    Music Jos Schuring From Louis Andriessen, Ton Koopman, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Within Temptation and DJ Tiësto to Frans Brüggen or Han Bennink and Wouter Hamel: Dutch music of every conceivable genre is well represented beyond the country’s borders. The current music culture in the Netherlands is a result of a long history coupled with the recent past in which the differences between conventional ideas and contemporary styles fight it out in an exciting battle. From the very beginning the fighters for the old and new music have joined forces to resist the mainstream. Both camps challenged the nineteenth-century-style structure of musical society, with its insatiable appetite for the symphonies of Beethoven and Mahler. The end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s saw the emergence of Reinbert de Leeuw’s Schönberg Ensemble, the New Ensemble under Ed Spanjaard, Frans Brüggen’s Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra under Ton Koopman. Together with countless other ensembles, they have enriched the musical life of the Netherlands. In the New YorkTimes the Instant Composers Pool, often called the ICP Orchestra, was recently hailed as the continuing flagship of the Dutch avant-garde. In the meantime, numerous current or former ICP musicians have achieved international success on their own merits. Saxophonist Ab Baars and trombonist Wolter Wierbos tour outside the Netherlands on a regular basis. And the young Wouter Hamel and British-Dutch Benjamin Herman have also achieved considerable success abroad. Dutch pop music is just too good to be confined to its home in the Netherlands.

The new Plan is only the College’s second. The first, approved in 2008, identified an acute shortage of space as a major strategic problem. Fuelled in part by large numbers of alumni donations, Cohen Quadrangle – opened in 2017 and now the recipient of the first prize in the Higher Education and Research category at the World Architecture Festival – splendidly filled that gap. The new plan uses Cohen Quad as a springboard for further achievement in four major dimensions: diversity, excellence, stewardship (including sustainability) and community. Prioritised by Exeter’s Strategy Group, projects identified by Governing Body in June will implement these themes in five major areas of activity: the undergraduate experience; the postgraduate experience; Fellows, staff and governance; connections within and beyond College; and resources & stewardship (including buildings and infrastructure).

    Kasper Jansen A Cosmopolitan between Earth and Heaven Pierre Audi at the Netherlands Opera and the Holland Festival Boekmanstudies 1 - A Cosmopolitan in Amsterdam The unlikely appointment of Pierre Audi Looking like an exotic wild creature with his large, dark eyes darting apprehensively around, Pierre Audi arrived to take up his appointment as artistic director of the Netherlands Opera on 17 June 1988. As he entered a small room in the basement of Amsterdam’s Muziektheater, the windowless space suddenly seemed to become a cage, imprisoning him. Audi had travelled from London that day. He had seen nothing of Amsterdam, apart from the Muziektheater. One of the world’s greatest music stages, it frightened him. He had never directed a real opera, only contemporary music theatre. He thought: “How on earth am I ever going to direct in this huge black hole?” Audi’s small stature in an oversized black suit made him look even younger than his 31 years. He made the round of introductions to all the strangers present in the room, shaking hands with each. He answered some questions, promised to deliver an ambitious artistic package within budget, and said that he wanted to direct operas himself when the occasion allowed. He then posed for a few photos, and after 15 minutes Pierre Audi was gone again, on his way back to London. He had escaped Amsterdam already. With his free, independent spirit, he seemed not the type to form any bonds. “A real cosmopolitan,” sighed Bernard Sarphati, the chairman of the Netherlands Opera. And then, as a validation of Audi’s appointment, he added: “But then, Amsterdam is a cosmopolitan city.” The appointment of Pierre Audi as the successor to previous director Jan van Vlijmen was a total surprise.

    PIERRE AUDI ARTISTIC DIRECTOR A critically acclaimed director and artistic director, Pierre Audi was appointed Artistic Director of Park Avenue Armory in 2015. He also serves as the Artistic Director of the Dutch National Opera, a position he will hold until September 2018, when he will take over as General Director of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Audi’s career trajectory has been characterized by both reinventing the classics and supporting groundbreaking new work. He founded the Almeida Theatre which, under his direction, established an international reputation for producing provocative new plays and musical commissions, introducing a vast number of then-living composers to the U.K., from John Cage, to Alfred Schnittke and Arvo Pärt, and mounting for the first time in the U.K. works by Robert Wilson, Deborah Warner, Simon McBurney, and Robert Lepage, among others. Appointed as head of the Dutch National Opera in 1988, Audi was the youngest opera leader at the time and today is the longest serving in the world. He helped transform the company into one of the most cutting-edge and successful in Europe, with a commitment to commissioning new work and building new audiences for the art form. Among the numerous critically acclaimed performances are his staging of Wagner’s Ring cycle, in which the theater was completely remade to set the orchestra in the middle of the stage, his now-classic cycle of three Monteverdi operas, Vespers, and madrigals, some of which were subsequently presented at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Sydney Festival, and the Los Angeles Opera.
