OUR COMMON FUTURE INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE CULTURE 2 OUR COMMON FUTURE: Miskolc? No question

Miskolc invites and awaits everybody who imagines his future together with us and who choose this developing city lying in a Northern Hungarian environment as their living space.

In this booklet we present our city, with providing a colourful selection of facts only. Let the most important facts speak about our city instead of us: The most convincing among them are: •• Available qualified workforce at competitive costs; relatively high population: about 300.000 inhabitants, including the agglomeration •• Thanks to the high level dual vocational training system, continuous supply of able and well trained employees is ensured •• 3.000 students of engineering at the University of Miskolc: a unique venue in •• Very low employee fluctuation rate <2% Compared to others: Budapest >10%; West Hungary >7% •• Excellent infrastructure: motorway, public transportation, energy supply, information communication network •• Optimal location for reaching Western and Eastern European markets •• Well established database about suppliers having excellent understanding of metals •• Availability of highest support intensity is higher than in other regions! •• Rich industrial past and technical culture •• Beauty of the natural environment •• A city offering colourful and diverse cultural, sport and recreational possibilities •• Professional and effective investment promoting support ensured by Miskolc Holding

And for what more?

It was not us but the Financial Times that has recently declared the economic region of Miskolc to be highly attractive in terms of direct foreign investments. Launched among European cities, Miskolc reached the 16th place, out of almost a thousand of applicants and ahead of several major cities of Europe, on the competition searching future investment locations. In 2012, the city of Miskolc received the Investor Friendly Location certificate, title and logo within the Investor Friendly Location Programme launched by the Hungarian Investment and Trade Agency (HITA). The Hungarian Government declared it a Priority Development Centre in 2013.

INDUSTRY I KNOWLEDGE I CULTURE 3 Building Miskolc together

92 billion HUF arrived to Miskolc between 2010 and 2014. Developments creating jobs and targeting the community show the renewal of the city. These foresee a competitive and developing city worth investing in, as the investment will return.

Results of our efforts to create jobs and our support for promoting invest- ments are tangible. The economy that once had a strong main focus on heavy industry has become diverse and new technologies have been established thanks to the companies operating in the city such as BOSCH, Vodafone, Shinwa or the Gustav Wolf wire factory, providing jobs for many thousands of people. The Mechatronics Industrial Park is full, hence we have created a new one next to the . The first company to settle down in the Southern Industrial Park was the Takata Company Group, which has estab- lished automotive industrial technolo- gy and effected the largest greenfield investment of Hungary of the last 3 years! Launching of new technologies and new industrial plants required the establish- ment of an educational culture with a different approach, which was adopted by both the vocational training system and the University of Miskolc. Thanks to the cooperation established with the companies, supply of professionals and the de- velopment background for large companies are ensured. The city is therefore able to offer quality services from the nursery up to the university. With the environmentally conscious developments improving the quality of life of citizens, Miskolc may identify itself as a “green city”. We were the first Hungarian city to have signed the cooperation agreement with the international Green City

4 OUR COMMON FUTURE: MISKOLC movement in order to enable the environmentally friendly realisation of investments and developments. The Miskolc Geothermal Project is the most significant among the envi- ronmental investments, even on a Central Eastern European level, realisation of which enabled Miskolc to catch up with the most environmentally conscious Hungarian cities. District heating that has been extended with geothermal energy brought to surface in the border of the city provides envi- ronmentally friendly thermal energy for about 20.000 apart- ments, public institutes and industrial facilities. Tourism, festivals – the Opera Festival, the Beer Festival, Cinefest International Film Festival, Aspic Carnival – have made cultural and gastronomic tourism leading sectors of Miskolc. We invested billions into the development of tourism during recent years. The most significant investment was the complex cultural and ecotourism development of Diósgyőr and Lillafüred, the budget of which was 2.71 billion HUF. The Lillafüred Hanging Gardens was renewed and the Castle of Diósgyőr got back its old glory within the framework of the project consisting of several items. The lido being renewed next to the Cave Bath of Miskolctapolca is going to be the first bath in Hungary that is built according to the Green City principles and that actually exists together with and forms a part of the environment. The future development opportunities of Miskolc are clear: the government has declared the city and its vicinity a Priority Development Area, enabling further economic progress, creation of even more jobs, thoughtful and long Dr. Kriza Ákos term development of the city. The urban development Mayor of Miskolc CCR strategy created by consultations and joint thinking and the development programmes in it make the city more attractive for investors. Miskolc is ready to receive them in order to support each other towards success through investments aiming at mutual advantages.

