Review by Kersuze Simeon-Jones, University of South Florida The Journal of Haitian Studies, Volume 18 No. 2 © 2012 DÉTOUR D’HAÏTI: A PROLOGUE Roberto Strongman University of California, Santa Barbara In working on this issue, it became clear to me how much contributors, subscribers, and editors of Journal of Haitian Studies rely on the journal as a vehicle for a type of scholarly travel to Haiti, in addition to its academic content. As one of the guest editors for this issue, I often felt the articles whirling about me. I, in the eye of storm, thrown into a spiralist descent in which the /r/ consonance of reading, writing, and revising recomposed into a sort of return. Whether as children of the soil or scholars of the country and its wonders, Haiti has marked our lives and we long to go back to that site of affective and intellectual imprinting. If we are being honest with ourselves, we might confess to the shock and even the disappointments of our recent returns. Everything has changed after the earthquake, the hurricanes, the Aristide administrations, and the Duvaliers. The Haiti of today is not the one we left behind. Our desires are frustrated and circuitous, trapped in the motions of a storm whose counterclockwise motions always bring us back to twelve but which will take us very far from our intended destination. In the tempest of this issue, our travels to Haiti will take us invariably elsewhere. In our theoretical descent towards Haiti, we look out of the airplane window to see a new Haiti, diffuse, its peninsulas stretching out like arms connecting it to other islands and mainlands. Disorientation as a quality of return permeates Caribbean discourse from Cesaire’s Cahier to Glissant’s Le Discours Antillais. In both texts, the idea of retour is unachievable and, at least in Glissant’s case there is a realization of its impossibility and a drive towards an acceptance of errance (wandering) as a mode of living. Far from being a fatalistic and depressing condition, this détour involves a prise-de-conscience on the part of the exiled West Indian that forces him to transform the diasporic locale into a new homeland. Moreover, awareness of the reality of détour forces the West Indian scholar to question origins and empowers him to understand the work of nostalgia that propelled him to seek a return in the first place. Césaire finds an island in the Adriatic with a similar sounding name to his native land: Martinque has its counterpart in Prologue 5 Martinska. Glissant also seriously plays with/in language as he elegantly encodes the elliptical nature of this quest for home in the near homonymy of retour/détour. In the process, Glissant also ends up seeing his homeland of Martinique all over the Antilles. Retour leads to détour. The first section,Défense et Illustration du Vodou, reiterates the important role that language has in our conceptualization of reality and presents to us a number of articles that defend Vodou from its detractors and illustrate its complexity. While most of the second half of the section does fulfill our wish to return to Haiti, the first half curiously takes us to Washington D.C. and more precisely, to the US Library of Congress which is housed there. The history of imperialism in the Western Hemisphere forces us to land on the capital of the US to assure proper recognition to the spiritual practices of Haitians. By ensuring proper spelling of the religion, one important battle has been won. Will lobbying for proper representation in US television and media be next in our future travel plans? After this layover, we resume our flight to Haiti. Flying over the archipelago, we are able to appreciate Haiti’s central location within it, its political, literary and broad cultural import for the lands and peoples of the Antilles. We learn about Montero, a Cuban who lives in Puerto Rico and writes of Haitians in the Dominican Republic. A bit further on, blackness creates a dialogue between Haitian, Cuban, and Puerto Rican female poets. As we continue ahead onto the next section, we consider how a genre that has defined the literary production of Spanish speaking Latin America, Magical Realism, has in fact deep Haitian roots, having been developed there by Cuban Alejo Carpentier, in large part through his exposure Vodou communities. This section investigates the resurgence of this genre in Jamaican, Colombian, and Martinican novels and through this détour we are able to consider the centrality of Haitian cultural history for the multi-lingual literary expression of the entire continent. This is our return. And we would not have been able to arrive here without having experienced several well worth reroutings. We return to Haiti through a play by a Haitian playwright: Le Blue de l’île by Evelyne Trouillot. But this return is fleeting. He allows our feet to briefly touch Haitian ground before whisking us away in a truck to the Dominican Republic, along with some sugar cane cutters en route to the bateyes. As editor of this issue, I would like to present these détours and diversions as strategies that can be deployed to understand Haitian identity not by returning directly to Haiti-as-source-and-origin but by navigating through alternative routes. These redirections might surprise and disappoint us but when these feelings subside, we gain new vistas on 6 Roberto Strongman our desired destination as well as acceptance and knowledge of our own location, an understanding of our past and a measurement of our growth. Building on the theories of Glissant and the poetry of Césaire, I propose that we use these détournements, as regenerative strategies for establishing new bonds with Haiti and our current locations. It is my hope that this issue of JOHS might help us to consider détour as a strategy that can help us regain the sense of newness necessary for us to experience a Haiti that is always in a state of becoming and that constantly forces to move beyond memories. We are ready for take off! As such, this issue is not a collection of conference proceedings, but the written record of a loose association of scholars which constellated around the conference.

