Chambers August 2017 © Nathan Weaver Olson 2017 Acknowledgements There is a locally famous sign along the highway between the Bolivian cities of Vallegrande and El Trigal that marks the turn-off for the town of Moro Moro. It reads: “Don’t say that you know the world if you don’t know Moro Moro.” Although this dissertation began as an effort to study the history of Moro Moro, and more generally the province of Vallegrande, located in the Andean highlands of the department of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, the research and writing process has made me aware of an entire world of Latin American history. Thus, any recounting of the many people who have contributed to this project must begin with the people of Moro Moro themselves, whose rich culture and sense of regional identity first inspired me to learn more about Bolivian history. My companions in that early journey, all colleagues from the Mennonite Central Committee, included Patrocinio Garvizu, Crecensia García, James “Phineas” Gosselink, Dantiza Padilla, and Eloina Mansilla Guzmán, to name only a few. I owe my interest and early academic grounding in Colonial Latin American history to my UCSD professors Christine Hunefeldt, Nancy Postero, Eric Van Young, and Michael Monteón. Conflict Quarterly the field regardless of orders coming from Manila. Linn's analysis provides a wealth of new information on bodi the US Army's role in the conquest of the Philippines, as well as the nature of the Philippine Insurrection itself. Linn can also be credited with a clear writing style, which makes the book a joy to read. Nevertheless mere are problems in his methodology and interpretation of the documents. Linn contends that the conditions and methods of the insurgents were different throughout the Islands, forcing district commanders to develop their own methods, but concentrates his study on US Army counterinsurgency methods on four military districts on the Island of Luzon. Yet, the Army encountered resistance throughout the Philippine Islands and a better case could be built if districts were not chosen only from the Island of Luzon. Linn states that each district commander adopted policies and actions to their own district, regardless of commands from higher headquarters. In comparing the methods used in each of the districts, four elements stand out which are common to all. First, each commander relied on constant scouting and sweeps in their areas to keep guerrilla forces on the move. The object of these operations was to wear down the guerrilla's will to resist and to destroy their food supplies. Second, the Army developed extensive local contacts to aid in the garnering of intelligence on guerrillalocationsandmovements. Third, theyused local forces to aid in the pacification efforts. These forces were to provide intelligence on enemy movements and to guard the towns and villages, allowing the Army to place more troops in the field looking for guerrillas. -

These symbols became widespread in the Bolivian public sphere and were the dominant national discourse for the Bolivian nation. However, dissatisfied highland elite began crafting an alternative national project and these two competing Nationalisms clashed and eventually led to the 1899 Federal Revolution. -

Wilkin2, B. Williams1 & R. W. Scotland1 Summary. An account of the genus Ipomoea L. in Bolivia is presented. 102 species are recognised in the country and each of these is described. Notes are provided on diagnostic features, distribution, habitat, phenology and conservation status. A dichotomous key to all species is provided together with additional informal keys focussing on outstanding features of morphology and ecology. Line drawings illustrate the new species described and pho- tographs are provided to facilitate identification and draw attention to key diagnostic features. Maps of the distr- ibution in Bolivia of selected species are also provided. 18 species are described as new of which 14 are endemic to Bolivia: Ipomoea appendiculata J. R. I.
