We are incredibly excited for you to enjoy our latest issue, highlighting the best of fall fun in NYC. From the hottest concerts, to new Broadway shows, to the most exciting museum exhibits, we have curated from all over the city for the coolest things to do this month. As you may have noticed on our cover, this issue is a special milestone for us. In September of 2012 we launched NEW YORK CITY Monthly as the newest entertainment and lifestyle magazine in the city. From those humble beginnings, we have seen our readership soar taking us from newbie start-up to the second highest circulation lifestyle magazine in Manhattan. We spent some time discussing this while we worked on the issue, reminiscing about the early years and how much the city has changed since then. To that end, we did a special feature story called “Then & Now” in which we looked at 13 of the most interesting changes of the last 5 years. In a city as dynamic and ever expanding as ours is, 5 years is a big block of time, you’ll be amazed at just how much has evolved. See page 18 to check out what we highlighted. This issue also marked one of our best ever for top shelf interviews. From rockers, to country music stars, to celeb chefs, we have some fantastic exclusive Q&A’s this month. Trust me when I tell you, it wasn’t easy getting big name interviews in the beginning, but now in 2017 we have the great pleasure of interviewing some of the brightest stars across all facets of entertainment, fashion, sports, the arts, and more. As we take a moment to grasp our 5-year anniversary and all of the great times and success we have enjoyed, we wanted to make sure to say thank you. It’s been an exhilarating ride, one that only exists because of great readers, business partners, advertisers, and overall supporters who have been there to make the vision a reality. To each and every one who is reading this right now, and to the scores of people who write in to tell us how much they enjoy NYCM and look forward to each month’s new issue, we offer our heartfelt thank you and genuine gratitude. We love that you love our magazine. Cheers to our first 5 years in the greatest city on Earth. How incredibly fortunate we are to live and work here. • Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. Harrington’s Pie and Mash Shop 3 Selkirk Road Tooting, London. Open for business since 1908. RACHEL EDWARDS JENNY GERSTEN SEAVIEW PRODUCTIONS NATE KOCH, Executive Producer FIONA RUDIN BARROW STREET THEATRE JEAN DOUMANIAN REBECCA GOLD “A Customer!” present My name is Rachel Edwards and I am the originating producer of Tooting Arts Club’s Sweeney The Tooting Arts Club production of Todd. On behalf of myself, and my producing partners Jenny Gersten, Greg Nobile, Jana Shea and Nate Koch, it is our pleasure to welcome you to Harrington’s Pie and Mash Shop! In the spring of 1908, number 3 Selkirk Road Tooting, London, became the home of Harrington’s Pie and Mash shop when it was bought by Bertie Harrington and his wife Clara. Little has changed in this tiny Tooting eatery since it first opened for business some 109 years ago. The Harrington fam- ily still run the shop, the original green tiles still adorn the walls and the menu remains unchanged since the days of Queen Victoria. A Musical Thriller Music and Lyrics Book by The idea to stage Sweeney Todd in London’s oldest pie and mash shop was one which I lived with for several years before I dared to say it out loud. It felt too outrageous, too complicated, in essence – it felt impossible. A simple ‘yes’ from Beverley Mason – owner of Harrington’s, and great STEPHEN SONDHEIM HUGH WHEELER grand-daughter of Bertie and Clara – changed everything. Subsequently, an unforgettable collabora- tion was born that set in motion a chain of events that was nothing short of extraordinary.

  • Private Romeo Movie
Title: PRIVATE ROMEO (feature film, 98mins) Writer/Director: Alan Brown Based on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet When eight cadets are left behind at an isolated military high school, the greatest romantic drama ever written seeps out of the classroom and permeates their lives. Incorporating the original text of Romeo and Juliet, YouTube videos, and lip-synced indie rock music, Private Romeo takes us to a mysterious and tender place that only Shakespeare could have inspired. Cast: Seth Numrich, Matt Doyle, Hale Appleman, Chris Bresky, Sean Hudock, Adam Barrie, Bobby Moreno, and Charlie Barnett Distributors View the trailer: www.youtube.com/user/privateromeomovie Visit the website for updated news, background: www.privateromeothemovie.com/ http://www.facebook.com/pages/Private-Romeo/123162147748863 http://twitter.com/privateromeo The soundtrack features songs from the indie-rock group Bishop Allen. Listen for their hit songs, The Magpie and Busted Heart. Private Romeo is Alan’s fourth film. His first, the half-hour narrative O Beautiful (Strand Releasing, Boys Life 4), won the Future Filmmaker Award at the 2002 Palm Springs International Short Film Festival, and was an official selection of the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. It was singled out by critics as “a rare piece of film making.” His feature debut, Book of Love (Sundance Channel Home Entertainment) which stars Simon Baker, Frances O’Connor, and Bryce Dallas Howard, was praised for its “creepy eroticism and sly intelligence” and for being “a movie that feels about as real as it’s possible to be.” It was nominated for a Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.
