CMA 3 BC LIONS EXECUTIVES AND COACHES DAVID BRALEY Owner David Braley, a Hamilton, Ontario manufacturer, purchased the BC Lions in January 1997 when the former owner was unable to find another local buyer. David was born in Montreal, Quebec and moved to Hamilton with his family when he was three years old. He attended Westdale High School in Hamilton before enrolling in science studies at McMaster University. While at McMaster, he played on both the football and basketball teams. Braley began his business career after university with the General Motors Acceptance Corporation in Hamilton before advancing to London Life Insurance. He purchased Wm. Orlick Ltd., an auto parts manufacturing firm, in 1969, and subsequently formed Orlick Industries in 1971. As President of Orlick Industries, Braley monitors and directs a finishing division, a tool and die division, and die casting division. Last fall Braley was inducted into the Hamilton Gallery of Distinction for his significant contribution towards the betterment of Hamilton, and was recently named as one of General Motors’ Preferred Suppliers - a highly prestigious achievement. David was recently appointed Vice Chairmen of the Executive, CFL Board of Governors, and sits as a member of the CFL Executive Committee. He was also instrumental in the formation of the Hamilton Industrial training Advisory Committee, and is the past Chairman of the Super Board for the Hamilton Convention Centre, Hamilton Place, and Copps Coliseum. David has three sons, Ron, Rob and Rich. He and his wife Nancy reside in Burlington, Ontario. GLEN RINGDAL President This will be Glen’s second full season as President of the BC Lions Football Club. His involvement in the community-based LionBackers program, which was created to assist David Braley in re-estab- lishing BC Lions Football in British Columbia, resulted in Glen being named President of the Club in 1997. When Glen took the job on January 1, 1997 he was no stranger to sports marketing and no 4 stranger to the Lions organization. From 1979 to 1985 Glen worked extensively with the football team as a consultant to the marketing department. In 1986 Glen moved to the Vancouver Canucks, becoming Vice President and Director of Marketing, a post he held until 1995. Glen’s previous experience was focused on public relations, consulting, and newspaper editorial work. Glen is a native of Ladner and now resides in Vancouver. FRANK BABICH Vice President / Director of Sales This will be Frank’s first season with Lions. He joined the organization in November 1997 and took on the joint roles of Vice President & Director of Sales, bringing with him thirty years of Marketing and Sales expertise. Most recently, Frank was Vice President of Sales and Marketing for BCTV / CHEK TV. He was responsible for all the national and regional revenues for the two television sta- tions. With the Lions Frank is responsible for all non-League-generated revenue acquired by the Club, including corporate sales, ticket sales, merchandising and hospitality suites. Frank has two chil- dren, daughter Christina and son J.P. ADAM RITA Head Coach and Director of Football Operations 1998 will mark Adam Rita’s second year as Head Coach and Director of Football Operations for the BC Lions. Adam is entering his 15th season as a coach in the CFL. Rita has coached in six Grey Cups and has four Grey Cup rings to his name - in fact, he has never missed the play-offs as a Head Coach in the CFL. Adam started his pro-coaching duties with the Lions in 1983 as the offensive coordinator under Don Matthews. In 1989 Adam stepped out of the pro’s and went to the UBC Thunderbirds where Frank Smith named Rita the defensive coordinator. Adam was then named the offensive coordina- tor under Don Matthews in Toronto in 1990. Rita took over from Matthews in '92, and led the Argos to a 13-5 record and a Grey Cup victory over the Calgary Stampeders. Rita also took league honours as the Canadian Football Coach of the Year. After a year in Edmonton, and Ottawa, Adam went south to join the Memphis Mad-Dogs in their inaugural season as the club’s assistant head coach to Pepper Rogers. Once again in 1996 Rita was back with Don Matthews as the offen- 5 sive coordinator. Under Rita’s guidance, the Argos led the CFL in total offence as well as the league’s number one passing game en route to a club record 15-3 regular season and triumph in the 1996 Grey Cup over Edmonton. Prior to coming to Canada, Rita was an assistant coach with Boise State University (1969-75), assistant coach / recruiting coordinator for UNLV (1976-78) and assis- tant coach with the University of Hawaii (1979-82). Adam Rita was born September 21, 1947 in Honolulu and grew up on the Island of Kauai. A graduate of Boise State University,Adam is married with wife, Jocelyne, in Toronto and son, Kevin, in Victoria. KANI KAUAHI Offensive Line Coach Head Coach Adam Rita announced the hiring of Kani Kauahi (Con-ee Ka-WAA-he) as offensive line coach on April 29th, 1998. Kauahi recently coached as the offensive line assistant in Mesa,Arizona. He was also the strength and conditioning coach with the Arizona Cardinals. Kani has 11 years’ experience as a player in the NFL and brings to the offensive line position a wealth of knowledge and skill.
