FAILURES AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF ALBANIAN NATIONALISM IN THE ERA OF NATIONALISM Nuray BOZBORA ABSTRACT The development of Albanian nationalism was not uniform from the beginning and it followed distinct patterns. First there were local protest movements, some were culturally based while others were created by the local elite to protest against local and specific problems. Later these different patterns in Albanian nationalism turned into mass uprising during the 1910 and 1911s. The aim of this paper is to understand the crucial period of mass uprising of Albanians and to analyse how these different patterns in the movement had participated and expressed themselves, what the basic motivation of uniting around a common purpose was, and ease and difficulties in this regard. Oral Tradition, 23/1 (2008): 3-14 Of Time, Honor, and Memory: Oral Law in Albania Fatos Tarifa This essay provides a historical account of the role of oral tradition in passing on from generation to generation an ancient code of customary law that has shaped and dominated the lives of northern Albanians until well into the mid-twentieth century. This traditional body of customary law is known as the Kode of Lekë Dukagjini. It represents a series of norms, mores, and injunctions that were passed down by word of mouth for generations and reputedly originally formulated by Lekë Dukagjini, an Albanian prince and companion-in-arms to Albania’s national hero, George Kastriot Skanderbeg (1405-68). Lekë Dukagjini ruled the territories of Pulati, Puka, Mirdita, Lura, and Luma in northern Albania—known today as the region of Dukagjini—until the Ottoman armies seized Albania’s northernmost city of Shkodër in 1479. Throughout the past five to six centuries this corpus of customary law has been referred to as Kanuni i Lekë Dukagjinit, Kanuni i Malsisë (the Code of the Highlands), or Kanuni i maleve (the Code of the Mountains). The “Code” is an inexact term, since Kanun, deriving from the Greek kanon, simultaneously signifies “norm,” “rule,” and “measure.” The Kanun, but most particularly the norm of vengeance, or blood taking, as its standard punitive apparatus, continue to this day to be a subject of historical, sociological, anthropological, and juridical interest involving various theoretical frames of reference from the dominant trends of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to today. The Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini was not the only customary law in Albania. -

Signature 2 To the five Albanian families for opening their homes and sharing their stories with me. 3 Abstract My research explores the dialectical relationship between identity and the conceptualisation/creation of history and heritage in migration by studying a socially excluded group in Greece, that of Albanian families. Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania. -

In this regard, Albania should develop a comprehensive legal framework and establish effective mechanisms to address and overcome gender inequalities, as well as efficient tools and concrete results for prevention of gender based violence, rehabilitation and integration of its victims, and concrete results for advancement of women rights in all sectors of life. This article provides an overview of albanian legislation on gender equality, and relevant reccomandations for intensification of institutional steps to achieve gender equality in Albania. Introduction Gender Equality (equality between men and women) constitutes substantial part of human rights. The Constitution as the fundamental law of ALBANIA, provides for the principle of equality for all citizens as guaranteed by law (Article 18.) Following this universal principle, men and women, being both subjects of the law, are legally treated equally, and have equal rights and obligations, but in real life the equality is not achieved. Gender equality may achieved when as a result of application of the law men and women have same gains and responsibilities. Gender roles impact crucial personal decisions: on education, on career development, on working potentials, on family and on fertility. -

Botuar gjatë gjithë vitit 2020, secili prej tyre përqëndrohet në një festë specifike në një mënyrë të shkurtër e cila do të mundësojë një kuptim më të mirë të tyre, madje edhe për ata që nuk kanë njohuri mbi festat tona pagane shqiptare, por gjithashtu përmbajnë shumë detaje interesante që nxjerrin në pah perspektiva dhe kuptime të reja mbi festat tona pagane. Në të vërtetë, këto prezantime nuk janë prezantime të themeluara tashmë të festave tona antike pagane, por ato janë të mbushura me interpretime që i japin mundësi lexuesit të kuptojë dhe vlersojë ato në nivelet më të larta. Në nivel simbolik, çdo festë duhet të kuptohet si reflektim tokësor i një realiteti më të lartë kozmik. Duke u rrotulluar rreth këtyre festave, paraardhësit tanë ishin në një akordim me ritmin e Natyrës dhe në harmoni me Kozmosin, disiplina hynore e universit. Në nivelin historik, fakti që disa nga këto praktika u vunë re ende në mesin e njerëzve tanë në mes të shekullit XX, dëshmon se ato nuk janë një pjesë e parëndësishme e identitetit tonë. Për më tepër, respektimi i tyre, pavarësisht nga ndarjet e besimeve midis njerëzve tanë, dëshmon identitetin tonë të përbashkët dhe na bën me të vërtetë një popull. The papers are based on remarks delivered at the United Nations Civil Society Briefing, “A Matter of Humanity: The Rescue of Jews in Albania during the Holocaust”, held at United Nations Headquarters on 31 January 2019. Besa: All Will Live as One Family by Ms. Majlinda Myrto, family of rescuers1 Shyqyri Myrto, my father-in-law, didn’t see himself as particularly heroic for sheltering his friends Josef and Keti at his house in a small little town of Albania in 1943. As a citizen of an occupied, poor and freedom-thirsty country, my father-in-law, Shyrqyri was fortunate to witness some of the most humane, civil and noble acts of Albanian people. Resisting the occupation, the Albanians sheltered and shared the war's grievous days with thousands of Jews who chose Albania as a place of refuge during the Holocaust. My father-in-law became friends with Josef Jakoel, a Jewish boy, while they were both students in the same school in Albania before the Second World War. After the Nazi occupation of Albania in September 1943, the situation for Jews in Albania was very fragile. Josef’s family used to live in Vlorë, a town with a lot of Jewish people, but with a new wave of Jews fleeing from Greece and telling terrible stories about the tragedy they had endured there, Josef did not feel safe continuing to live in Vlorë. He contacted my father-in-law and asked for help. And thus, Joseph and his sister Keti came to live in the Myrto’s house. -

His most notable works are researches on family structure and he is primarily known as a codifier of civil law in Montenegro, which he prepared on the basis of a voluminous questionnaire.1 One of his main informants was the leader of the Kuci lineage, at the border of Montenegro and Albania and reputed of Albanian stock. -

European Journal of Sustainable Development (2020), 9, 1, 442-454 ISSN: 2239-5938 Doi: 10.14207/ejsd.2020.v9n1p442 Kanuns in Albania and Bloodfeud According to Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini Gelanda Shkurtaj1 Abstract In societies where it has been known and applied, bloodfeud is described as a possibly outdated and uncivilized mechanism, but often effective to limit violence. Indeed, both in form and substance the phenomenon itself is hard to be perceived and understood by the modern citizen of every country of the world, including Albania, where it is still active in some regions in respect of “Kanun”. In fact, the Albanian term 'Kanun' describes the body of traditional norms/standards and rules governing society in the field of criminal, civil and procedural laws. Its application or merely its existence in moral and legal standards makes a society safer, certainly referring to a society where the power of central authority, namely of the state, either did not exist or lacked. The greatest anthropological dilemma is just there, why does Kanun work in a modern state? In societies where blood feud has been present as a regulatory element of social conflicts it is accepted that its abolition or decline occurred only when another subject (the state), took over to intervene in these conflicting relationships, and to provide the resolution and regulation of social and economic relations through enforcement of rule of law, or the public order. And the question arises by itself: why the Albanian state did not take over the blood feud solution by use of public order? The Kanun does not recognize the state or the state does not recognize the Kanun? Why? It is not easy to get into such historic and social dilemmas, but a modest effort should be made.
