D.) © YOUNA KIM 2002 ABSTRACT This thesis is about how television intersects with the everyday lives of women in transitional Korea, and how the experience of television is further implicated in the formation and transformation of identities. Within the larger socio-historical context of Korean modernity, it explores how_women deal with social change and make sense of their lives and identities with the cultural experience of television in everyday life, mediated by generation and class. This empirical work overall demonstrates the reflexive workings of popular television culture in its multifold manifestations. It reveals how critical ordinary women are in their engagement with television and how reflexivity actually operates in the variegated settings of their everyday lives. The thesis therefore argues for reflexivity at work: Reflexivity is constitutive of the experience of modem television. The practice of reflexivity is a defining characteristic of the experience of television, and television culture today has become a critical condition for reflexivity. Specifically, the thesis emphasizes the social dynamics of different forms of reflexivity with which to organize the project of self-identity, and the significant role of television as a resource for reflexivity. Reflexivity is organized around the axis of generation oriented toward different directions, which are the tradition-directed, the inner-directed, and the other-directed. The dialectical nature of the reflexivities of each generation is a push-and-pull of different tendencies towards modernity. Tradition in everyday life is now under threat, beginning to dissolve by the experience of modernity. London, July 2002 7 Chapter 1 Women, Television, and Everyday Life This thesis is about how television intersects with the everyday lives of women in transitional Korea, and how the experience of television is further implicated in the formation and transformation of identities. This study initially evolved out of my observation and personal reflections on the historically unprecedented rate of divorce and the social fear about the dissolution of the traditional family system with the coming of modernity.1 The Korean divorce rate is rising rapidly, although it is still low as compared with Western countries. It has increased from 5.8% in 1980, to 11.1 % in 1990, 16.8% in 1995 (KWDI, 1998), and today, one out of three married couples is divorcing (KBS News, July 1, 1999). It is a dramatic indicator of the crisis of identity, both individual and social, in the push-and-pull of different influences of modernity. The identity crisis basically posed a question: How do people deal with the continuous, unsettling social transitions around them, and what kind of role does media play in this process? This question consequently arising from the social conditions of modernity prompted me to explore in detail women's changing lives and identities in relation to the impact of the most popular media culture in everyday life - television.2 Specifically, how do Korean women perceive, interpret, and use television in the course of everyday life, in the creation of identity? Does television intersect with imagining different lives and identities for women? What are the distinctive features of women's relationships to television? Are women's relationships to television significantly influenced by their age and class position? I am primarily concerned with the ways in which different generations of women relate to television, however, the dimension of class will also be considered to see if cultural patterns of television experience are determined by class differences.3 Overall, the objective of this study is to understand how Korean women deal with social change and make sense of their everyday lives and identities with the cultural experience of television mediated by generation and class. Women's experience of television in everyday life cannot be separated from its links to the larger socio-historical context in which television is received and understood. Importantly, this study therefore approaches women, 8 television, and everyday life in the historically-specific social conditions of Korean modernity. For the framework of this study I mainly refer to Western theoretical and empirical work on women as audiences. This is because, in examining relationships between women and media culture, Korean feminist television studies have been predominantly concerned with the issues of women as "representations" and women as "creators", but have not approached women as "audiences". Despite the fact that Koreans spend 4/5 of their leisure time on television consumption (KBI, 1996), hence, television is an integral part of everyday leisure life, any exploratory research on what people do with television is largely absent.

The method adopted is two-fold: 1) an examination of the ways in which Stevens transformed Romantic and Symbolist poetic tradition, incorporating (often in a significantly modified form) concepts developed by Valéry, Mauron, Focillon, Nietzsche, Whitehead, and Planck; 2) an assessment of the consequences of that incorporation for a critical understanding of poems written during each stage of his career. The thesis will trace the process by which concept becomes figure in the making of the poem, and is then reconceptualized in the act of reading.

    FILMING FEMINIST FRONTIERS/FRONTIER FEMINISMS 1979-1993 KATHLEEN CUMMINS A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN WOMEN’S, FEMINIST AND GENDER STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO November 2014 © Kathleen Cummins, 2014 ii ABSTRACT Filming Feminist Frontiers/Frontier Feminisms is a transnational qualitative study that examines ten landmark feature films directed by women that re-imagined the frontiers of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S through a feminist lens. As feminist feature films they countered Eurocentric and masculinist myths of white settlement and expansionism in the grand narrative tradition. Produced between 1979 and 1993, these films reflect many of the key debates that animated feminist scholarship between 1970 and 1990. Frontier spaces are re-imagined as places where feminist identities can be forged outside white settler patriarchal constructs, debunking frontier myths embedded in frontier historiography and the Western. A central way these filmmakers debunked frontier myths was to push the boundaries of what constitutes a frontier. Despite their common aim to demystify dominant frontier myths, these films do not collectively form a coherent or monolithic feminist revisionist frontier. Instead, this body of work reflects and is marked by difference, although not in regard to nation or time periods. Rather the differences that emerge across this body of work reflect the differences within feminism itself. As a means of understanding these differences, this study examines these films through four central themes that were at the centre of feminist debates during the 1970s, 80s, and 90s.

    IN FOCUS: The “C” and “M” in SCMS The Big Picture: On the Expansive- ness of Cinema and Media Studies by LUCAS HILDERBRAND, editor n the past couple of decades, scholars in cinema and media studies have importantly, if incompletely, expanded the range of media, objects, methods, and culturally situated perspectives—including international ones—that we study. Institutionally, this has been epitomized by the addition of “and Media” to the organization’s name I(from SCS to SCMS) in 2002 and by the more recent proliferation of Scholarly Interest Groups to thirty-four SIGs by 2017 (a growth that has raised concerns that there are now “too many” SIGs). But as the discipline and organization grow, have we simply become atomized into a plurality of smaller conversations? Do we still share unifying projects, sets of questions, and concerns? Would we even want to? How do we foster supportive intellectual communities that are essential for legitimating long-marginalized areas of study while not simply splintering into separate subfi elds that do not actually engage in dialogue or cohere? Does our work make an impact beyond our discipline? These questions developed for me out of conversations in recent years among a variety of colleagues. Generational questions emerge as well. As the discipline “ma- tures,” how do we understand its evolution? Do we still need to teach apparatus theory, for instance—and, if so, is it as intellectual history or as active theory? The recent expansion of new graduate programs has literally redrawn the map of schools of thought. The tenure-track academic job market, however, has not kept pace.

Janet McCabe and Kim Akass Introduction Our paper concentrates on the feminist inquiry into television. Never monolithic, the wide-ranging and complicated knowledges produced by feminism since the seventies is quite remarkable, reliant upon diverse aims, separate objectives and different intellectual concerns. This contribution charts feminist research while thinking about how the socio-historical, political and cultural contexts shaped what was said and how it was said. Conceived in the politically radical context of the women‟s liberation movement, and at an historical time in North America and Europe where women were lobbying for changes in legislation, initial feminist interest in television was, in the words of Charlotte Brunsdon, Julie D‟Acci and Lynn Spigel, a call „to action growing out of a deep conviction that women‟s oppression was very much related to mass media representations and that change was not only urgent, but possible.‟1 Raising awareness about how patriarchal ideology excluded, silenced and oppressed women would indelibly mark thinking about the processes and practices that produced ideas about what it means to be a woman in culture. Shaping scholarship was the guiding principle that gender is nothing more than a socially constructed phenomenon, rather than some immutable state of being conditioned by biology.
