Building A Movement In The Non-Profit Industrial Complex Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Michelle Oyakawa Graduate Program in Sociology The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Korie Edwards, Advisor Andrew Martin Steve Lopez Copyrighted by Michelle Mariko Oyakawa 2017 Abstract Today, democracy in the United States is facing a major challenge: Wealthy elites have immense power to influence election outcomes and policy decisions, while the political participation of low-income people and racial minorities remains relatively low. In this context, non-profit social movement organizations are one of the key vehicles through which ordinary people can exercise influence in our political system and pressure elite decision-makers to take action on matters of concern to ordinary citizens. A crucial fact about social movement organizations is that they often receive significant financial support from elites through philanthropic foundations. However, there is no research that details exactly how non-profit social movement organizations gain resources from elites or that analyzes how relationships with elite donors impact grassroots organizations’ efforts to mobilize people to fight for racial and economic justice. My dissertation aims to fill that gap. It is an ethnographic case study of a multiracial statewide organization called the Ohio Organizing Collaborative (OOC) that coordinates progressive social movement organizations in Ohio. Member organizations work on a variety of issues, including ending mass incarceration, environmental justice, improving access to early childhood education, and raising the minimum wage. In 2016, the OOC registered over 155,000 people to vote in Ohio. -

Ballbach* KDI School-FU Korea-Europe Programme Institute of Korean Studies Freie Univesität Berlin 2020 The parliamentary elections in South Korea on 15 April were the first nationwide democratic elections since the outbreak of the corona pandemic. The fact that these elections could be and were held at all is directly related to the strategy that the South Korean government is pursuing to contain the pandemic. The clear winner was the incumbent President Moon Jae-in, who was rewarded in particular for his successful crisis management. But the election is also a victory for the still comparatively young democracy in South Korea. Since the government and the population have learned from the experience of previous epidemics, citizens have not had to choose between exercising their democratic rights and protecting their health. -

VOLUME 3 NO 2 121 THE DOMINANT-PARTY SYSTEM Challenges for South Africa’s Second Decade of Democracy By Heidi Brooks Heidi Brooks wrote this paper as a research assistant in the Research, Publications and Information Department at EISA. She is now currently undertaking an MA in Political Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The existence of a dominant-party system in South Africa has raised growing concerns over its implications for the consolidation of democracy. This paper argues that while there appears to be no real threat to democracy in South Africa it does face several challenges, and successful democratic consolidation will depend upon alertness to signs of undemocratic practices associated with dominant-party systems. It is crucial to ensure that government remains accountable to its citizens. The ANC has demonstrated commitment to democratic principles and there remains sufficient debate and activism within society to keep a check on authoritarian tendencies. However, South African politics is characterised by weak opposition parties that continue to be associated with racial identity and hold little credibility amongst the electorate. South Africans also continue to vote in racial blocs, and the existence of a dominant party and a weak opposition has resulted in emerging voter apathy and withdrawal amongst some sections of the electorate. If the opposition is to fulfil its role in safeguarding accountability and democratic practice it must regain credibility and break away from racial politics to appeal to the African community. Civil society’s role in ensuring government accountability is also pivotal, particularly in the absence of a strong political opposition. -

Abstract: From 1865 to 1870, a crisis atmosphere hovered around the issue of the massive public debt created during the recently concluded Civil War, leading, in part, to the passage of a Constitutional Amendment ensuring the “validity of the public debt.” However, the Civil War debt crisis was not a financial one, but a political one. The Republican and Democratic Parties took concerns over the public debt and magnified them into panics so that they could serve political ends—there was never any real danger that the United States would default on its debt for financial reasons. There were, in fact, three interrelated crises generated during the period: a repudiation crisis (grounded upon fears of the cancellation of the war debt), a repayment crisis (arising from calls to repay the debt in depreciated currency), and a refunding crisis (stemming from a concern of a run on the Treasury). The end of the Civil War debt crisis came only when there was no more political advantage to be gained from exploiting the issue of the public debt. -

The Commonwealth Observer Mission was led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo, former Foreign Minister and Attorney-General of Ghana. The other members of the Mission were Hon. Dorothy Pine-McLarty OJ, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica; and Sheikh Abdul Carimo Nordine Sau, Chairperson of the National Elections Commission of Mozambique. The Mission was supported by a four-person staff team from the Commonwealth Secretariat. The Mission was tasked with determining whether the elections were conducted according to the standards for democratic elections to which South Africa had committed itself. During their time in South Africa, the Observer Mission met with a range of stakeholders including political parties, civil society organisations, media representatives, other election observer missions and Commonwealth High Commissioners. -
