W M GOULDING, BANGOR 1965034 Ffynhonnell / Source Mr W M Goulding, Bangor. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1964-65 Disgrifiad / Description One of the sad and often too frequent trends of our time is the disappearance of local newspapers. The Library has always striven to make known its interest in preserving complete files of newspapers and periodicals--particularly, but not solely, those of Welsh interest, and it is therefore to be regretted that printers' files of newspapers, journals, and other more apparently ephemeral publications are still being destroyed instead of being added to the national collection. Through the good offices of Mr. Goulding (the General Manager), the directors of The Chronicle have enabled the Library to acquire a file of The Flintshire Observer, 1920-42, 1944-6, 1948-9 and 1951-7, The North Wales Pioneer, 1919-28, 1930-4, 1936-42, 1944-9, and 1951-6, and useful runs of The Welsh Coast Pioneer, and The Rhyl Observer (Dept of Printed Books).

The first of these manuscripts is an autograph book, which also contains numerous photographs and engravings and a few letters and newspaper cuttings (NLW MS 12353D). The autographs and portraits are of distinguished Welshmen, men of letters and prominent figures in eisteddfod circles. The autographs were collected mainly at eisteddfodau, 1858-81, though signatures of prominent personages collected before this period have been pasted in. The book is well indexed and as it contains notes on, and pseudonyms of, many local bards, it is a useful work of reference. Among the photographs and engravings are included those of Thomas Bevan ('Caradawc'), Thomas Edwards ('Twm o'r Nant'), John Elias, Christmas Evans, John Evans (the Elizabethan astrologer), David Griffiths, Nevern, Joseph Harris ('Gomer'), Owen Jones ('Owain Myfyr'), Theophilus Jones, the Brecknockshire historian, John Jones ('Ioan Emlyn'), John Jones, ('Talhaiarn'), William Ellis Jones ('Cawrdaf'), Lewis Morris ('o Fon'), William Owain Pughe, Robert Parry ('Robin Ddu Eryri'), Joshua Thomas, the Baptist historian, Micah Thomas, William Williams ('Gwilym Peris'), and Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg'). The other two manuscripts are scrapbooks containing an interesting collection of newspaper cuttings, printed notices, and a few manuscript letters assembled by 'Caradawc' (NLW MSS 12354-5F). The bulk of the cuttings, covering the period 1831-63, are taken from periodicals and local newspapers such as Monmouthshire Merlin, Merthyr Guardian, and Seren Gomer, with occasional extracts from English periodicals. They deal in the main with political, social, and cultural events of local and national interest; there are also frequent notices and reports of local eisteddfodau, particularly those of 'Cymreigyddion y Fenni', theatre notices, obituaries of notable Welshmen, letters to the press on subjects of Welsh cultural interest, poems in English and Welsh, and verses in praise of local gentry and commemorating topical events, etc. Items meriting special mention are a printed appeal, dated 22 August 1832, entitled Anerchiad at Genedl yr Hen Gymru oddi wrth Cymreigyddion Caerludd, being an eloquent plea for the use of the Welsh language in the lawcourts; a printed appeal in Welsh under the caption Cymmru, Cymmro, a Chymmraeg, 16 November 1840, sent out by 'Caradawc' to members of 'Cymreigyddion y Fenni', of which he had then ceased to be a member, appealing to them to elect to the committee of the 'Cymreigyddion' patriotic Welshmen who would rescue the society from the control of the English element and safeguard the interests of the Welsh language in accordance with the original intentions of the founders; and a full report of the opening of the which appeared in the Times, 6 June 1857.

VOCABULARIUM BIBLIAE 1965102 Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1964-65 Disgrifiad / Description A fourteenth-century vellum manuscript of English provenance containing a Latin text of the Vocabularium Bibliae or Dictionarium Biblicum or Summa super difficilia Bibliae, i.e., an explanation in dictionary form of obscure words in the Bible, by William Briton (Breton) (ob. 1356), a comparatively unknown British theologian, who has been described in turn as a Franciscan and a Cistercian, and who is said by John Bale, bishop of Ossory, 'apparently by a guess', to have been a Welshman (see D.N.B., Vol. VI, p. 359) (NLW MS 18952C). The volume consists of 104 leaves, measuring approximately 258mm. by 192mm., written in double columns, 41 to 45 lines to each column, with a marginal catchword for each entry, a large red and blue decorative capital with extensive red and blue marginal penwork for each successive introductory letter of the alphabet, and alternate red and blue initial letters for successive dictionary entries. The first page is slightly rubbed, and original flaws in some leaves have been carefully avoided by the scribe. The text is incomplete at the end, lacking all entries after 'Thorus'. The volume is bound in eighteenth century calf, rebacked and repaired, with two metal clasps and catches. On the first fly-leaf are the inscriptions '49. Dictionarium Biblicum', 'Summa Britonis super difficilia Biblie', and 'Dictionarium Biblicum', and on the inside upper cover the signature of 'Tho. Martin', i.e., Thomas Martin (1697-1771), known as 'Honest Tom Martin of Palgrave', an antiquary who owned a large collection of manuscripts, some of which he sold in 1769 and the remainder were dispersed after his death. The present work does not appear to have been published in its entirety, but specimens from it were printed by A. M. Bandini in his Catalogus codicum Latinorum . . . Bibliothecae Mediceae Laurentianae, Vol. IV, pp. 213 et seq, and by Ducange in the preface to his Glossarium ad Scriptores mediae et infimae Latinitatis. A complete, but slightly abridged, version of the text, written c. 1400, is contained in NLW MS 3090. The Friends of the National Library of Wales contributed £80 towards the cost of this manuscript.
