Where Have You Been [Hector Fonseca Radio Edit] [03:57] Rihanna's Album News Is Giving Twitter A Reason To Look Forward To 2019. It's been nearly three years since Rihanna released Anti, but there's good news for the singer's fans. On Friday, Dec. 21, Rihanna confirmed her new album will be out in 2019. The singer posted a photo of a new Beauty product, but one fan was only looking for new music. The comment read: "But when is the album dropping Robyn? Can we have a release date for that?" The singer surprised fans by responding, writing back: "2019." In typical RiRi fashion, the answer was frank but also mysterious, as the star offered no further details. Rihanna has kept information about the album under wraps, but her producer Kurt Harrell teased the record on his own Instagram, according to NME. When fans asked how the singer's 9th record, or R9, was coming along. He wrote "R9 is great. R9 is amazing. It's incredible, and that's all I'm going to say." The record would be the singer's first since Anti, which was released in January of 2016. Anti was a critical success and has a major fan following, though, notably, the experimental album did not score a No.1 hit. Fans are still excited for future music, which could end up being a double feature with more likely hits. According to the AP report, an anonymous source hinted that the singer was not pleased with how Anti performed on the charts, and she might have two in the works. "She's currently recording two albums," the unnamed source said. "One full of chart-friendly , and another made up of moody and experimental tracks – and is considering releasing a double disc if she feels the songs won't mesh well on the same album." On Twitter, fans responded to the album news with excitement. Even though the release could still be many months away, several fans hoped Rihanna would drop the album early in the year: Rihanna Confirms New Album for 2019. Nearly three years since her last album, it appears as though Rihanna will release her ninth studio album in 2019. Taking to Instagram, RiRi told a fan that the wait for an ANTI follow-up may soon be over. On Friday (Dec. 21), she responded to a fan who commented on a post. “But when is the album dropping Robyn? Can we have a release date for that?” asked the fan, to which she replied, “2019.” #R9 alert: Rihanna confirmed on Instagram that her new album is dropping in 2019 pic.twitter.com/oSPfEqbhA9 — Rihanna News (@TeamOfRihanna) December 22, 2018. Her vocal producer also teased the album earlier this week. “R9 is great. R9 is amazing. It’s incredible, And that’s all I’m going to say,” he said in response to a fan on social media. RiRi has reportedly been working on two albums, a pop-oriented album and a project. The pop album supposedly features production from top hitmakers including Boi-1da and Skrillex, while reports that she has 500 records for the dancehall disc, which explores her Caribbean roots. “She’s currently recording two albums – one full of chart-friendly songs, and another made up of moody and experimental tracks – and is considering releasing a double disc if she feels the songs won’t mesh well on the same album,” says another source (via NME). R9 will mark the follow-up to 2016’s ANTI , which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and was certified 3x platinum. A2 Media Portfolio. "Music videos are simply an extension of lyrics" – Andrew Goodwin. Rihanna – “Diamonds”: Analysis 1. Artist: Rihanna (Robyn Rihanna Fenty) Track: Diamonds (2012) Directed by: . Label: (Major ) Robyn Rihanna Fenty, known by her stage name Rihanna , is a Barbadian recording artist, actress, and fashion designer. Her work has earned her numerous awards and accolades, including six Grammy Awards, five American Music Awards, 22 Billboard Music Awards, and two BRIT Awards. She has sold over 30 million albums and 120 million singles worldwide, which makes her one of the best-selling artists of all time. “Diamonds” was recorded for her seventh studio album, Unapologetic, and was written by Furler together with its producers, Benny Blanco and StarGate. It was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and sold over three million digital copies in the US. By May 2013, it had sold over 7.5 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling singles of all-time. Rihanna is signed to a major record label, Def Jam Recordings, which is an American record label, focused predominantly on hip hop and urban music, owned by , and operates as a part of The Island Def Jam Music Group. As well as being signed to a major label, she also has a very large online presence: The music video opens with a close-up shot of sparkling diamonds and the first thing I noticed is that the track doesn’t start playing straight away unlike other conventional music videos. It slowly eases into the track with a series of random shots that feature Rihanna rolling up a cigarette filled with diamonds and smoking it. This signifies decadence and to an audience, the video is instantly seen as expensive or of a high budget. The sound in the background is eerie and still, similar to the beginning of a film which also makes the video cinematic, especially because the camera frame is quite panoramic. At 0.39, Rihanna starts singing and the focus is immediately on her as the vocalist. Rather than complying to the “Rule of Thirds”, Rihanna is shot in the middle of the frame with a spotlight behind her – this is iconic for a stage performance when a spotlight is centered on the singer. Many of these shots feature throughout the video to reinforce her vocal presence and to maintain a connection between herself and the lyrics. The pace of the song is quite slow in the beginning so the transaction between shots is created to match it. We are introduced to a wrecked room, with Rihanna central to it, and