Zolani Mahola Zolani, well-known and respected for bringing South Africa and its people together across social, racial and cultural divides through her work as a musician. Quoted to say, “our individual stories are unique and there is value in examining one's personal history, and to being curious about those around us ... that we help each other move toward our fullest expression as human beings”. Zolani is passionate to share her own personal experience of growing up in a divided South Africa, speaking intimately about the coping mechanisms she developed as a child and what impact they had on her both positively and negatively grow from a township girl to an international superstar. Freshlyground was formed in 2002 and has become a household name as one of South Africa’s most acclaimed and successful bands. Capturing the heart of South Africa and claimed global recognition. One of Zolani’s highlights, a collaboration with pop superstar Shakira with whom Freshlyground recorded the official song for the FIFA World Cup 2010, performing at the closing ceremony to a global audience of over a billion people. After an unbelievable 17 years with the band, we know as ‘The One Who Sings’ to spread her wings and fully commit to her new venture as a solo artist and inspirational speaker. Freshlyground Biography
FRESHLYGROUND Freshlyground formed in early 2002, and is made up of seven talented and diverse musicians from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Fronted by the diminutive but dynamic Zolani Mahola, the band exudes a live performance energy that has been the bedrock of their success. The experienced rhythm section of Peter Cohen (drums) & Josh Hawks (bass) is complimented by guitarist Julio Sigauque, keyboardist Seredeal Scheepers, Simon Attwell (flute, mbira, sax and harmonica) and violinist Kyla Rose Smith. Although hailing from diverse backgrounds, between them the band’s members weave a musical magic that is highly infectious and undeniably groovy. In 2003 Freshlyground launched their debut album, Jika Jika under their own Freeground Records label, the immediate success of which firmly cemented the band as one of South Africa’s most successful young acts. Freshlyground released their second studio album Nomvula in July 2004. Nomvula was recorded and produced by JB Arthur and Sibusiso Victor Masondo. The album sparked interest from Sony BMG Africa, who signed the band and released Nomvula in September that year. Radio quickly picked up on the single ‘Doo Be Doo’ and the catchy song went on to become a crossover favorite amongst a diverse spread of stations and their listeners. ‘Doo Be Doo’ was the most played song in South Africa in 2005. The major success of ‘Doo Be Doo’ was followed by the singles ‘I’d Like’, ‘Zithande’, ‘Things Have Changed’ and the title track of the album ‘Nomvula’. The album sold 300 000 units in South Africa alone- earning it multi-platinum status. The success and broad appeal of the band was celebrated in November 2006 when Freshlyground won the MTV Europe Award in the category Best African Act.

Mark Cheyne - Composer / Producer / Musical Director For over 20 years Mark Cheyne has enjoyed a diverse career as a music composer, producer, arranger and director. He has composed and produced numerous soundtracks for TV and radio commercials as well as corporate events for clients including ABSA, Coca-Cola, Emperors Palace, First National Bank, Goldcrest, Mercedes-Benz, Plascon & Sasol. He received a Loerie Craft Award for his work on the launch of the BMW 7 Series in 2002. Mark has performed as musical director for numerous stage shows, concerts and corporate events for many of South Africa’s leading companies including Altron, Discovery, EOH, Italtile, Massmart, MTN, Momentum, Nedbank, Netcare, Samsung, SAP, Standard Bank and Vodacom. He is one of South Africa’s most prolific music arrangers having scored hundreds of pieces for orchestra. Mark is the Musical Director of the Electric Pops Orchestra, which he formed in 1998. This versatile group fuses modern pop music genres with the sound of a symphony orchestra, and has performed with many of South Africa’s biggest stars including Arno Carstens, Elvis Blue, Johnny Clegg, Just Jinjer, Karen Zoid, Lira, Loyiso Bala, Mi Casa, Monark, Pretty Yende, Prime Circle, Sibongile Khumalo, Sipho Hotstix Mabuse and the Soweto Gospel Choir. Day Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Dr. Christina Sunardi Music This dissertation examines ways in which representations of contemporary Africa are created, perpetuated, subverted, and reinforced through African popular music in Paris, France, Montreal, Canada, and the 2010 World Cup Games in South Africa. As a response to the notion established by scholars such as Achille Mbembe (2001) and Kofi Agawu (2003) who assert that postcolonial discourse on Africa creates a binary that reinforces the otherness of Africa, I suggest that the notion of Afropolitanism provides an alternative approach to understanding representations of contemporary Africa in a way that recognizes the multiplicities of transnational identities and cultural products without writing out the importance of the African continent. I view the artists whose music I analyze as contributors, whether intentionally or not, to a sense of Afropolitanism that straddles multiple levels of representation in a single event. I ultimately argue that representation of contemporary Africa is complex and that Afropolitanism as a framework recognizes the complexities of these representations.
