City of SAN MARCOS | 360 | Winter/Spring 20 17 3 by shopping and dining locally this holiday season

With the holiday season upon us, the City of San Marcos reminds residents to stay close to home when shopping and dining. Spending locally is not only convenient for residents; San Marcos businesses benefit too. Sales fortify the strength of local businesses, shoppers save on gas and time, and the local economy is enhanced. “Shopping and dining locally is a win-win-win for our community,” said Economic Development Manager Tess Radmill. When transactions are made locally, sales tax revenue is generated to support city services such as law enforcement, fire protection, parks and recreation, and street maintenance. When dollars are spent locally, residents are directly contributing to their community’s quality of life. “When residents shop locally, it saves time and resources, helps build the backbone of our local economy and ensures that the city continues to deliver top-notch programs, projects and services to its residents,” said Radmill. 8 City of SAN MARCOS | 360 | Winter/Spring 20 17 Help protect citrus from serious threat

A deadly citrus disease called Huanglongbing (HLB) has recently been found in Southern California and all homeowners in San Marcos are being asked to help stop the spread of the disease, which has been called a death sentence for California citrus. Once citrus trees are infected with HLB, they will die, threatening not only the ability of homeowners to grow citrus in their backyards, but the California citrus economy. One of the best ways to prevent HLB from taking hold in San Diego County is to stop the Asian citrus psyllid, a pest that can transmit the disease from tree to tree as it feeds.