First, I just want to get the facts—the day that you were born, where you were born… F: Okay, the day I born is one, three, forty-eight, right? So, I born in Port- au-Prince. But my mother born in Port-a-Prince, but my grandmother born in Jacmel. L: Is that your mother’s mother? F: My grandmother, yeah. But my father born in Port-au-Prince, but, you know, my father’s father born in Léogane. I come from two parent, you know, two pärent—parent or pärent, I don’t know. Because, you know, English is not my language. But in my country they speak Creole. But everybody try to speak French. You’re supposed to go to school to speak French. But my parent don’t have any money to push me very good in big school, and I try to learn by some friend. But, in Haiti, my father, you know, time I got to be about six years old, and my father left my mother, and, you know, my mother can’t help me to push me in school. Okay, I got all my parent, my uncle play drum and be travel lot. He go to St. Thomas, St. Croix, Puerto Rico, and New York and go back to Haiti, St. Vincent and go back to Haiti. And soon I grow up, I say, I want to learn how to play drum.

    Breaking the Waves: Voodoo Magic in the Russian Cultural Ecumene Galina Lindquist, University ofStockholm Introduction Globalization has become one of those contested terms that, having originated in the social sciences, seeped out into popular discourse, contributing to the already considerable tool-kit of late modem reflexivity. Like other such terms that have escaped tight disciplinary boundaries-most notably "culture"-"globalization" has been widely and diversely used (some would say misused), questioned, and contested. According to some, the global world carries with it unprecedented possibilities of a better life for all (Gates 1995). Others say that this point of view is itself a stance of cultural imperialism or that it reflects an utter lack of touch with the reality of inequality, dominance, and exploitation (Bauman 1998). But this reality is itself a global condition. Scholars who look for a theoretical compromise offer a minimnalistic understanding of globalization as a recognition of empirical conditions of "complex connectivity:...a dense network of unexpected interconnections and interdependencies" (Tomlinson 1999:2) that have become a feature of life in the world's most distant nooks and crannies. In this paper, I consider an empirical case of such unexpected, and indeed bizarre, interconnectedness. However, I start not from the idea of the "global," but, instead, from the notion of ecumene as proposed by Hannerz (1996). In his usage, adapted from Kroeber (1945), ecumene, "the entire inhabited world as Greeks then understood it," is an area of "connectedness and reachability,...of interactions, exchanges and related developments" (Hannerz 1996:7). In other words, ecumene is the world conceived as a single place, but, significantly, seen from a certain point of view by a situated cultural subject.

    NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY Dictating Manhood: Refiguring Masculinity in Haitian Literature of Dictatorship, 1968-2010 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Field of French and Francophone Studies By Ara Chi Jung EVANSTON, ILLINOIS March 2018 2 Abstract Dictating Manhood: Refiguring Masculinity in Haitian Literature of Dictatorship, 1968- 2010 explores the literary representations of masculinity under dictatorship. Through the works of Marie Vieux Chauvet, René Depestre, Frankétienne, Georges Castera, Kettly Mars and Dany Laferrière, my dissertation examines the effects of dictatorship on Haitian masculinity and assesses whether extreme oppression can be generative of alternative formulations of masculinity, especially with regard to power. For nearly thirty years, from 1957 to 1986, François and Jean-Claude Duvalier imposed a brutal totalitarian dictatorship that privileged tactics of fear, violence, and terror. Through their instrumentalization of terror and violence, the Duvaliers created a new hegemonic masculinity articulated through the nodes of power and domination. Moreover, Duvalierism developed and promoted a masculine identity which fueled itself through the exclusion and subordination of alternative masculinities, reflecting the autophagic reflex of the dictatorial machine which consumes its own resources in order to power itself. My dissertation probes the structure of Duvalierist masculinity and argues that dictatorial literature not only contests dominant discourses on masculinity, but offers a healing space in which to process the trauma of the dictatorship. 3 Acknowledgements There is a Korean proverb that says, “백지장도 맞들면 낫다.” It is better to lift together, even if it is just a blank sheet of paper.     VODOU AND POLITICAL REFORM IN HAITI: SOME LESSONS FOR THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY JOHN MERRILL The record of attempts by developed nations to promote democracy in the developing world is, at best, uneven. Foreign efforts to build democracy in places as diverse as Somalia and Vietnam have failed, in part because of developed nations' inability to understand traditional culture and religion. These foreigners have bypassed traditional local cultures in their designs for political reform, missing opportunities to lash reforms onto structures familiar to the people of the region. Today, the political potential of religious and cultural institutions remains largely untapped. Haiti, a chronic example of this problem, may provide the international community an opportunity to change its approach to intervention. Through- out Haiti's turbulent history, foreign attempts to influence its political dynamic invariably have been unsuccessful. Some initiatives have succeeded briefly but have failed over the longer term, in part because foreigners or Haitian elites who sought to control the nation's political behavior routinely have misunderstood, ignored, trivialized, or suppressed fundamental tenets of tra- ditional Haitian culture. Policies conceived first in Paris during the colonial era, then at the Vatican, later in Washington during the U.S. Marine occupation of 1915-1934, and most recently by the United Nations, have all tended to provoke internal friction and exacerbate social divisions, making stable gov- ernance and political development even more elusive. But the history of foreign initiatives in Haiti need not necessarily determine the outcome of the current attempt by the international community to con- tribute to Haiti's recovery and rehabilitation.

Etymology and Anthropology So far efforts by researchers to establish the origin of calypso music as a definite song type have been inconclusive. The etymology of the term ‘calypso’ in reference to that song type has proven to be as equally mysterious and speculation remains divided among contributors. This chapter of the study will touch upon literature that speculates about these issues relative to the emergence and development of the song type on the island of Trinidad. At one end of the discussion about origin Lamson (1957, p. 60) has reported the use of French melodic material in calypso, and Raphael De Leon aka The Roaring Lion (1987) has argued in Calypsos from France to Trinidad: 800 Years of History, that the genre was given the pseudonym ‘calypso’ some time in 1900, and derives from French ‘ballade’ created in 1295. He has also publicly asserted that, there is no evidence to support the claim that it is either a variant of African folk songs or that it was invented by African slaves in Trinidad.

    HAITI NEWS ROUNDUP: OCTOBER 6 – 24, 2005 International donors half-way to fulfilling Haiti aid pledge Caribbean Net News Monday, October 24, 2005 BRUSSELS (AFP): International donors have given Haiti some 600 million dollars so far to see it through a transition phase and help its next government, they said in a joint declaration on Friday. The money is half the amount of one billion dollars promised under the interim cooperation framework (CCI) aimed at meeting the priorities of the violence-scarred and impoverished island state. "The meeting in Brussels has allowed us to underline that the engagements undertaken in respect of Haiti are confirmed and will be respected," the joint statement said. The donors also said they would extend the cooperation framework by a year until the end of 2007 to allow the new government, due to take office in February, "the time and the means to continue reforms." A new conference will take place at the end of next year to "mobilise the additional finances necessary for this extension." Haiti and the donors at the two-day conference in Brussels also reaffirmed that the "transfer of power to a new elected government must happen in line with the timeframe set out in the constitution; that is February 7, 2006." At a press conference earlier, Prime Minister Gerard Latortue promised that long-delayed general elections in Haiti, the first since the fall of president Jean Bertrand Aristide, would start in December. "The first round of the presidential and legislative elections will take place in December, probably in the first half of the month," he said.
