Senecan tragic characters and choruses often echo the language of Virgil’s epic in provocative ways; these constitute a contrastive reworking of the original Virgilian contents and context, one that has not to date been fully considered by scholars. -

Murdoch University Perth, Western Australia 2004 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research. ------------------------------------- Robert Daniel Victorin-Vangerud i Abstract “Facing Nature: The Infinite in the Flesh” by Robert Victorin-Vangerud This thesis explores the relation between two interpretations of chôra, drawn from a reading of Plato’s Timaeus. The first I label the elemental chôra. The second, I call the social chôra. The first chapter addresses the elements in Ionian philosophy, with an eye toward the political and social backdrop of the important cosmological notion of isonomia, law of equals. Here social and elemental are continuous. Chapter two looks at the next phase of Presocratic thought, Elea, specifically Parmenides and his influence on later thought, then turns to Heidegger’s reading of Parmenides’ through the key word of alêtheia. Finally, I offer a reading of Parmenides through a different key word— trust. The third chapter examines Plato’s cosmology in the Timaeus, focusing on the way the beginning of this dialogue inflects the dialogue in a political/social direction, putting the social chôra in tension with the elemental chôra that the body of the Timaeus’ discusses. In the fourth chapter, which examines the Phaedrus, this tension is inverted, since this dialogue on writing and justice set in what proves to be the mesmerizing and erotic elemental milieu of the world outside the walls of the polis. The second half of the dissertation turns to some modern thinkers within the phenomenological tradition or its wake who write about elementals. -

I argue that the complex status of tyche in Aristotle's texts, when combined with its appearance in the Platonic dialogues and the framework of Greek myth and poetry (poiesis), underscores the seriousness with which the Greeks consider the role of chance in human life. -
Rethinking the Connection of Metaphor and Commonplace
RETHINKING THE CONNECTION OF METAPHOR AND TOPOS MAREIKE BUSS & JÖRG JOST RWTH AACHEN 1. Introduction Having survived the «death of rhetoric» (R. BARTHES 1985: 115), metaphor has become the centre of intensive research by philosophers of language and linguists in the twentieth cen- tury. Nowadays it is widely accepted that metaphor is not reducible to «a sort of happy extra trick with words» (I. A. RICHARDS [1936] 1964: 90), but is rather said to be a funda- mental principle of linguistic creativity with an invaluable cognitive function and heuristic potential. Topos or rather commonplace has, in contrast, a predominantly negative connota- tion in everyday and scientific language. Topos, which originally designated the place where to find the arguments for a speech, has become the cliché, the worn out phrase, or the stereotype. Nevertheless, there are numerous critical studies focusing on topoi in their heu- ristic and argumentative function. Aristotle’s Art of Rhetoric is one of the first and most important ‘textbooks’ for speech production. Following Aristotle, the purpose of rhetorical speech consists in persuading by argumentation. In this respect he defines rhetoric as «the faculty of discovering the possible means of persuasion in reference to any subject whatever.» (Rhetoric I, 1355b/14,2). Now, persuasion presupposes – as any perlocutionary act – that the utterances have been under- stood by the audience, in short: it presupposes (text) comprehension.1 When analysing the first three phases of rhetoric – heuresis, taxis and lexis – two features in particular stand out on account of the role they play in argumentation: topos and metaphor, which are treated in the heuresis and the lexis.2 Metaphor works in a heuristic and aesthetic manner, while topos operates in a heu- ristic and logical manner. -

RESPONSE VIRTUE AND RIGHTS IN AMERICAN PROPERTY LAW Eric R. Claey4 INTRODUCTION: ON VIRTUE AND FRYING PANS In Plato's Republic, Socrates persuades his conversationalists to help him construct a city organized around commerce. Glaucon, who has an idealist streak, dismisses this city as a "city of pigs."1 In re- sponse, Socrates sketches for Glaucon an ideal city ruled by the most virtuous citizens-the philosophers. 2 To make the city as just and har- monious as possible, the philosophers abolish the institution of pri- vate property. They require the auxiliary citizens to use external 3 assets only in cooperation, to contribute to common civic projects. This conversational thread presents a tension that is simply un- solvable in practical politics in any permanent way. Politics focuses to an important extent on low and uncontroversial ends, most of which are associated with comfortable self-preservation. -

On Theodorus' Lesson in the Theaetetus 147D-E by S
On Theodorus’ lesson in the Theaetetus 147d-e by S. Negrepontis and G. Tassopoulos In the celebrated Theaetetus 147d3-e1 passage Theodorus is giving a lesson to Theaetetus and his companion, proving certain quadratic incommensurabilities. The dominant view on this passage, expressed independently by H. Cherniss and M. Burnyeat, is that Plato has no interest to, and does not, inform the reader about Theodorus’ method of incommensurability proofs employed in his lesson, and that, therefore, there is no way to decide from the Platonic text, our sole information on the lesson, whether the method is anthyphairetic as Zeuthen, Becker, van der Waerden suggest, or not anthyphairetic as Hardy-Wright, Knorr maintain. Knorr even claims that it would be impossible for Theodorus to possess a rigorous proof of Proposition X.2 of the Elements, necessary for an anthyphairetic method, because of the reliance of the proof of this Proposition, in the Elements, on Eudoxus principle. But it is not difficult to see that Knorr’s claim is undermined by the fact that an elementary proof of Proposition X.2, in no way involving Eudoxus principle, is readily obtained either from the proof of Proposition X.3 of the Elements itself (which is contrapositive and thus logically equivalent to X.2), or from an ancient argument going back to the originator of the theory of proportion reported by Aristotle in the Topics 158a-159b passage. The main part of the paper is devoted to a discussion of the evidence for a distributive rendering of the plural ‘hai dunameis’ in the crucial statement, ’because the powers (‘hai dunameis’) were shown to be infinite in multitude’ in 147d7-8 (contrary to the Burnyeat collective, set-theoretic rendering), necessarily resulting in an anthyphairetic method for Theodorus’ proofs of incommensurability (contrary to the Cherniss-Burnyeat neutrality thesis). -

Wilderness House Literary Review 6/4 Dennis Daly SOPHOCLES’ AJAX ©2012 Dennis Daly Introduction Sophocles lived during the golden age of ancient Greece. He was born around 496 BC in Colonus, just outside of Athens, and died 90 years later. He probably came from a wealthy merchant family and lived what many would think of as a near perfect life. So the dry facts seem to say. At sixteen years of age Sophocles led the paean, celebrating a decisive Greek victory over the Persians at Salamis. This was more than just an everyday honor. You needed the physique, athleticism, a stage presence and the ability to sing. Sophocles held numerous civic positions of high honor including treasurer, gen- eral (he served with the legendary Pericles), priest, and commissioner. His friends included the great historian Herodotus. Of all of Sophocles’ 123 plays only seven survive. They are Oedipus Rex, Antigone, Oedipus at Colonus, Electra, Women of Trachis, Philoctetes, and Ajax. Sophocles wrote his plays specifically as entries for the Dionysia festivals held annually in Athens. Playwrights usually entered four plays at a time into these competitions. The so-called Theban plays of Sophocles, Oedipus Rex, Antigone, and Oedipus at Colonus, were never entered together, but were each entered with another set of plays. Early on Sophocles bested his older rival Aeschylus and never looked back winning many more competitions than either Aeschylus or his young- er rival, Euripides. The power of these tragedies and their subject matter belie the official biogra- phy of Sophocles. The dramatist simply understood shame, degradation, alien- ation, despair and madness a little too well. -
