This monograph examines mass and elite opinion before and during the Prague Spring era with a unique collection of survey datasets. This research has four key findings. First, public opinion on the eve of the Prague Spring re- Pat Lyons forms in 1967 was politically engaged and was in favour of change. Second, Mass and Elite Attitudes during citizens’ political attitudes in May 1968 were supportive of key features of multiparty democracy, and these attitudes are broadly similar to those evi- the Prague Spring Era: dent in the Czech Republic today. Third, public support for political reform was complex where citizens exhibited hopes for greater liberalization but Importance and Legacy were cognizant of the limits constraining reform. Fourth, the Prague Spring elite differed in terms of background but exhibited consensus with regard to political outlook. This empirical research fits with the new wave of historical work that emphasizes the importance of social change in understanding the Prague Spring era, and demonstrates the continuity in Czech citizens’ politi- cal attitudes under both communism and liberal democracy.     Building A Movement In The Non-Profit Industrial Complex Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Michelle Oyakawa Graduate Program in Sociology The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Korie Edwards, Advisor Andrew Martin Steve Lopez Copyrighted by Michelle Mariko Oyakawa 2017 Abstract Today, democracy in the United States is facing a major challenge: Wealthy elites have immense power to influence election outcomes and policy decisions, while the political participation of low-income people and racial minorities remains relatively low. In this context, non-profit social movement organizations are one of the key vehicles through which ordinary people can exercise influence in our political system and pressure elite decision-makers to take action on matters of concern to ordinary citizens. A crucial fact about social movement organizations is that they often receive significant financial support from elites through philanthropic foundations. However, there is no research that details exactly how non-profit social movement organizations gain resources from elites or that analyzes how relationships with elite donors impact grassroots organizations’ efforts to mobilize people to fight for racial and economic justice. My dissertation aims to fill that gap. It is an ethnographic case study of a multiracial statewide organization called the Ohio Organizing Collaborative (OOC) that coordinates progressive social movement organizations in Ohio. Member organizations work on a variety of issues, including ending mass incarceration, environmental justice, improving access to early childhood education, and raising the minimum wage. In 2016, the OOC registered over 155,000 people to vote in Ohio.

    Aftermath: Accounting for the Holocaust in the Czech Republic Krista Hegburg Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERISTY 2013 © 2013 Krista Hegburg All rights reserved Abstract Aftermath: Accounting for the Holocaust in the Czech Republic Krista Hegburg Reparations are often theorized in the vein of juridical accountability: victims of historical injustices call states to account for their suffering; states, in a gesture that marks a restoration of the rule of law, acknowledge and repair these wrongs via financial compensation. But as reparations projects intersect with a consolidation of liberalism that, in the postsocialist Czech Republic, increasingly hinges on a politics of recognition, reparations concomitantly interpellate minority subjects as such, instantiating their precarious inclusion into the body po litic in a way that vexes the both the historical justice and contemporary recognition reparatory projects seek. This dissertation analyzes claims made by Czech Romani Holocaust survivors in reparations programs, the social work apparatus through which they pursued their claims, and the often contradictory demands of the complex legal structures that have governed eligibility for reparations since the immediate aftermath of the war, and argues for an ethnographic examination of the forms of discrepant reciprocity and commensuration that underpin, and often foreclose, attempts to account for the Holocaust in contemporary Europe. Ballbach* KDI School-FU Korea-Europe Programme Institute of Korean Studies Freie Univesität Berlin 2020 The parliamentary elections in South Korea on 15 April were the first nationwide democratic elections since the outbreak of the corona pandemic. The fact that these elections could be and were held at all is directly related to the strategy that the South Korean government is pursuing to contain the pandemic. The clear winner was the incumbent President Moon Jae-in, who was rewarded in particular for his successful crisis management. But the election is also a victory for the still comparatively young democracy in South Korea. Since the government and the population have learned from the experience of previous epidemics, citizens have not had to choose between exercising their democratic rights and protecting their health.

Abstract: From 1865 to 1870, a crisis atmosphere hovered around the issue of the massive public debt created during the recently concluded Civil War, leading, in part, to the passage of a Constitutional Amendment ensuring the “validity of the public debt.” However, the Civil War debt crisis was not a financial one, but a political one. The Republican and Democratic Parties took concerns over the public debt and magnified them into panics so that they could serve political ends—there was never any real danger that the United States would default on its debt for financial reasons. There were, in fact, three interrelated crises generated during the period: a repudiation crisis (grounded upon fears of the cancellation of the war debt), a repayment crisis (arising from calls to repay the debt in depreciated currency), and a refunding crisis (stemming from a concern of a run on the Treasury). The end of the Civil War debt crisis came only when there was no more political advantage to be gained from exploiting the issue of the public debt.