it’s interesting because the shots are being replayed backwards as if to “repair” the damage to the room. However, there is a juxtaposition because Rihanna is shot in real-time – this makes the audience question what they are seeing. This is a very effective use of FX which is done subtly. We are also introduced to two tattooed hands clasped together, one of which we assume to be Rihanna’s hand on the left because many medium close-up shots feature her and her hands being shown. These close-up shots of Rihanna break up the scenes within the music video so that the attention is always on her. It also makes the song very emotive and engages the audience. As the song reaches the chorus, another scene is introduced which is Rihanna running down a road at night with what appears to be a car’s headlights behind her. This matches the lyrics “I saw the light inside of you / So shine bright tonight”. Because the audience is introduced to these three different scenes, they will automatically think that the song is personal to the singer because of how many times we see Rihanna featured. The chorus picks up as we start to follow Rihanna running down the road – these shots are dynamic because it is being filmed using a hand-held camera but it makes the scene feel very immediate and realistic. There are many shots filmed with some form of light flare towards the camera. This is done purposefully to illustrate the hope that there is a light that will emerge from the darkness. It is also to show that the light is always upon Rihanna – it’s almost heavenly and puts her in a god-like status. We are also redirected back to the wrecked room before the end of the chorus and we see Rihanna stop to look up at the Aurora Borealis (the Northern Lights). I believe that the Northern lights symbolize hope in the darkness. The way that Rihanna is filmed at a slightly low-angle gives her an edge of power and many shots are of her always looking upwards, as if she is looking for something – it makes her seem more childlike and hopeful. The audience are then pulled into another scene by a wide-shot of desert land – again, Rihanna is always central. This imagery mirrors but also contrasts with the darkness of the road and the Northern lights. Where the colouration of the previous shots were cold , it has suddenly changed to warm . A horse is filmed in slow motion running across the open landscape, followed by the lyrics “We’re like diamonds in the sky” which makes the image more beautiful. The location and the way the interaction between the horses are filmed is elegant and dreamlike. In dreams, horses symbolize freedom, power, and sexual energy which is what the director is trying to illustrate to the audience. It makes the music video ambiguous because the horses could be a representative of freedom but they might also represent sexual energy. In this shot, the audience can see the openness of the landscape and how this contrasts with the physicality and beauty of the horse. The lyrics “I saw the light inside of you” matches this shot of the horse looking up. These kind of close-ups make the lyrics very personal and keeps the audience engaged with what they are seeing. Throughout the video, the audience can see elemental representations such as fire, water, earth and air through the environments that Rihanna is placed in. When the two hands are clasped, we see dirt being thrown at them. There is also smoke when Rihanna is smoking her cigarette. And then there is water when we see Rihanna lying in it at the beginning of the video. The screenshots below are of the horses scraping their hooves at the dirt and creating the sense of motion through air and wind. For brief seconds of the video, we also see imagery of burning roses which is another demonstration of fire and also of earth. The music video is saturated in metaphors such as these to extend a message to the audience as they listen to the song. The elements are a creative way of showing different kinds of emotions such as sadness or anger. Towards the last minute of the music video, the song speeds up and the scenes change more frequently. The transition from one scene to another is 1 to 2 seconds towards the end of the track when the lyrics climax. None of the shots focus on one particular scene for more than 10 seconds which means that the edit of this music video is very precise and cut to match the lyrics. The audience are exposed to one more scene which is Rihanna standing central within a riot. Here, the “Rule of Thirds” is applied which is interesting because it can’t necessarily be seen in the other scenes featured throughout the video. This is because the director wants the audience to see what is going on around her and to see Rihanna as an afterthought of the fighting. The close-ups of her face are still enforced so that she is seen as the central character but it doesn’t take away from the heat of the riots. There is a lot of intertextuality within the video and what I found quite interesting was when a man on fire walked in front of Rihanna. I believe that the director chose to shoot this specifically to reference the famous historical image of a Buddhist monk who had set himself on fire during the Vietnam war in protestation for peace. This monk is inspirational to others within the Buddhist religion because they believe in transcending to a higher self. In the context of Rihanna’s music video, the man on fire is deeply personal to her and perhaps symbolic for her own peace and transcending into another self. “Diamonds” is a song about Rihanna’s departure from unhealthy relationships, which were the focus of many of her previous songs. This is interesting when we think about how this affects her music video. Another famous intertextual reference features at the beginning and end of the music video where the audience