His involvement in the community-based LionBackers program, which was created to assist David Braley in re-estab- lishing BC Lions Football in British Columbia, resulted in Glen being named President of the Club in 1997. When Glen took the job on January 1, 1997 he was no stranger to sports marketing and no 4 stranger to the Lions organization. From 1979 to 1985 Glen worked extensively with the football team as a consultant to the marketing department. In 1986 Glen moved to the Vancouver Canucks, becoming Vice President and Director of Marketing, a post he held until 1995. ADAM RITA Head Coach and Director of Football Operations 1998 will mark Adam Rita’s second year as Head Coach and Director of Football Operations for the BC Lions. Adam is entering his 15th season as a coach in the CFL. Rita has coached in six Grey Cups and has four Grey Cup rings to his name - in fact, he has never missed the play-offs as a Head Coach in the CFL. Adam started his pro-coaching duties with the Lions in 1983 as the offensive coordinator under Don Matthews. In 1989 Adam stepped out of the pro’s and went to the UBC Thunderbirds where Frank Smith named Rita the defensive coordinator. Adam was then named the offensive coordina- tor under Don Matthews in Toronto in 1990. Rita took over from Matthews in '92, and led the Argos to a 13-5 record and a Grey Cup victory over the Calgary Stampeders. Rita also took league honours as the Canadian Football Coach of the Year. After a year in Edmonton, and Ottawa, Adam went south to join the Memphis Mad-Dogs in their inaugural season as the club’s assistant head coach to Pepper Rogers. Once again in 1996 Rita was back with Don Matthews as the offen- 5 sive coordinator. Under Rita’s guidance, the Argos led the CFL in total offence as well as the league’s number one passing game en route to a club record 15-3 regular season and triumph in the 1996 Grey Cup over Edmonton. Prior to coming to Canada, Rita was an assistant coach with Boise State University (1969-75), assistant coach / recruiting coordinator for UNLV (1976-78) and assis- tant coach with the University of Hawaii (1979-82). Adam Rita was born September 21, 1947 in Honolulu and grew up on the Island of Kauai. A graduate of Boise State University,Adam is married with wife, Jocelyne, in Toronto and son, Kevin, in Victoria. • Russ Jackson on CFL.Ca Comments That “Good Quarterbacks Like Russ Jackson Are a Special Kind
Devon Forbes Mathew Neal PED 201 Prof. Byl March 30 th , 2009 A Biography of Russell Stanley Jackson Displaying one of the finest athletes representing Canada is Russell “Russ” Stanley Jackson. On the day of July 28 th , 1936 in Hamilton, Ontario comes a child who is to be recognized as one of the greatest contributors to genuine passion for the love of athletics and sportsmanship both on and off the playing field. Jackson’s early life truly defined what his passion was: sports. Jackson excelled as an athlete in his careers in basketball, hockey, and baseball. Many spectators that watched Jackson on the playing field often came to the conclusion that as his skill level rose, so did the fortunes of his fellow players. Jackson was truly a beneficial addition to any team he took part in. Russ played several sports and loved the competition involved in it. Baseball was a large part of his life from early childhood to adolescence. Jackson was involved in some semi‐pro baseball in Hamilton for a period of time; however, he grew out of it. Jackson began to develop a passion for football, yet his father felt that there was no insurance after the football season ended. Instead, he felt academics were a priority. Despite Jackson’s father’s disagreement with playing football during school, Russ got his neighbour to sign the permission to play (Canadian Heroes with Canada Heroes). Jackson had the intent of playing defensive back and dominated playing in the senior level while he, himself, was still a junior.

  • Key Historical Moments
KEY HISTORICAL MOMENTS GETTING INTO THE WIFU: 1951 TO 1954 1951 A group led by Ken Stauffer and Tiny Radar, inspired by columnist Andy Lytle, sends representatives to the off-season Western Interprovincial Football Union meetings to initiate Vancouver’s bid for a team. 1952 WIFU rejects Vancouver’s application when Winnipeg and Regina vote against the idea of a fifth team. 1953 The first annual meeting of the club, held on January 22, 1953 saw Arthur E. Mercer named as the first President. With the help of future Hall of Fame builder Vic Spencer, Vancouver was granted a conditional franchise on the requirements of a 15,000 seat stadium, selling 6,500 season tickets and providing guaranteed travel expenses of the visiting teams. The Lions hire their first head coach Annis Stukus who begins to scout for players without the aid of an expansion draft. 1953 Water boy and future club GM, President and Hall of Famer Bob Ackles is hired. 1954 Empire Stadium opens in time for the 1954 British Empire Games and the Lions’ inaugural season in the WIFU. The Lions first-ever game is a 22-0 pre-season loss to Montreal before 19,371 spectators. 1954 The Lions open at home on August 28, 1954 against Winnipeg and their first ever TD comes a minute before half-time as By Bailey crashes over from a yard out to give BC a 5-1 lead. The Bombers fought back however with a TD to level the score. Two 4th quarter singles eventually gave Winnipeg the victory by an 8-6 count.

  • The Montreal Hornets
Montreal Hornets By Wes Cross One of the more ephemeral entries in the pre‐history of the CFL, the Hornets lasted for only one season. Struggling to revive the suspended operations of the pre‐war Big Four, officially the Inter Provincial Rugby Union (IRFU) ,the Hornets were suddenly created in September to join the already running Hamilton Tigers, Toronto Argonauts and Ottawa Rough Riders. The team was led by president John McFetrick (recently of HMCS Donnacona),general manager George Downs and two “co‐coaches”: Glen Brown and Bill Hughes. Hughes had coached at both Ottawa and Hamilton prior to joining the Hornets and was a McGill Redmen alumnus. US‐trained Brown coached the 1944 HMCS Donnacona Navy team to the Grey Cup in 1944 also served as head coach of the High School of Montreal. The team surveyed the landscape and hurriedly invited Montreal based players to tryouts. Time and financial limits meant that a number of invitees were local high school products, notably perennial powerhouse West Hill High School of the NDG district. Training began September 1st with the first scrimmages involving a group of 45. Coach Brown estimated that 90% of the hopefuls had been Montreal high school gridders. By September 13th 35 players had been signed to play, although roster limits would reduce the number to 24 by the season opener. A September 19th 1945 directive from the Canadian government suddenly freed up servicemen who were restricted to playing for military teams (and hence the awarding of the Grey Cup to service teams from 1942 through 1944).
