34 35 This cover was created with the Carpentry department. They are responsible for the construction of scenery that appears on the stages of the National Theatre: even though a door or wall could look marble or concrete, it nearly always starts as sheets of birch ply or MDF. The highly skilled carpenters work from technical drawings to build timber flattage (walls), windows, doors and staircases. They also build large prop elements such as benches, bars and fireplaces. The department is conscious of the environmental impact of scenery making and strives to reuse as much as possible. The Carpentry department ranges from 020 7452 3000 young apprentices to carpenters with over 30 years’ experience. nationaltheatre.org.uk
