The committee sent letters to a number of universities with solid Meteorology and Oceanography degree programs. We were attempting to increase the number of students with declared majors and increase the probability of supporting students with a high likelihood for completing a degree. An unprecedented 28 Students applied. The committee recommended awards for 10 students. The Executive board voted in Dallas to approve this recommendation and authorized a disbursement of $20K from the scholarship fund we have processed these awards and received many thank you notes from the awardees. A Call to Action! As we look forward to this year’s selection process we note that it has been some time since the Association has reached out to the membership for donations for the scholarship fund. We have all been living off the resources of large past endowments with only a small number of donations being received annually. In short the majority of the active Membership, (over 500 strong) has not been thinking of this program when making charitable donations. We see this program as the single greatest reason that our Association exists. It makes us relevant and helps to ensure that our interests in advancing the sciences are achieved. I am confident that most will agree. To ensure that our program is sustainable into the future we must support this fund with some increases in annual donations. It is important to note that today the fund is healthy with an approximate balance of $140K. Despite this balance, the cost of college tuition continues to rise (greater than 35K/year) and if we are to be able to have awards that are meaningful in offsetting these costs we must do better in supporting the fund. At the reunion in Dallas, robust discussions took place regarding the use of the funds principal. Some feel it should never be used and only earned interest should be used to determine annual awards. Under this concept it is likely that our awards would dwindle to levels that would not be meaningful. That won’t occur overnight but without significant increase in annual donations it will happen. The AMS is experiencing this in some of their named scholarships with similar restrictions. There is no NWSA documentation to suggest any use of principal restriction from past endowments. Others including the Scholarship committee feel we should be able to use some of the principal to support a limited number of significant scholarships. Past and present members have donated monies for this purpose and we should do all we can to respect that and have a meaningful program. The committee understands that without increased donations the fund will be placed in jeopardy. It is important to note that the fund can be sustained for more than 10 years with zero contributions but it would cease to function somewhere in the 12 th to 15 th year. If the current membership chooses to allow the fund to dwindle to unsustainable levels then that too must be respected and ultimately the scholarship program may sunset. We do not think that will be our outcome! Please look for the Scholarship fund donation form and envelop in your Aerograph and on the website. We hope you will choose to donate this year and each year going forward. However, he put the screws through the heel bone so Fleet Weather Center, San Diego, located at Naval Air she couldn’t put much weight on the foot because of the Station North Island (NASNI), will bring together three screws. Today, October 12, the surgeon removed the separate commands under one roof; Strike Group screws and hopefully Carol will be good to go in a couple Oceanography Team, San Diego, Naval Maritime of days.