see Rihanna lying in what appears to be a lake. It mirrors the famous painting, Ophelia , who had been a character in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet . She fell into a river while picking flowers. Unaware of immediate danger, she sings and trapped air in her garments keep her temporarily afloat. She starts to sink because of the weight and eventually drowns. However, Ophelia’s death has been praised as one of the most poetically written death scenes in literature. This can be seen through the final overhead shot of Rihanna. I think that this is a reflection of Rihanna’s music video and the song itself being poetically constructed much like Ophelia’s death. This music video is of a very high budget production and the audience can tell that one of the reasons for this is because she is supported by a high- end record label, Def Jam Recordings. This is not something that I can easily construct because of my limited amount of resources and low budget. However, some of the concepts I find to be very interesting and have inspired my ideas for my own music video. For instance, there is a clear contrast between shots where the colour is either warm or cold: Warm: Cold: I find the use of the mise-en-scene and different kinds of symbolism breathtaking. The recurring image of the clasped hands slowly slipping away from each other is an image that is constantly reinforced, as is the images of Rihanna singing. Each narrative presented in the music video is meant to be interpretative, immersive and powerful so as to create a connection with the audience. The director wants to appeal to the senses which is fascinating because the audience can only see and hear but it’s almost as if you can smell the cigarette smoke or feel the heat of the fire. For most of the music video, Rihanna is either naked or wearing white. This is so as not to take away from her beauty and to also give her innocence, as if she is the victim (or savior) of her own lyrics. We only see her wearing black once and this is when she is running from the headlights – this could be seen as a metaphor of her running away from her unhealthy relationships. These performance based shots are constantly reinforced. Many of these medium close-up shots of Rihanna singing are reinforced and scattered throughout so that the video does not overshadow her musical performance. The colour has been edited so that it is grey and the lighting is low key, yet almost unnaturally bright to create this sense of a studio-based performance. It is a classic and conventional way of demonstrating an artist’s vocal performance in a music video. Extreme close-up shots like this are an effective way of looking at minute details. It brings the focus in on something important so that the audience don’t ignore its significance. This music video is targeted at a very large audience, but especially for the younger generation between the ages of 18 to 25. I think this is because of Rihanna and how she represents herself as a strong, influential young woman. The video would be highly appealing to many of her fans who would have already watched her progress as an artist and listened to many of her previous songs. So, therefore, the video asks for a more dominant reading. Even more so when we consider the fact that it can appeal to anyone and people will be more inclined to buy and listen to the music. Rihanna represents and promotes herself in different ways: We can see that Rihanna is supported by big brands. In the video above, we can evidence that brands like Budweiser help to promote her but also use her as a way of promoting themselves because she has such a huge fan base and she can affect what products we consume. From the video above, it can be seen that Rihanna has a very prominent affect on younger generations. She endorses that to be successful is to just be yourself. This is a strong message to project and one that many young people can look up to in order to become successful in life. Album artwork – Front Cover. Album artwork – Back Cover. The images above are taken from her recent album, Unapologetic , which is where her song “Diamonds” is also featured. The front cover is simplistic and stylized – it has been made to look like someone has scribbled all over the cover with pen because the font looks “handwritten”. Rihanna has been photographed nude and is in the central background of the cover (once again, the primary focus is on her). Here, she is highly sexual and her image is being used to sell the album which complies with the conventions of the R&B genre. In contrast, the back cover is also an image of her but in black and white. Rather than being completely nude, she also has a “punk” looking jacket on. What’s interesting is that the titles of each song on the album appears to have been handwritten onto the page. This is to give the appearance that the album has been written on by Rihanna herself – this would make someone more likely to buy it because it makes it more personal. This theme is apparent when looking at the CD artwork as well. But the image depicted on the CD is a cartoon of part of a woman’s face which juxtaposes the photographs of Rihanna on the album cover. Diamond World Tour Poster. A cyclical image that we often associate with Rihanna is her “R” logo. It comes in varying forms, depending on what she is trying to promote. The poster shown above is the recent artwork of her Diamond World Tour poster that is currently being advertised. It very much mirrors her album artwork but it is more provocative in that we see a lot more of Rihanna’s skin. I think that the way she represents herself outside her Diamonds music video is much more sexualized and focuses more on what she looks like rather than the music itself. This is very different when compared to, for example, an independent artist.
