More than a “textbook” or a “handbook,” this text is an open access, digitally published, ongoing, annotatable collection of Critical Theory explorations, brought to you in a neat little package by past students. Featuring mini-essays, blog posts, and cultural analyses selected and edited by students, The Student Theorist provides fresh and personal insights into pertinent theories that can all too often end up explicated in dried- up and complex ways. It includes introductions to concepts such as Sigmund Freud’s “The Uncanny” and Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, as well as essays on topics ranging from Spongebob’s Oedipus Complex to ecotheoretical critiques of Earth Jam. The purpose of this handbook is to provide accessible introductions to theoretically robust debates and concepts, while also revealing the enduring and urgent relevance of theory in our world. Throughout this course, we explored the following questions: What is the purpose of literary studies? What do English majors DO and why? Why are we called English majors instead of Literature majors? Theory allows us to begin to answer those questions in compelling and 3 ABBY GOODE unexpected ways. In this course, we explore theories applicable to contemporary texts and situations. Critical theory is useful in many different types of media, such as texts, films, ads, and even events, which many of us showed through our Critical Theory in the Community analyses. The goal of the course at large is to create theory- fluent writers and this handbook begins to show how that can be achieved. At times, the content addressed in this course seemed inaccessible. Theories that challenged our previously- unnoticed, everyday thoughts and actions often made us uncomfortable and confused. This handbook is intended to help future students through this discomfort by celebrating and explaining theory in a cohesive and comprehensible manner. Joining the ride with previous classes will bring some perspective to your own journey through critical theory. Although this handbook was created by college students in a college classroom, the blog posts aim to work through these complicated theories in a way that is accessible to any person looking to learn something new.

May 15, 2020 Created by (doja cat & lil uzi vert) (bruno mars & eminem) (taylor swift & rihanna) Dadaism On each of our pages, you will find a “guess the song” section. This was inspired by the Cut-Up technique, an aleatory literary technique where a written text is cut up word-by-word and then completely rearranged, resulting in a new text. This technique can be traced back to the Dadaists in the 1920s, a group of avant-garde artists located primarily in Europe. Since then, the Cut-Up technique has been used in a variety of other contexts. On our pages, we have taken a popular song from each artist, then used the Dadaist cut-up technique to scramble the lyrics and create a new text. We chose to do this to pay homage to and remind us of the avant-garde artists and the history of avant-garde zines. So, if you would like, take a shot at guessing the songs. The answers are found on the final page. We hope you enjoy our little game and, in the process, are reminded of how all zines began. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Putting together this thesis has been something of a lifelong endeavor. In essence, it is the blueprint by which I intend to launch my career as a recording artist and songwriter. I could have never imagined combining my greatest passions – academia and pop culture – without the incredible guidance of Dr. Rachel Romero. The critical curiosity she has sparked within me, class after class, has completely changed the way I approach the world. Throughout my tenure at Texas State, Dr. Romero has been a gifted educator, wise mentor, and ultimately a genuine friend. I’d like to thank her for her unyielding support throughout this process, and her incredible impact on my life.

THE DERAILMENT OF FEMINISM: A QUALITATIVE STUDY OF GIRL EMPOWERMENT AND THE POPULAR MUSIC ARTIST A Thesis by Jodie Christine Simon Master of Arts, Wichita State University, 2010 Bachelor of Arts. Wichita State University, 2006 Submitted to the Department of Liberal Studies and the faculty of the Graduate School of Wichita State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts July 2012 @ Copyright 2012 by Jodie Christine Simon All Rights Reserved THE DERAILMENT OF FEMINISM: A QUALITATIVE STUDY OF GIRL EMPOWERMENT AND THE POPULAR MUSIC ARTIST The following faculty members have examined the final copy of this thesis for form and content, and recommend that it be accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Masters of Arts with a major in Liberal Studies. __________________________________________________________ Jodie Hertzog, Committee Chair __________________________________________________________ Jeff Jarman, Committee Member __________________________________________________________ Chuck Koeber, Committee Member iii DEDICATION To my husband, my mother, and my children iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my adviser, Dr. Jodie Hertzog, for her patient and insightful advice and support. A mentor in every sense of the word, Jodie Hertzog embodies the very nature of adviser; her council was very much appreciated through the course of my study. v ABSTRACT “Girl Power!” is a message that parents raising young women in today’s media- saturated society should be able to turn to with a modicum of relief from the relentlessly harmful messages normally found within popular music. But what happens when we turn a critical eye toward the messages cloaked within this supposedly feminist missive? A close examination of popular music associated with girl empowerment reveals that many of the messages found within these lyrics are frighteningly just as damaging as the misogynistic, violent, and explicitly sexual ones found in the usual fare of top 100 Hits.

Book Reviews Miller’s treatment of Pynchon alongside Cervantes, and his argument for the similarities between the two, effectively argues against the trajectory of historical periodicity, whereby communities in fiction become more precari- ous and fractured over time. In so doing, Miller demonstrates the problem of fixed, inflexible definitions of period names and styles that inhibit fluid- ity and nuance. This is perhaps the strongest claim that Miller makes in his book. Drawing on texts from the seventeenth to the mid-twentieth centuries, Miller convincingly argues that communities in fiction have been consist- ently represented as complex and fractured. Jana Smith Elford Hilary McD. Beckles and Heather D. Russell, eds. Rihanna: Barbados World-Gurl in Global Popular Culture. Kingston: U of the West Indies P, 2015. Pp. v, 211. US$32. Hilary McD. Beckles and Heather D. Russell cite Rihanna’s “uncompromising articulations of national belonging coupled with her unprecedented transna- tional success” (she is arguably the most commercially successful Caribbean musical artist in history) as the impetus for their edited volume focused on the Barbadian performer (2). The volume’s eight chapters approach Rihanna’s artistry and persona from a variety of disciplinary perspectives including his- tory, literature, political science, and cultural, feminist, and gender studies in order to redress the ways in which “black diaspora subjects and their art have historically been (mis)appropriated and (mis)represented by others” (Beckles and Russell 2). Keenly aware that Rihanna’s defiant sexuality is subject to critiques from local and global audiences, the volume aims to “decentre and destabilize the primacy, and thus potency, of the Euro-American gaze, pos- iting instead considerations of the Caribbean artist and her oeuvre from a Caribbean postcolonial critical/theoretical corpus” (4).
