Derby. However, good bloodlines do not necessarily mean a good horse. There are many more ingredients needed to make a horse successful. Namely soundness, attitude, and experienced training, plus lady luck being on your side! Looking at pictures of Northern Dancer, Frankel is of a similar stamp and possesses a number of his traits. In the thoroughbred breeding world, horses are line bred (a form of controlled in-breeding) in order to enhance the wanted traits of a particular bloodline, such as speed or stamina. By adding more of the same blood, you are more likely to achieve a similar animal, so the theory goes. However, you may not achieve the wanted traits, and in fact get unwanted traits such as wind unsoundness or conformational defects. As far as we know, Frankel does not have any unsoundness issues.
