Matthews, medical doctor and anthropologist, actively collected Navajo blankets; to preserve them in museums and gather knowledge about them in publications. His goal was to learn about the Navajos before they merged into dominant American culture. Post, philanthropist, art collector, and socialite, collected Navajo blankets and rugs as status symbols, decorations and souvenirs when they were marketed by traders and weavers. Her collection once exhibited at her estates are now exhibited at the Hillwood Museum and the Museum of Natural History, in Washington, D.C. This thesis is about the collectors, their collections and why they collected Navajo blankets and rugs. Tables and photographs illustrate the collection. 9 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Marjorie Merriweather Post and Washington Matthews made us aware, through their collection held by the Smithsonian Institution, of the academic, artistic, and economic value of collecting Navajo rugs. The text will be accompanied by photographs of the Post and Matthews collection. A brief biographical account will place the collectors and their collections in a historical context. The analysis will be embedded within a discussion of the relationship between Indians and Whites focusing on why Whites began to collect Indian art. Indian-White relations in the U.S. was in part determined by Eighteenth century European philosophy of such theories as the origin of man, progress and degeneration. Eighteenth century thought gave nineteenth century social scientists ideas which determined the treatment and study of American Indians. Europeans portrayed Indians as children of nature and thus wild, uncivilized and inferior. They implied that Whites who shared the same land base were destined for the same fate.

Lewis and 'Our Dog' Scannon" The illustration on this page is of the final working clay model for a new Foundation bronze titled: "Capt. Wm. Clark - 'Map Maker' ". Following discussion and ap­ proval at last August's annual meet­ ing of the Foundation, nationally famous sculptor Robert M. "Bob" Scriver, Browning, Montana, was commissioned by the Foundation's Bronze Committee to create this unique companion bronze to his earlier (1976) work "Capt. Lewis and 'Our Dog' Scannon".1 Earlier in the year the theme for depicting Clark as the exploring party's map maker was chosen by the Committee and aggressive re­ search for historical accuracy was begun by committee members and sculptor Scriver for the new bronze. The work portrays Captain Clark making ready his surveying instru­ ments so as to engage in one of his important contributions to the suc­ cess of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition. 2 In September, Scriver submitted a working clay model for the bronze which, with minor changes, was accepted as pictured here. Wilbur Werner, Cut Bank, Montana, Bronze Committee chairman, anticipates that the first castings will be avail­ able prior to Christmas. The fin­ ished bronze will be of the same scale as the "Lewis/ Scannon" sculp­ ture, and will be approximately 13 inches high (the figure of Clark is approximately 11-1/ 2 high - one­ sixth life-size). The base measures 8 x 10 inches.

    Clarence Birdseye Clarence Birdseye was a man of vision, curiosity, and persistence. He was a naturalist, a businessman and a skillful inventor who used his unique gifts to develop a freezing process that not only preserved food safely, but also preserved its taste and appearance. Birdseye observed, first hand, the ways of the Eskimos who lived in the Arctic and how the use of ice, wind, and temperature almost instantly froze just-caught fish straight through. When the frozen fish were thawed 1) , cooked, and eaten, there was almost no difference in taste and texture than if they would have been prepared from fresh. He concluded it was rapid freezing in the extremely low temperatures that made the food retain 2) its freshness until it was thawed and eaten months later– a procedure called flash freezing. During flash freezing, items are frozen so fast that only small ice crystals are able to form. The cell walls are not damaged, and the frozen food, when thawed, keeps its maximum flavor 3) , texture, and color. The underdeveloped and developing countries of the world have an improving food situation, and the information gained during the long race toward food security for developing countries has been extremely helpful to developed countries as well.

  • Sacajawea, Sacagawea, Sakakawea?

ANDERSON The Shoshoni Indian woman member of the 1804-1806 Lewis and Clark Expedition, Sacagawea, has become one of America's most famous native American heroines. However, romanticists, through poetic license and faulty historical research, have exag- gerated her contributions to the success of the expedition, and have even erroneously recorded the time and place of her death and that of her son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, according to most historians. Even the spelling, pronunciation, meaning, and derivation of the Shoshoni woman's name have become an enigma of history. Due to a theory made popular in 1907 by Dr. Grace Raymond Hebard, the prevailing belief was that Sacagawea died on 9 April 1884, at the age of 100, at Fort Washakie on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. Her son was thought to have died in 1885 at the same place. This erroneous theory was based upon sincere, but unsubstantiated recollections and hearsay testimonials provided by persons who knew a Shoshoni woman and her alleged son who died at Fort Washakie on those dates.' Notwithstanding her diligent searching for nearly three decades, Hebard found no documentation linking the Wind River persons with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Hieb n the fi rst of March 1876, photographer John K. “Jack” Hillers and Otopographer Olin D. Wheeler arrived at the Moqui (Hopi) Pueblo Indian Agency in Arizona, where they met Edward S. Merritt, the teacher and unoffi cial clerk. Under directions from the Smithsonian Institution’s Bureau of Ethnology director John Wesley Powell, Hillers and Wheeler visited the Hopi villages to collect “tangible tokens” of Hopi culture for the Centennial Exhibition opening on 10 May 1876 in Philadelphia. The U.S. Indian agent for the Moqui, William B. Truax, accompanied them from Fort Wingate, New Mexico, to the Hopi villages. Thirty years later, in October 1906, Wheeler published an account of his experiences, titled “In the Land of the Moki,” in an issue of Talisman magazine.
