FACT SHEET #11 / NOVEMBER 2020 VOLUNTARY CARBON OFFSETTING A number of airlines already offer voluntary carbon offsetting for passengers, how do they work? Each flight produces carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and whilst there are a lot of things being done by airlines to reduce the fuel use and CO2 emissions, often passengers would like to know how they can help lower the CO2 footprint of their travel. Voluntary carbon offsetting is one option available to passengers, either through an airline programme directly, or a third-party offset provider. What are offsets? 44 A large number of corporate travellers The name ‘offset’ can cover a variety of sources of CO2 reduction. • Air Transport & Tourism: Regional Connectivity and LIAT's Role
Air Transport & Tourism: Regional Connectivity and LIAT’s role Presentation Air Transport Meeting November 2018 General Overview Tourism implies people travelling for fun, business having new and varied experiences both internally in different countries. People want to travel and stay in places outside of their normal environment. This cannot be achieved without the help of air transport Advances in aviation has meant that today flying for most people is a way of life. Tourism and air transport therefore complement each other. We know that for us in the Caribbean tourism is vital to our economies. Many Types of Tourism on Offer • Sun & Sand • Visiting Friends and Relatives • Rest & Relaxation • Business • Ecotourism • Cultural • Sports • Medical Regional Perspective Many recent studies indicate that Intra- Caribbean traffic has declined but there is growth in international traffic. Recent CDB report speaks to 3 components to connectivity; Long haul, intra-regional and domestic Decline is very stark in the sub region- 33%. As the main provider of intra- regional air services , LIAT and by implication tourism is negatively impacted. A smart product mix should combine and link international and regional tourism Extra-regional connections dominate Importance of Regional Tourism The World Travel and Tourism Council has long documented the vast contribution of domestic and regional tourism. The developed countries embrace this concept whole heartedly. In the Caribbean we have been slow to adopt this approach. 99% focus on international tourists. Decline in intra-regional travel is a regional problem which must be addressed. Studies show that the average spend of the regional traveler is significant.

The idea is to identify preferable potential airline matches in light of fleet 18 19 mix, ownership structure, and geographical proximity. 20 21 Design/Methodology/Approach 22 23 In order to achieve our objective, all possible combinations of M&A pairs are considered in the 24 25 analysis, which is developed in a two-stage approach. First, the M&A Data Envelopment Analysis 26 27 (DEA) model efficiency and returns-to-scale estimates are computed. Then, Robust Regression 28 29 and Multinomial Logistic Regression are respectively used to discriminate these estimates in terms 30 of such business-related variables. 31 32 33 Findings 34 35 The results reveal that these different contextual variables significantly impact virtual efficiency 36 37 and returns-to-scale levels. Private ownership, passenger focus, and a better match between aircraft 38 size and demand for flights appear to be key drivers for merged airline efficiency.
