A Discography of the Choral Symphony by J. F. Weber In previous issues of this Journal (XV:2-3; XVI:l-2), an effort was made to compile parts of a composer discography in depth rather than breadth. This one started in a similar vein with the realization that SO CDs of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony had been released (the total is now over 701). This should have been no surprise, for writers have stated that the playing time of the CD was designed to accommodate this work. After eighteen months' effort, a reasonably complete discography of the work has emerged. The wonder is that it took so long to collect a body of information (especially the full names of the vocalists) that had already been published in various places at various times. The Japanese discographers had made a good start, and some of their data would have been difficult to find otherwise, but quite a few corrections and additions have been made and some recording dates have been obtained that seem to have remained 1.Dlpublished so far. The first point to notice is that six versions of the Ninth didn't appear on the expected single CD. Bl:lhm (118) and Solti (96) exceeded the 75 minutes generally assumed (until recently) to be the maximum CD playing time, but Walter (37), Kegel (126), Mehta (127), and Thomas (130) were not so burdened and have been reissued on single CDs since the first CD release. On the other hand, the rather short Leibowitz (76), Toscanini (11), and Busch (25) versions have recently been issued with fillers. -

National Service with the Intelligence Corps involved 18 II Gloria in excelsis Deo 3’17” a posting to Vienna, where he developed a burgeoning passion for opera. He studied 19 III Sanctus 1’35” at Pembroke College, Oxford (1950-53) with Sir Thomas Armstrong and Dr Bernard 20 IV Benedictus 1’40” Rose and became President of the University Music Society. In addition, he took 21 V Agnus Dei 3’03” composition lessons from Lennox Berkeley, whose Gallic sensibility may be said to have (1980) SATB 5’39” influenced Hurd’s own musical language, not least in the attractive and witty Concerto 22 I Captivity 2’34” da Camera for oboe and small orchestra (1979), which he described in his programme 23 II Rejection 1’03” note as a homage to Poulenc’s ‘particular genius’. -

G What RVW means to me Testimonials by sixteen The RVW Society celebrated its 10th anniversary this July – just as we signed up our 1000 th new members member to mark a decade of growth and achievement. When John Bishop (still much missed), Robin Barber and I (Stephen Connock) came together to form the Society our aim was to widen from page 4 appreciation of RVW’s music, particularly through recordings of neglected but high quality music. Looking back, we feel proud of what we have achieved. G 49th Parallel World premieres Through our involvement with Richard Hickox, and Chandos, we have stimulated many fine world by Richard Young premiere recordings, including The Poisoned Kiss, A Cotswold Romance, Norfolk Rhapsody No.2, page 14 The Death of Tintagiles and the original version of A London Symphony. Our work on The Poisoned Kiss represents a special contribution as we worked closely with Ursula Vaughan Williams on shaping the libretto for the recording. And what beautiful music there is! MORGAN POCHIN COMPOSERS James Morgan and Juliette Pochin formed the partnership Morgan Pochin while they were undergraduates at Cambridge, and have gone on to work in a huge variety of fields, from EMMY award winning TV series to UK album chart successes, and, most recently, feature films. They began working in television with Armstrong and Miller (C4) and then followed the Emmy/BAFTA winning The Kumars at no.42, According to Bex (BBC1), Sermon from St. Albion’s (Harry Enfield/Ian Hislop), War Months (Discovery), The Thing about Vince (Timothy Spall - ITV) and Horizon (BBC1). They also wrote the music for a recent Save the Children Christmas TV campaign. Feature films include First Night (Richard E Grant, Sarah Brightman), with the soundtrack album on Sony and music production on the film Quartet which marked Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut and starred Dame Maggie Smith, Sir Tom Courtenay and Billy Connolly. They are attached to two more films currently in pre-production. Their production and writing credits include Alfie Boe's Alfie, Joe McElderry's Classic, Alfie Boe's Bring Him Home and Joe McElderry's Classic Christmas. All these were top 10 chart successes. CDs produced by Morgan Pochin for Decca/Universal have reached over 1 million sales. Their latest album is with Decca's new treble, Jack Topping and is due for release on November 26th. Other credits include Katherine Jenkins Premiere, Songs Without Words, Now is the Hour - Jane Horrocks/Gracie Fields, Classic Rock (Decca), Swimming over London - King's Singers (Signum), Juliette Pochin Venezia Sony Classical and numerous compilations. -

www.bfc.org.uk/youth-choir BFYC Musical Director, Juliette Pochin Juliette Pochin read music at Cambridge where she was a choral scholar before studying at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She is passionate about music education and in particular, encouraging young people to enjoy the numerous benefits of singing in a choir. She co-founded the Brighton Festival Youth Choir in 2002. As a singer, she has performed with many of the UK’s orchestras from performances of Sea Pictures with Iain Burnside and Gerontius with the CBSO, to duetting with Meatloaf on ITV’s Popstar to Opera Star. She has performed for the UN, sung the national anthem at Wembley, Twickenham and the Millenium Stadiums and was the soloist in the televised BBC’s Proms in the Park. She has made numerous recordings including a solo disc for Sony Classical. Juliette is one half of Morgan Pochin Music Productions. As a record producer, she works with all the major labels, producing: Alfie Boe, Collabro, Katherine Jenkins, Sir Cliff Richard, Joe McElderry, Ella Fitzgerald, LSO, RPO, Alexander Armstrong, Dame Vera Lynn 100, and numerous albums for Classic FM. She produced “The Lost Songs of the Suffragettes” for Decca; the first studio album made entirely by women. Feature films include music production and score on The Courier, Operation Mincemeat, First Night, Quartet and Killing Jesus. Stage/concert works include Invictus, A Cantata for Liberty, The Great Enormo, a Kerfuffle in B flat (Brighton Festival, Royal Festival Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall), Cleopatra (Elgar Room, Royal Albert Hall) and numerous songs and arrangements for choir and orchestra. -
