OLUFF er en interessegruppe organisert av NAVFs edb-senter for humanistisk forskning ved Universitetet i Bergen. Interessegruppens fulle navn er "Inter- essegruppe for optisk lagringsteknologi i undervisning, forskning og for- midling". Optisk lagringsteknologi er av interesse i edb-faglig arbeid innenfor de huma- nistiske fag, fordi de optiske medienes store lagringskapasitet åpner nye muligheter for anvendelser i forbindelse med lagring, manipulering og presenta- sjon ikke bare av tall og tekst, men også av lyd og bilder. Lyd og bilder er informasjonstyper som i de humanistiske fagene ofte spiller en like vesentlig rolle som tekst. Med tradisjonell datateknologi har det ikke vært praktisk mulig å operere med lyd og bilder i vesentlig omfang. Bruk av b optiske medier blir derfor aktuelt til stadig flere anvendelser etterhvert som tilbudet av produkter innenfor såvel pressede, skrivbare og overskrivbare, ana- loge som digitale medier sker. I de siste årene har NAVFs edb-senter for humanistisk forskning derfor viet optiske lagringsmedier mer og mer oppmerksomhet med tanke på anvendelser innenfor humaniora. Dette vil også forbli et av våre viktigste satsningsområder i årene fremover. OLUFF er et ledd i denne satsningen. Medlemmer av OLUFF får jevnlig tilsendt informasjon om nyheter på området optisk lagringsteknologi, med sær- lig vekt på anvendelser innenfor kulturhistorisk dokumentasjon, språkfag og undervisning. Medlemmene kan også bruke interessegruppen til selv å informere andre medlemmer. All informasjon som sendes hit stilet til OLUFF er å betrakte som tilgjengelig for alle medlemmer. OLUFFs primære målgruppe er universitets- og hsyskolemiljsene i Norge og svrige humanistiske fag- og forskningsinstitusjoner, som arkiv, museer og bibliotek. Det er gledelig i3 se at vi far stadig flere medlemmer, og ikke bare norske - danskene og svenskene er ogsa tydelig interesserte i det vi skriver. Vi mener d registrere at vi star foran et gjennombrudd for optiske lagrings- medier. Det er stor aktivitet innen de forskjellige sektorer som er i ferd med i3 utkrystaliisere seg, enten det gjelder videoplater som ni3 ogsa kan være kilde for digitaliserte bilder, eller digitale plater, som CD-ROM, CD-I og DVI, og endelig slettbare disker. Det er dessuten gledelig i3 merke at det ikke lenger er mediet som ddant som er det viktigste, inorholdet begynner ni3 a innta den fremtredende plass det fortjener. Dette ga seg konkret uttrykk f.eks. pi3 Interactive '89 i Brighton hvor antall ferdige applikasjoner var mangedoblet siden ifjor. Medlemmene er fremdeles flinke til a skrive. Vi oppfordrer med dette andre medlemer som har lyst til i3 komme til orde om i3 melde seg. Bidrag fra skrivelystne medlemmer mottas med takk, dette fordi vi msker ii formidle mest mulig informasjon og kontakt medlemmene imellom. V =:>- -<, b H >L7 r' =, .d .-L .--.c -- Signe Marie Sanne OLUFF 3:89 3 OPINION: Seeing Is Deja Vu By Mark Heyer West Coast Correspondent One has to wonder about conferences based on technology, rather than applications - especially one based on a specific form of one technology, such as Digital Video Interactive (DVI) on CD-ROM. (You remember the High Fidelity 45 rpm Record Conference of 1942. You don't?) The 1989 Miaosoft CD-ROM Conference was so narrowly focused, that even competing CD-ROM technologies such as CD-I were, for the most part, excluded. Pioneer had to "sneak a videodisc player into the exhibits. Even so, there was ample room for confusion. While IBM officiaily embraced DVI, Miaosoft promoted both CD-ROM XA and DVI. Now, CD-ROM XA is based on formats devised by Philips and Sony for CD-I, a direct competitor to DVI. Does this mean that DVI eventuaily wiil be compatible with CD-I, or is XA just an orphan "place holder" untii an ail-new DVI arrives? How can the water get so muddy even when everyone else is kicked out of the pond? Although this show was biiled as "seeing is believing", what we saw in the exhibits was deja vu: videotex without wires ... the same applications from 1983, along with the naive prognostications of videodisc, circa 1980 ... travel and real estate held up as two of the applications just waiting for DVI. The shrimp were large, delicious, and plentiful, but insight into the future of interactive media was non-existent - with the possible exception of an inspiration for the future from Bob Abel (who used videodisc and HyperCard in his presen- tation), whose projection equipment mysteriously malfunctioned during presen- tation. Microsoft, IBM, and Intel didn't so much announce a product as a whole new industry. In doing so, they pointedly ignored or excluded all those who have spent many years and many dollars painfully building the industry as we