INDUSTRY I KNOWLEDGE I CULTURE 5 6 OUR COMMON FUTURE: MISKOLC In the heart of Europe

•• It lies in the attraction zone of three countries, all reachable within 1.5 hours (at a distance of 150 km) •• It is a part of the European motorway network thanks to the •• InterCity trains depart every hour to inland and abroad destinations •• Excellent logistics connections on rail and motorway

Airports •• Miskolc – sport airfield (within 1 km) •• Košice (SK) (84 km, international flights) •• (119 km, international flights) •• (200 km, international flights)

Miskolc has excellent logistics connections thanks to the M30 motorway and its railway connections. A logistics centre with direct railway connection and significant storage capacity (ÁTI DEPO, LOGICON) is located near to the proposed development areas. Local and international transportation firms and customs warehouses are available for companies.

INDUSTRY Miskolc our common future

The present image of the city does not share any similarities with its previous one. A new and modern technology industry is emerging on the base of the traditional industrial culture of the city.

Toolstyle, having recently realised a 600 million HUF investment and building its future on the basis of the rich work culture of Digép, is a good example for this. It cannot be denied that the 1990s had brought the decline of heavy industry in Miskolc. The popula- tion started to decrease, but Miskolc did not accept this and, though the region was one of those which lost a lot in the political changes of the early 1990s, has become a success story in the recent years.

INDUSTRY I KNOWLEDGE I CULTURE 7 Between 2010 and 2014, beyond the results of the public works programme, more than 3.000 new jobs were created in Miskolc, most of them in the manufac- turing and service sectors. Also the Hungarian Government recognised the efforts of Miskolc to create jobs: this made Miskolc a Priority Development Area in 2013 and it joined the club of cities like Győr or Kecskemét. Investors also discovered this opportunity offering the rich industrial heritage of this city, the work culture of its people and one of the most modern university education for the industrial sector and mainly its overall leading branch, the auto- motive industry.

Industrial parks: Full comfort for investors

Presently, Miskolc has two industrial parks operated and developed by municipal companies. The area of the Mechatronics Industrial Park has reached 224 hectares. The Miskolc South Industrial Park is located on 93.5 hectares in the south border of Miskolc, next to the access road to the M30 motorway. Beyond their strategic location and modern infrastructure, the two industrial parks offer companies such a complex and customised business services that provide a firm background for their steady operation and realisation of their ideas.

8 OUR COMMON FUTURE: MISKOLC Takata Corporation established its Hungarian subsidiary in October 2013. Takata Safety Systems Hungary Ltd. started the production of airbag systems in October 2014, in its new factory located in the Miskolc South Industrial Park. The company group invested 68.3 million EUR into the new factory and about 60.000 sqm of industrial halls were constructed on its 25 hectares.

Takata: investment record within a time record

Miskolc became ever attractive for investors during the past 4 years: the Japanese Takata company constructed its airbag manufacturing plant through the largest greenfield investment of Hungary, with plans to provide jobs for 1.000 people. Takata Corporation is a worldwide leading supplier in the field of automotive security systems (products include steering wheels, airbags, seatbelts, electronic products and child safety systems) which the company supplies for the largest automotive companies.

INDUSTRY I KNOWLEDGE I CULTURE 9 10 OUR COMMON FUTURE: MISKOLC Bosch: Start-Stop for automotive industry

Robert Bosch Energy and Body Ltd. supplies automotive parts for major automotive manufacturing companies. From air conditioning systems through electric motors to wiper systems, new products are continuously introduced, hence the number of employees is also increasing. The Start-Stop mode starter that was developed in Hungary is a product of this factory delivering to every European country and to Australia and the United States as well. Besides automotive products, the eBike propulsion, an engine unit using a highly developed and intelligent assistant system, is also an important product of the factory and Hungarian professionals are responsible for its manufacturing and technology.

