Since getting these when they were first released I hadnâ​t bought any of their subsequent albums. Did I go off them? Bit like me going off The Beatles when they became so populat and my sister joined the fan club? Not sure. I guess my very broad musical tastes krpt me away and being plied by a pal who was really into the Madchester music scene. Yes, but not by the two aforementioned tracks. I will give it another listen but found the supporting tracks did not have the same level of brilliance as those on Parachutes and Sudden Rush Also Iâ​ve upgraded my sound system and can now really hear into the way tracks are recorded mixed and mastered. A lot of mainstream pop music from the 80s and 90s and later have the oddest sound when being played on a very revealing setup. Not that they were recorded, mixed and mastered for the likes of my setup - rather to sound good on radio and lesser systems which I accept is the vast majority of the listening public. The story of Chris Martin writing in schoolboy German to the members of Kraftwerk for permission to use the melody of Computer Love for the Letâ​s Talk track and the subsequent promo video for it are memorable as is the track itself - in my opinion the best on this album. Well these colours and blocks are a graphical representation of the Baudot code, an early form of telegraph communication using a series of ones and zeros to communicate. The album is split up into 6 tracks for X and 6 tracks for Y, possibly separating the tracks because of a varied style and there's a bonus track. I am a very casual fan of the band's music and after a while of deliberating decided to purchase this album 3 years ago. My favourite Coldplay song is Fix you and that was my main reason for buying this album. I wasn't sure how the rest of the album would sound but I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed the album. The album begins with Square one and is followed by What if; the first is a mid-tempo track with a decent chorus and the second is a very piano driven track with a slower overall sound. White shadows picks up the pace with a steady beat and is much more catchy sounding. Fix you is my favourite and surely the strongest on this record too. An incredible piece of emotional piano pop music and I love the message with the singer reaching out to someone he loves saying that he'll fix them. It's a powerful ballad. Talk is a good pop track with a very cool guitar riff that is a mirror of the chorus melody. It's less reliant on piano and much more guitar powered. I like how the guitar works with Martin's vocals at the chorus, I think it's smart. Speed of sound is another single with a good beat and impressive high pitched vocals throughout with a pretty catchy chorus. The hardest part was another single and it's 1 of the best here. Swallowed in the sea starts off quite slowly but builds to a great rhythm and is 1 of the better tracks and a pretty thoughtful song. Twisted logic sounds a bit different to the rest with its droning bass sound but at the same time still fits in well and ends the main album nicely. The song was originally planned for Johnny Cash to do a duet with Martin but Cash died before he was able to do so. The song is quite simple in sound but is very emotional and has a deep message for a loved one. It's a powerful, moving acoustic song quite diverse from the rest of the album and it's definitely one of the best. If you are a more casual fan like me and you've heard the singles but aren't sure whether to buy the album then I would certainly recommend you do. Even if you're a more long term fan I don't see how this album could disappoint although I am biased because I haven't got any of their other albums but I do plan on purchasing more after how impressive this was. One of them rare albums that has great tunes from start to finish. Definitely one of my all time favourites and not stored in a cardboard sleeve, a bonus. Got to admit the only thing that drove me to buy this was the track "Princess Of China" because I like good girl gone bad Rihanna I also like anything vaguely associated with China or Japan. This was inspired by the Cut-Up technique, an aleatory literary technique where a written text is cut up word-by-word and then completely rearranged, resulting in a new text. This technique can be traced back to the Dadaists in the 1920s, a group of avant-garde artists located primarily in Europe. Since then, the Cut-Up technique has been used in a variety of other contexts. On our pages, we have taken a popular song from each artist, then used the Dadaist cut-up technique to scramble the lyrics and create a new text. We chose to do this to pay homage to and remind us of the avant-garde artists and the history of avant-garde zines. So, if you would like, take a shot at guessing the songs. But what happens when we turn a critical eye toward the messages cloaked within this supposedly feminist missive? A close examination of popular music associated with girl empowerment reveals that many of the messages found within these lyrics are frighteningly just as damaging as the misogynistic, violent, and explicitly sexual ones found in the usual fare of top 100 Hits.

    Book Reviews Miller’s treatment of Pynchon alongside Cervantes, and his argument for the similarities between the two, effectively argues against the trajectory of historical periodicity, whereby communities in fiction become more precari- ous and fractured over time. In so doing, Miller demonstrates the problem of fixed, inflexible definitions of period names and styles that inhibit fluid- ity and nuance. This is perhaps the strongest claim that Miller makes in his book. Drawing on texts from the seventeenth to the mid-twentieth centuries, Miller convincingly argues that communities in fiction have been consist- ently represented as complex and fractured. Beckles and Heather D. Russell cite Rihanna’s “uncompromising articulations of national belonging coupled with her unprecedented transna- tional success” (she is arguably the most commercially successful Caribbean musical artist in history) as the impetus for their edited volume focused on the Barbadian performer (2). The volume’s eight chapters approach Rihanna’s artistry and persona from a variety of disciplinary perspectives including his- tory, literature, political science, and cultural, feminist, and gender studies in order to redress the ways in which “black diaspora subjects and their art have historically been (mis)appropriated and (mis)represented by others” (Beckles and Russell 2). Keenly aware that Rihanna’s defiant sexuality is subject to critiques from local and global audiences, the volume aims to “decentre and destabilize the primacy, and thus potency, of the Euro-American gaze, pos- iting instead considerations of the Caribbean artist and her oeuvre from a Caribbean postcolonial critical/theoretical corpus” (4).