now know it. Forget Sony, Pioneer, Apple, VAL, Visage, and all the other interactive video vendors. Forget the producers who have lalpriously learned to control this new medium. Forget InfoWindow. Forget the Interactive Video Industry Association and its standards committee. The future will be determined by Microsoft and wiil be incorporated into its operating system for IBM computers - period. MacWeek reported this comment made by Microsoft's Biil Gates to Apple's John Sculley regarding the "thef t" of the graphic interface from Xerox: "John, just because you broke into Xerox's house and stole the TV doesn't mean that I can't break in later and steal the stereo." Is the interactive video industry awaiting a similar fate? Totally missing was any sign of education, training, or adult home entertainment. Fujitsu did show its $3,000+ Towns game computer with CD-ROM, but no hard disk; and NEC showed its wildly successful PC Engine with CD-ROM. Unfortu- nately, the games were high-resolution "murder and assassination training" aimed at boys aged 10-14. The alternative was a game in which pre-pubescent boys could seduce a Japanese rock starlet - classy stuff. In my view, the purveyors of vicarious murder and killing for children should be banished not only from serious confe- rences, but from the face of the earth. We Have Been Here Before Given the distinct videotex nature of the exhibits, I found myself transported back to the IBM/Sears/CBS announcement of Trintex (was it 1983?) - which was going to make the world safe for videotex in every home and business. With these giants in the game (we were told), videotex would be a major industry in only a few years. Many invested their money and careers. Prodigy (son of Trintex minus CBS), is still struggling to get off the ground with the most basic of consumer services - and only for IBM computers. At this Microsoft/IBM/Intel lovefest, attendees clearly did not remember (and certainly were not to be remindedl that IBM made a major commitment to interactive optical disc once before: in 1979 to the aborted DiscoVision videodisc partnership with MCA, the largest entertainment company in the world.     Realising the potential of interactive videodisc for education Peter Hosie Western Australian Department of Education A person making a casual examination of the literature about interactive videodisc (IVD) could be forgiven for concluding that a revolution in education and training has taken place, but as Bosco (1984, p.13) observed, "many of the articles and reports on interactive video which have been produced in the last few years are written from a stance of advocacy". A great number of claims made about IVD use in education are speculative. A good example of such exuberance is this comment by Jonassen (1984, p.2), "there is little doubt that microcomputer-controlled videodisc systems represent the most potentially powerful communication device in the history of instructional communication", or Young and Schlieve (1984, p.4), "Videodisc technology may well revolutionise education in both public and private institutions by the end of the decade". Such rhetoric is similar to that which accompanied the introduction of microcomputers into schools. Interactive videodisc technology has great potential for education but there are some important issues to be addressed. A hybrid medium The term interactive videodisc has different meanings for different people. Rapid development has resulted in a wide range of equipment and techniques complemented by a diversity of applications but there is agreement that "interactive video represents the fusion of video and computer technology" (Parsloe, 1383, p.83). Teh and Perry (1984, p.2) suggested that IVD "represents the synthesis of the instructional capabilities of television and the computer", while De Bloois (1982, p. 33) Hosie 111 suggested "..

Failure of this chip results in complete loss of audio on mono players or loss of one channel of audio on stereo players, depending on which of the two chips in the player has failed. RCA's stock no. for this chip is 149035 and they also gave it a generic industry stock number of CA3215E. A comparison of the circuit diagrams in the Hitachi, Toshiba, and RCA service manuals indicates that those players using a 16-pin Audio FM Demodulator IC all contain the same chip. Some of the companies listed on the CED Player Parts Sources page (try Fox-International first) may still have the part available: http://www.cedmagic.com/home/ced-parts-links.html Although the IC is generally the most likely culprit, it's also important to test the components attached to the IC to verify that the chip itself has failed and not one of the peripheral components.