Shinwa: the fi rst impulse came from Japan

The 1998 investment of the Shinwa Company Group is to be considered as the first significant foreign investment in Miskolc. Several departments operate in the Miskolc plant: assembly, plastic processing, painting and laser engraving plants. Shinwa Precision Ltd has been operating as a second-round supplier of the automotive industry since the beginnings. Nowadays, the company deals mostly with plastic casting of CD players and air conditioning front panels for dashboards and their button sets. Shinwa Preci- sion Ltd. produces and mounts front panels for several well-known models.

INDUSTRY I KNOWLEDGE I CULTURE 11 Chamber: The Reliable Partner

Today the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Chamber of Commerce and Indus- try (BOKIK) is a decisive economic driver in the county. Due to its geographical location, the BOKIK maintains a traditionally good relationship with the similar chambers of the adjacent countries and with the economic development organi- sations of almost every EU Member State. BOKIK has been a reliable partner for enterprises in their daily work for 20 years. It has close connections to the international companies operating in the county and supports small and medium sized enterprises with events and services. A priority objective of BOKIK is to contribute to the export performance of the SME sector and the strengthening of innovation through its professional programmes. An important task of the BOKIK is to ensure that the dual vocational training provides companies with well qualified professionals meeting business needs as well. Joining the “Opening to the East” economic development programme, the BOKIK concluded two very important cooperation agreements. One of them was concluded with the economic development organisation of the Chinese Shandong Province, and the other one with the Commerce Chamber of the Turkish City of Kayseri. The Carpathian Region Business Network assisting the cooperation be- tween the enterprises of the region with 13 business development offices in the 6 neighbouring countries has been established.

NOHAC: automotive suppliers together

By now, Central Eastern Europe has become the centre of automotive industry, practically every significant European and Far Eastern manufacturer is present in the region. It is in our interest that automotive parts arrive from local or nearby suppliers, meaning that the companies of the region – hence the member com- panies of the North Hungarian Automotive Cluster as well – have good chances to obtain a supplier position or to strengthen the existing ones. NOHAC was established with the participation of three leading suppliers, the BOKIK and the University of Miskolc in the end of 2006. Nowadays, the cluster still operates with active support from the Chamber. The aim of NOHAC is to improve the competitiveness, innovation and profitability of North Hungarian automotive suppliers through their partnership. It brings its members closer to the European automotive sector and the European automotive industry to its partners. Following its establishment, several companies joined the cluster comprising 70 members today. Most of them are metal and plastic processing enterprises but other activities are also represented. The aggregate number of employees of the member companies exceeds 11.600 and their aggregate revenue is nearly 420 billion HUF.

12 OUR COMMON FUTURE: MISKOLC INDUSTRY I KNOWLEDGE I CULTURE 13 14 OUR COMMON FUTURE: MISKOLC KNOWLEDGE Heartland of the economy

There are basically two preliminary requirements for a company to settle down: work culture traditions in the relevant industry, and the quality and conditions of training and education. Quality and stability of the educational background has therefore and important role in the preparation of investment decisions. There are 7 faculties and 1 institute at the University of Miskolc. The harmonised work and efficient cooperation of 28 secondary vocational and trade schools, 15 secondary grammar schools and 35 primary schools ensure training of future professionals.

University of Miskolc: knowledge is a great attraction

The University of Miskolc is a prominent place of technical education in the country, hence it plays an important role in the life of Miskolc and its vicinity. The Miskolc campus has unmatched capacities, its about 85 hectares large complex is unique in whole Europe. As the legal successor of the first technical higher education institute in the world, the University has a great past and traditions and it has become a real uni- versitas by now. Education takes place in seven institutes of the University where teachers and researchers await students of engineering with well-equipped labo- ratories and a modern curriculum at the Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering and the Faculty of Mechan- ical Engineering and Information Science. Students may read law, economics and arts at the Faculty of Social Sciences, and applicants may apply to the Faculty of Health Care Studies. The Bartók Béla Institute of Music is also a relevant attraction. Thanks to the extensive international cooperation network of the University of Mi- skolc, it provides its students with part-time courses at foreign universities as well. Several international corporations have chosen Miskolc as investment location during the last decade. Besides the openness of the municipal government, the companies settled down in the city primarily due to the intellectual capacity of the

INDUSTRY I KNOWLEDGE I CULTURE 15 University of Miskolc, locally available trained workforce, vicinity of eastern markets and the favourable logistics features. Lean Management specialisation playing a role in higher education and realising dual training was launched at the University. Miskolc has a decisive role in the R&D activities of the county and the region. The University of Miskolc having launched and contributed to several international pro- jects has an outstanding importance in that.

