Williamson "SYMPHONY IN PEN" Indicative of the attention which has been aroused by the present exhibition of sketches and paintings by Donald Greason, now on view in the exhibition foyer, are reviews by William Germain Dooley, in the "Boston Evening Tran- script," and Dorothy Adlow, in the "Christian Science Monitor." Mr. Dooley has written in part: "Donald Greason has given the Bos- ton orchestra a sympathetic study and interpreted it with an artistic skill that is worthy of a Koussevitzky or a Muck. His is the style of color restraint, of nervous line that communicates signifi- cant impressions with the economy that only comes from careful and gifted survey of the visual problem. The Editor of the Souvenir has had occasion to remark in previous editions that each Legislature has some peculiar characteristic to distinguish it from all others It fell to the lot of the Legislature of 1898, for the first time in over 30 years, or the usuil span of a generation, to make war preparations and to discuss war measures. The breaking out of the war with Spain found our Legislature rjady to do its part promptly and patriotically. With absolute unanimity and no more delay than was necessary for the making of the proper motions and the sig- nature of the bill by Governor Wolcott, the whole transaction occupying less than half an hour, the war appropriation of half a million dollars was voted ; and in the Senate the enactment of the measure was greeted with three cheers. No partisan discussion but patriotic action marked every measure of similar import. But this Souvenir is not intended as a record of what was done.

The grizzled old buccaneer claimed to be a Venetian seaman who had piloted the ship of Lord Byron during the poet’s adventures in the Adriatic and the Greek archipelago, and his fantastic tales helped the young composer keep his mind off the danger aboard the tossing vessel. They landed safely, but the experience of that storm and the image of Lord Byron painted by the corsair stayed with him. When Berlioz arrived in Rome, he immersed himself in Byron’s poem The Corsair, reading much of it in, of all places, St. Peter’s Basilica. “During the fierce summer heat I spent whole days there ... drinking in that burning poetry,” he wrote in his Memoirs. It was also at that time that word reached him that his fiancée in Paris, Camile Moke, had thrown him over in favor of another suitor.

(2008) Directed by Dr. Mary Ashley Barret. 103 pp. Ronald Roseman was an internationally acclaimed oboe soloist, chamber musician, teacher, recording artist, and composer whose career spanned over 40 years. A renowned oboist, he performed in some of America’s most influential institutions and ensembles including the New York Woodwind Quintet, the New York Philharmonic, and the New York Bach Aria Group. His contributions to 20th Century oboe pedagogy through his own unique teaching methodology enabled him to contribute to the success of both his own personal students and many others in the field of oboe and woodwind performance. His body of compositions that include oboe as well as other instruments and voice serve to encapsulate his career as a noteworthy 20th Century composer. Roseman’s musicianship and unique teaching style continues to be admired and respected worldwide by oboists and musicians. The purpose of this study is to present a biographical overview and pedagogical techniques of oboist Ronald Roseman. This study will be divided into sections about his early life, teaching career, performance career and his pedagogical influence upon his students. Exercises and techniques developed by Roseman for the enhancement of oboe pedagogy will also be included. Interviews have been conducted with his wife and three former well-known students in order to better serve the focus of this study. The author also contributed pedagogical techniques compiled during a two-year period of study with Roseman. Appendices include a discography of recorded materials, the New York Woodwind Quintet works list, Roseman’s published article on Baroque Ornamentation, a list of his compositions with premiere dates and performers, and interview questions.
