May 12, 1922. p. 5. This news article gives detailed information about the funeral services for Allen once his body had been returned from France after the war. It tells of the funeral cortege from his N. Main St. home to the cemetery and names those participating. It relates that Allen was a National Guard soldier who originally joined the 74th Reg. in Buffalo and was later transferred to the 108th Reg. before going over to France in May 1918. He was killed by the concussion from a bursting German mortar round in Aug. 1918 and was originally buried in Abeele, Belgium. Huber Willer, who helped rebury Allen in Canandaigua had been part of the original burial party that buried him in Belgium. He is referred to simply as Arthur Allen in the article. “War Hero is Buried.” Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. May 10, 1922. p. 17. News article recounts the events of Alen’s burial in Canandaigua with the same facts as the Journal article. This article, however, says that Allen was the last Canandaigua soldier to be returned for burial in Canandaigua. “Soldier’s Body Shipped.” Buffalo Enquirer. May 6 1922. p. 9. Brief news article reports that “the body of Corp. Charles Arthur Allen, a former resident of Canandaigua” was expected to June 13, 2019 Page 4 arrive in Canandaigua that day. It recaps the death of the soldier on Aug. 9, 1918 in Flanders, Belgium. The article in a Buffalo newspaper ties Allen’s story to that of Charles A. Snyder. Allen, Charles A. (Snyder). New York, Veteran Burial Cards, 1861-1898 for Charles A Allen. World War I A-Z. Available on the Internet from Ancestry.com.
