  • Mick Foley: Pro Wrestling and the Contradictions of a Contemporary American Hero
Mick Foley: Pro Wrestling and the Contradictions of a Contemporary American Hero When professional wrestler Mick Foley won the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE, formerly WWF) World Heavyweight Title on Monday Night RAW at the end of 1998, he became a heroic character in the realm of pro wrestling, then at its height of popularity on cable television. Many considered Foley an unusual hero. His character blended masculine heroic qualities of tenacity, endurance, and hard work with characteristics not usually seen in the American hero: a need for communal acceptance, a desire for intellectual growth, and an unattractive aesthetic, with Foley’s missing teeth, severed ear, unkempt hair, pear-shaped figure, and lack of the muscular definition usually expected in the wrestling hero. Mick Foley is a paradox, as his character both embraces and defies elements of the traditional masculine hero. This redefinition of the heroic figure in wrestling, according to Dalbir Singh Sehmby (2000: 202), stems from wrestling’s complex relationship among fans, promoters, the media, and Foley himself. Sammond (2005: 133-134) writes that “whether professional wrestling is progressive, transgressive, or regressive (or all these at different moments) depends on how it serves the social goals of its producers, performers, audiences, and its critics.” Because of wrestling’s participatory nature, allowing fans to directly influence the product, wrestling heroes may perhaps be more indicative of the paradoxes in defining masculinity and American heroism than the heroes created through many other media products. The construction of Foley as hero reveals America’s changing and conflicting values regarding its traditions and its definition of masculinity.

The myth of the unbeatable fighter is just that, a myth. In what will go down as the single most memorable UFC fight in history, Ronda Rousey was not only defeated, but systematically destroyed by a fighter and a coaching staff that had spent years preparing for that night. On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds.

  • Carlos Wesley Byas “Don” Part 1 (1938 – 1946)
1 The TENORSAX of CARLOS WESLEY BYAS “DON” PART 1 (1938 – 1946) Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: June 3, 2020 2 Born: Muskogee, Oklahoma, Oct. 21, 1912 Died: Amsterdam, Holland, Aug. 24, 1972. Introduction: Don Byas has always belonged to my great tenorsax favourites, and he was so good that it is unjust to classify him as belonging to some ‘Hawkins school’. He was a master of all tempi, the slowest ballads to the fastest uptempo, and he had always something important to say with his horn. Although he visited Norway several times, I am sorry to say I never met him. Early history: Began on violin, then switched to altosax. As a teenager worked with Bennie Moten and Terrence Holder, also played in Oklahoma City with Walter Page's Blue Devils (ca. 1929). In 1931-32 led own band: Don Carlos and his Collegiate Ramblers (based at Langston College, Oklahoma). In 1933 left Oklahoma with Bert Johnson and his Sharps and Flats, changed to tenorsax with this band, worked in California and then remained in Los Angeles. In July 1935 played in Lionel Hampton's Big Band, then joined big band led by Eddie Barefield. With Buck Clayton's 14 Gentlemen of Harlem in spring of 1936, briefly with Lorenzo Flennoy, subsequently worked under Charlie Echols' leadership from August 1936. To New York with Eddie Mallory's Band (March 1937) accompanying Ethel Waters, remained with this band for about 18 months, then worked briefly with Don Redman and Lucky Millinder. Joined Andy Kirk in February 1939. Left Kirk in July 1940, worked with Edgar Hayes' Band and also toured with Benny Carter (September 1940).
