    Marten Julian’s Epsom Derby & Oaks ONLINE PREVIEW Friday 5 June The Investec Oaks (1m 4f) (4.30) Writing this on Thursday I am assuming the ground will be riding good for the start of the meeting. The going was on the soft side earlier in the week, but temperatures are set to rise and conditions could be quick by Friday unless the forecast thunderstorms hit the course. If they do, then they could bring up to 5mm of rain, which would ease the ground to good to soft, if not softer. There is nothing more frustrating in an analysis of form than a late change in ground conditions, so this uncertainty has to be factored into my preview. Visually the most impressive performance I have seen has come from Crystal Zvezda when she won a Listed trial stakes at Newbury in May. Rated just 78 at the time, on the strength of her maiden win at Lingfield in October, she beat the 98-rated Montalcino going away by three and a half lengths, with 90-rated Pamona half a length back in third. On figures she ran to a mark of around 103, 4lb lower than her new mark of 107. Crystal Zvezda won the race in the manner of a very talented filly. Last in the early stages and still with a wall of horses in front of her a quarter of a mile from home, she was switched approaching the final furlong and in just a couple of strides went clear of her rivals to win with loads in hand.

Signed: _________________________________ Date: _____________________ 2 Abstract Al-Sirr al-Maktūm is one of the most compelling theoretical and practical accounts of astral magic written in the post-classical period of Islamic thought. Of central concern to its reader is to understand why the great philosopher- theologian, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (d.606/1210) should have written it. The occult practices described therein are attributed to the Sabians, a historical group who lived in Ḥarrān in Upper Mesopotamia. Representing the last vestiges of Ancient Mesopotamian paganism during the early Islamic period, their religion involved the veneration of the seven planets, which they believed were ensouled celestial beings and the proximate causes of all sublunary change. By means of such astrolatry they were able, remotely, to change reality in ways which defied the customary pattern of causation in this world. The main focus of al-Rāzī‘s treatment of their practice is a long ritual during which the aspirant successively brings under his will each of the seven planets. On completion of the ritual, the aspirant would have transcended the limitations of his human existence and his soul would have attained complete perfection. This thesis will argue that for al-Rāzī, the Sabians constituted a heresiological category, representative of a soteriological system which dispensed with the need for the Islamic institution of prophethood.

He became an apprentice to his father, and moved up to become one of his most called-upon riders. The O’Briens became the first father-son/trainer-jockey combo to win the Epsom Derby when Camelot won the classic race in 2012. Brother Donnacha and sister Sarah have also ridden in races. • Rode his first winner less than a week after turning 16. The win came aboard Johann Zoffany, trained by his father at Leopardstown in Ireland on May 28, 2009. He essentially rode part-time while still attending school, and finished in a three-way tie for Ireland’s champion apprentice title in 2010. He won the honor by a wide margin in 2011. • His first classic winner in the saddle also came in 2001, when he took the Irish 2,000 Guineas aboard Roderic O’Connor at age 17. • Later that year, O’Brien made his first Breeders’ Cup mount a winning one, taking the Breeders’ Cup Turf aboard St Nicholas Abbey. O’Brien became the youngest jockey to win a Breeders’ Cup race at 18 years old. • St Nicholas Abbey, a son of Montjeu, was arguably O’Brien’s most significant mount, also taking the Dubai Sheema Classic (G1) in the U.A.E.
