There are more than 200 established stores and businesses in Kapuskasing, including national chains such as Walmart, Canadian Tire, Tim Hortons, Shoppers, A&W, McDonald’s, Super 8, Comfort Inn, Travelodge, Subway, Casey’s and many more.

Circle Street is designed in a circular pattern where numerous specialty shops, restaurants, banking facilities and many other service industries are located around a picturesque cobblestone seating area. Several other restaurants, boutiques and services are situated in the East End business sector, just a few minutes’ walk from the scenic Riverside Park.

Ash Place, located across from the Model City Mall, is the home of many professional services such as a legal clinic, an optometrist office, an accounting firm and a business development centre.

For the avid golfer, the Kapuskasing Golf Club offers a course extending over 120 acres of lush, landscaped fairways, and is the most challenging nine-hole golf course in Northern Ontario. Open May to October.

ARTS & CULTURE Kapuskasing boasts many architectural, historical and cultural features.

The Ron Morel Memorial Museum, housed in two passenger cars and a steam locomotive, hosts a number of different exhibits pertaining to Kapuskasing and its rich and storied history. Permanently on display is the museum’s collection of trains and memorabilia. The museum also highlights the creativity of the late Maurice Gaudreault, a local sculptor. You can even pick up a Historic Walking Tour booklet and map to help you discover Kapuskasing’s significant points of interest!

The Centre regional de Loisirs culturels is a major contributor to all facets of Kapuskasing’s Francophone culture. The Centre de Loisirs has monthly art exhibits and hosts many theatrical and musical productions.

La Forge and the Kapuskasing Friendship Centre are some of the other organizations that contribute greatly to the community’s cultural uniqueness.

Le musée Ron-Morel, installé dans un train, présente différentes expositions sur l’histoire de Kapuskasing. La collection permanente comporte un modèle réduit de train, des articles souvenirs et met en vedette le talent et la créativité du défunt sculpteur Maurice Gaudreault. Le musée est un point de distribution d’une brochure historique et d’une carte pour visiter Kapuskasing et ses principaux attraits à votre propre rythme.

Avec ses spectacles et ses pièces de théâtre, le Centre régional de loisirs culturels est la pierre angulaire de la culture francophone de Kapuskasing. Chaque mois, sa galerie d’art présente une nouvelle exposition.

La Forge et le Centre d’amitié autochtone de Kapuskasing (le Indian Friendship Centre) contribuent aussi à l’unicité culturelle de Kapuskasing.

Some of the most popular include: the Lumberjack Heritage Festival des bûcherons, held every year on the last weekend of July; the Festival de la St-Jean - the largest St-Jean-Baptiste celebration in Ontario held every third weekend in June; the Festival of Lights, which kicks off in mid-November and continues until mid-January; the Kapuskasing River Walleye Tournament – a two-day catch and release angling event held every year in August; and the popular Farmers’ Market held Saturdays in the Circle from August long weekend to Thanksgiving weekend.

In Moonbeam, two worlds live side by side: the rural life and the northern forest with its lakes and rivers. This reality gives a particular quality of life which is envied by many. Situated on Highway 11, 20 km east of Kapuskasing, Moonbeam is recognized by its own “cottage country” on Rémi Lake, the René Brunelle Provincial Park, the 34 km of nature trails and of course, its famous flying saucer roadside attraction.

Recreational activities change with the seasons. Summer calls for swimming, boating, fishing, wild berry picking, biking and hiking. Autumn leads enthusiasts into the woods for small and large game hunting. Winter weekends are spent ice-fishing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the trails, as well as downhill skiing, snowboarding and tubing at Rémi Ski Hill.

Built in the 1920s (and one of the first houses built in the village), the family-home of Arthur Léonard is now used to hone the skills of local artists and artisans. Learn the arts of sculpting, weaving and painting and discover the region’s local history and heritage through special exhibits. Residents of Opasatika are well serviced for their basic needs: there’s a post office, a Caisse populaire bank, a gas station, a convenience store, and in the summer they can eat at the newly built chip stand… poutine anyone? The owners of the Opaz Gas Bar have even created a campground behind the station equipped with electricity. The locals also have the opportunity to keep fit in the mini-gym, which is located in the old elementary school. A public library and a medical clinic are also located here.

The newly renovated Community Centre is used to organize multiple activities throughout the year, such as dances, bingos, and wedding receptions. The Club de la Bonne Humeur is a gathering place for the seniors to socialize and to partake in activities.