Bay Institutes: engineering services for the industry

The Logistics and Production Technology Institute of the Bay Zoltán Foundation for Applied Research (BAY-LOGI) founded in 1993 is the leading research insti- tute for applied research and development in the North Hungarian region. Logistics, production technology, informatics and recycling were the dominant fields during the first years of the institute. Several new fields have been opened and strengthened in the institute since then, such as structural integrity (operation- al safety), environmental management and mechatronics and new departments dealing with energy, material and nanotechnology have been also founded during recent years. With its present competences, the institute is capable of carrying out complex engineering development and service projects successfully. BAY-LOGI participates in the PhD education as well, granting self-financed scholarships. The institute carries out researches in the most various topics and offers them as services. The Laser Technology Department at the Institute for Materials Science and Technology (BAY-ATI) offers developments, technologies and services (welding, 3D cutting, surface modification) based on laser technology that meet the most critical international requirements as well.

MIRITC: qualified workers from the workforce

The main activity of the Miskolc Regional Integrated Training Centre (MIRITC Nonprofit Ltd.) is secondary vocational education, in the course of which high level practical education if provided for pupils from schools maintained by the Klebelsberg Institution Maintenance Centre (KIMC). The MIRITC is a basic institute not only for young people but for the training and retraining of adults as well. Besides National Training Registry (NTR) qualification programmes, competence based trainings are also dealt with, considering the professional requirements of the company ordering. The main orientation is towards programmes concerning mechanical engineer- ing professions, but other occupational groups were opened this year as well, pro- viding assistance especially in the fields of IT and electronics.

16 OUR COMMON FUTURE: MISKOLC The equipment of the central training facility enables that the organisation is present not only in full-time education but in other fields as well. Besides NTR qualification programmes, competence based trainings are also dealt with, considering the professional requirements of the company ordering. The Bosch company with its own tutors takes part from the practical training as well.

INDUSTRY I KNOWLEDGE I CULTURE 17 CULTURE This is also Miskolc!

Who has already been here knows that what a livable, friendly and hospitable city is Miskolc. The baths of Miskolc provide excellent opportunity for relaxation, recreation and reloading the mind. Several historic and cultural places of interest and sport facilities await visitors.

The most prominent parts of the “complex cultural and ecotourism development of Diósgyőr–Lillafüred” project were the development of the Castle of Diósgyőr and the renewal of the Lillafüred Hanging Gardens. Besides the castle, the project also includes the establishment of a jousting area and a Fair Square. Miskolc was enriched with a tourist attraction in 2014 that is unique in Hungary, the rebuilt Castle of Diósgyőr, hence the palace of King Louis the Great can be visited in its original glory. Out of the 4 elements of the project, the renewal of the Lillafüred Hanging Gardens and the introduction of its new features have been already realised. Lillafüred is a real pearl of Miskolc and a well-known climatic health resort. The building complex of the Palota Hotel standing on the banks of the Hámori Lake, the boating pond, the Szinva Waterfall, the highest one in the country, all contribute to its attraction. Who likes silence or requires healing air may find it in the Saint Stephen Cave where wonderful dripstone formations can be seen during the hourly guided tours. The real treasure at Miskolc is the Lake Cave that has been hollowed out by water from hard limestone during thousands of years and transformed into a cave bath. Uniquely in Europe, bathing in the naturally covered swimming pool filled with thermal water of pleasant temperature coming from the heart of the mountain and enjoying the clean and untainted air provide an impaired experience in the Cave Bath of Miskolctapolca. Uniquely in Europe, more than 800 cellars and winehous- es are located on the northern slope of the Avas Hill, in the very heart of the city of Miskolc. As particular catering venues, the wine cellars used to play a big role in the social life of the city, the Avas Wine Festival is therefore organised in the ancient cel- lar row of the Avas Hill. Events focusing on music, theatre, creative arts and literature provide rich recreation possibilities for visitors of Miskolc throughout every month of the year. Two festivals of international fame, the “Bartók + ...” Miskolc International Opera Festival and the Jameson CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival have acquired national and international fame due to their uniqueness and specialty.
