POSTAL HISTORY HANDBOOK of the HOLYLAND (Ottoman Palestine – Mandatory Palestine – Israel – Territories – Palestinian Authority – Related Near-East Regions) POSTAL HISTORY HANDBOOK OF THE HOLYLAND (Ottoman Palestine – Mandatory Palestine – Israel – Territories – Palestinian Authority – Related Near-East Regions) Version 0.001 (29-08-2018) Prepared by Alex Ben-Arieh, FRPSL | [email protected] (no copyrights – distribute freely) --- The document covers key dates accumulated so far, presently un-illustrated. The dates were accumulated as needed during cataloguing work, a smattering of different periods. In time the document will also include a comprehensive records of rates and routes The sources used are both printed publications as well as online sources. Please keep in mind that the content of the referred-to online sources may change over time as a result of edits, and that what once appeared may have since been removed – or additional information has since been added. - Where only a month is known this is the “date” displayed for a certain event; likewise for a year - The devil is in the details: many seemingly unneeded dates are covered because these can give circumstantial context to postal covers. - This is a non-political document: dates are not left out/events not ignored deliberately; any ‘omission’ is simply an item I have not yet had the chance to record here. - In several instances the phrasing of historical events have been copied wholesale from the source in order to just have the event recorded in this chronology – this document was prepared ‘on the fly’ during cataloguing work. - I’m aware that the Zionism-Israel.com timeline is not entirely accurate: I used it to fill in gaps in the chronology and little by little I’m trying to confirm their dates (and events) using other sources. Some abbreviations used: FB - John Firebrace: British Empire Campaigns and Occupations in the Near East, 1914-1924 – A Postal History, 1991 PO - Post Office OAS - On Active Service (military mail) HBAPS - Edward Proud: History of the British Army Postal Service TAS - Yacov Tsachor / Tel Aviv Stamps (auction catalogue/lot#) IFPL - “Israel Foreign Postal Links” by Chaim Shamir & Marvin Siegel, 1991 Aloni - Zvi Aloni: Postal Administrations of British Mandate, Minhelet Ha’am and Israel, 2015 / Chapters in the Aerophilately of Eretz Israel, 2013 (where referenced as “Aloni Airmail”) TPHTPI - (The Postal History of the Transition Period in Israel, 1948): Vol II Part I “Jerusalem and Safad Postal Services” by Zvi Shimony, Yeremiyahu Rimon & Itamar Karpovsky 10 July 1852 The French Postal ship Tancrede arrived in Jaffa and on that same day the first post office was opened by postal agent named Antonie Louis Santelli, who also initiated and founded a branch of the French post in Jerusalem. Anti-Zionism and Antisemitism Cosmopolitan Reflections David Hirsh Department of Sociology, Goldsmiths, University of London, New Cross, London SE14 6NW, UK The Working Papers Series is intended to initiate discussion, debate and discourse on a wide variety of issues as it pertains to the analysis of antisemitism, and to further the study of this subject matter. Please feel free to submit papers to the ISGAP working paper series. Contact the ISGAP Coordinator or the Editor of the Working Paper Series, Charles Asher Small. Working Paper Hirsh 2007 ISSN: 1940-610X © Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy ISGAP 165 East 56th Street, Second floor New York, NY 10022 United States Office Telephone: 212-230-1840 www.isgap.org ABSTRACT This paper aims to disentangle the difficult relationship between anti-Zionism and antisemitism. On one side, antisemitism appears as a pressing contemporary problem, intimately connected to an intensification of hostility to Israel. Opposing accounts downplay the fact of antisemitism and tend to treat the charge as an instrumental attempt to de-legitimize criticism of Israel. I address the central relationship both conceptually and through a number of empirical case studies which lie in the disputed territory between criticism and demonization. The paper focuses on current debates in the British public sphere and in particular on the campaign to boycott Israeli academia. Sociologically the paper seeks to develop a cosmopolitan framework to confront the methodological nationalism of both Zionism and anti-Zionism. It does not assume that exaggerated hostility to Israel is caused by underlying antisemitism but it explores the possibility that antisemitism may be an effect even of some antiracist forms of anti- Zionism.

Just beyond the wall lies the neighborhood of al-Ram, now severed from East Jerusalem. The Israeli settlement of Pisgat Ze’ev lies beyond in East Jerusalem. This publication takes its point of departure from Fazal Sheikh’s Memory Trace, the first of his three-volume photographic proj- ect on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Published in the spring of 2015, The Erasure Trilogy is divided into three separate vol- umes—Memory Trace, Desert Bloom, and Independence/Nakba. The project seeks to explore the legacies of the Arab–Israeli War of 1948, which resulted in the dispossession and displacement of three quarters of the Palestinian population, in the establishment of the State of Israel, and in the reconfiguration of territorial borders across the region. Elements of these volumes have been exhibited at the Slought Foundation in Philadelphia, Storefront for Art and Architecture, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York, and will now be presented at the Al-Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art in East Jerusalem, and the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center in Ramallah. In addition, historical documents and materials related to the history of Al-’Araqīb, a Bedouin village that has been destroyed and rebuilt more than one hundred times in the ongoing “battle over the Negev,” first presented at the Slought Foundation, will be shown at Al-Ma’mal.

CarolAnn Garratt , Flight log - visit to Israel 12.10.2011 – 16.10.2011 AOPA meeting in Haifa LLHA – front row left to right, Yigal, Dror, Yaron Efrat AOPA Israel Chairman 10/25/2011 What a day! When I arrived in Haifa, almost two weeks ago, Yigal, who took care of me, helped me with the clearances to fly to Israel and organized some of the meetings, also asked if I would like to fly to Masada. I’d read about Masada in AOPA Pilot Magazine about a year ago. I actually looked for the magazine and article before leaving home, thinking that I could contact the person in the article and fly there. But, I couldn’t find the article and then I learned that I couldn’t fly alone in Israel, so that was as far as I went. When Yigal asked me, I said yes, but it was not possible. He said with a smile, “Leave it to Yigal.” As with everything else, he made it happen! Today I flew to and landed at the lowest airstrip on Earth, 1240 feet below sea level. Not only that, but I received a guided tour and learned the history of Masada, the fort built by Herod on top of a mountain. It was fascinating. The only unfortunate part was that the weather had deteriorated a little and it was hazy. I flew there with Dror, who met me at Haifa airport when I first landed. At Mesada, we were hosted by Haviv who I had met at the presentations in Tel Aviv.
