And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” (Jeremiah 31:33) Jesus shatters any absolute dissociation of commandments and love. He says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments . Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father” (John 14:15, 21). “If you keep my commandments , you will abide in my love , just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love” (John 15:10). Thinking in terms of commandments and obedience did not stop Jesus from enjoying the love of his Father. And he expects that our thinking of him as one who commands will not jeopardize our love relationship with him either. This is crucial to realize because the new covenant relationship that we have with God through Jesus Christ is not a covenant without commandments. The basic difference between the old covenant offered by God through the Mosaic law and the new covenant offered by God through Christ is not that one had commandments and the other doesn’t. The key differences are that (1) the Messiah, Jesus, has come and shed the blood of the new covenant (Matthew 26:28; Hebrews 10:29) so that henceforth he is the Mediator of a new covenant, so that all saving, covenant-keeping faith is conscious faith in him; (2) the old covenant has therefore become “obsolete” (Hebrews 8:13) and does not govern the new-covenant people of God (2 Corinthians 3:7–18; Romans 7:4, 6; Galatians 3:19); and (3) the promised new heart and the enabling power of the Holy Spirit have been given through faith. In the old covenant, the gracious enabling power to obey God was not poured out as fully as it is since Jesus. “To this day the Lord has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear” (Deuteronomy 29:4). What’s new about the new covenant is not that there are no commandments, but that God’s promise has come true! “I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts” (Jeremiah 31:33). “I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes” (Ezekiel 36:27). 5 WWE Wrestlers Roddy Piper Loved (& 5 That He Hated) During his time in the business, Roddy Piper made plenty of friends but there were also guys he really didn't like. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper will forever be a legend in the wrestling world. The highlight of his career was his time with the WWE, in which he main evented the first-ever WrestleMania . The Hot Rod always spoke his mind and wasn't afraid to confront people he had a problem with. This resulted in him making many an enemy backstage, however, his straight forward attitude also adhered him to many wrestlers within the locker room who he remained friends with for years. 10 Loved: Dusty Rhodes. Piper and Rhodes are two of the greatest promos in wrestling history. So it was only natural that the two got along with one another. After Dusty's sad passing, Piper declared him a "national treasure." He was also very emotional about his death and reminisced about the good times they had together and the funny stories they shared. Piper loved Rhodes like a brother and was full of admiration for The American Dream. 9 Hated: Hulk Hogan. Many a wrestler did not like Hulk Hogan due to his backstage politics and how he'd influence decision-making in matches. Piper and Hogan had an ever-present feud with one another during Hogan's time at the top. However, Piper was frustrated with Hogan's backstage antics and felt like he deserved more respect for his part in their feud. Piper, during the final years of his life, admitted he had huge respect for Hogan and they had made up. 8 Loved: Andre The Giant. The two made brilliant rivals in the ring, however, both men loved each other outside of it. Piper has shared many a story of the two's time together as well as how much fun they had in the ring. The two hazed each other many times backstage as that was the norm back in the '80s. However, clearly, the two respected the hell out of each other otherwise they wouldn't have worked together so much over many promotions. 7 Hated: Mr. T. Technically, Mr. T was a WWE wrestler for a short period of time. It was also clear as day that Piper despised The A-Team star. The animosity stemmed from Piper who felt Mr. T didn't deserve to main event WrestleMania . Also, Piper felt Mr. T didn't put enough effort in preparation for the match, so he put him in legit wrestling holds. This resulted in the two having a boxing match at the following Mania, which was pitiful. 6 Loved: Ronda Rousey. Roddy Piper was the wrestler who Ronda Rousey admired most. The two became close friends and when Rousey debuted in WWE, she sported Piper's iconic ring gear. They became friends as they were both trained by the same person. They had a relationship akin to a father and daughter. Piper gave Ronda permission to use his gear and the "Rowdy" nickname during her time in UFC. The same went for carrying on his legacy during her run in WWE. 5 Hated: Stone Cold Steve Austin. Piper and Stone Cold rarely met each other inside a WWE ring. However, the two did have real-life beef outside the squared circle. Piper was released from his WWE Legends deal and his podcast was canceled over it. This was due to Will Sasso doing an impersonation of Stone Cold which the Rattlesnake didn't like. It is unsure whether Stone Cold played a part in Piper being released, however, that is what The Hot Rod believed. 4 Loved: Cowboy Bob Orton. The father of Randy Orton was always close to Roddy Piper during their time together in WWE. The two had many crazy times together outside of the ring from fighting at bars to leaving their car on train tracks. Clearly, the two had a wild time with one another which led to them become such close friends. Bob Orton spoke of the respect and love he had for Piper after his passing stating, "Everybody loved him." 3 Hated: Kevin Nash. The beef between these two culminated in WCW, however, both men are fondly remembered for their time in WWE. At Slamboree 1997, Piper and Nash disagreed about how the match and finish should play out with Piper not following what was supposed to happen. That resulted in the two having a legitimate fight backstage. Over the years, both men claimed that they were ultimately the winner but nothing was ever confirmed. 2 Loved: Ric Flair. After Piper's passing, Ric Flair stated that "the world won't be the same," highlighting how much love he had for the Hot Rod. The two men were best friends during their time together in the wrestling business and beyond. So much so, that the two had one last Tag Team Title run during the twilight of their careers. Flair also admitted that he cried for days after Piper's passing due to the close bond they had.

  • Mick Foley: Pro Wrestling and the Contradictions of a Contemporary American Hero
Mick Foley: Pro Wrestling and the Contradictions of a Contemporary American Hero When professional wrestler Mick Foley won the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE, formerly WWF) World Heavyweight Title on Monday Night RAW at the end of 1998, he became a heroic character in the realm of pro wrestling, then at its height of popularity on cable television. Many considered Foley an unusual hero. His character blended masculine heroic qualities of tenacity, endurance, and hard work with characteristics not usually seen in the American hero: a need for communal acceptance, a desire for intellectual growth, and an unattractive aesthetic, with Foley’s missing teeth, severed ear, unkempt hair, pear-shaped figure, and lack of the muscular definition usually expected in the wrestling hero. Mick Foley is a paradox, as his character both embraces and defies elements of the traditional masculine hero. This redefinition of the heroic figure in wrestling, according to Dalbir Singh Sehmby (2000: 202), stems from wrestling’s complex relationship among fans, promoters, the media, and Foley himself. Sammond (2005: 133-134) writes that “whether professional wrestling is progressive, transgressive, or regressive (or all these at different moments) depends on how it serves the social goals of its producers, performers, audiences, and its critics.” Because of wrestling’s participatory nature, allowing fans to directly influence the product, wrestling heroes may perhaps be more indicative of the paradoxes in defining masculinity and American heroism than the heroes created through many other media products. The construction of Foley as hero reveals America’s changing and conflicting values regarding its traditions and its definition of masculinity.

The myth of the unbeatable fighter is just that, a myth. In what will go down as the single most memorable UFC fight in history, Ronda Rousey was not only defeated, but systematically destroyed by a fighter and a coaching staff that had spent years preparing for that night. On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds.
