Andante non troppo – Pochissimo più animato 3:24 Prokofiev’s works for violin and piano In 1918 Sergei Prokofiev left the Soviet Union via the back door, travelling from Vladivostok into the USA via Japan. Eighteen years later, after several visits and performances, he returned permanently, taking up residence in Moscow with his family. Nostalgia had driven the cosmopolitan composer to this move, and generous promises by Stalin’s mighty henchmen facilitated his decision. The two violin sonatas were composed after his voluntary repatriation and finalised during the war years during which he was mainly occupied with large-scale film scores, oratorios and symphonic projects. In the face of these colossal works, geared towards open and public presentation, his chamber works on the one hand provide a necessary contrast, whilst on the other they seem to be inward echoes of his mighty works. The two violin sonatas vary significantly from one another, representing two opposite poles of Prokofiev’s musical expressivity. -

INTRODUCTION Gustav Mahler was early recognized as one of the greatest conductors of his time. Yet he was highly controversial as a composer, both during his life and in the years after his death. In 1933, because of his Jewish roots, the Nazis prohibited his music both in Germany and in the occupied countries. His last refuge was then the Anglo-Saxon world. It is only in the sixties that little by little his music found its rightful place in concert repertories, thanks largely to recordings. Mahler was long accused of being "banal" because of the heterogeneous nature of his melodic material and "sentimental" because of his expressiveness, which was thought to be self- indulgent. Today, his use of stylized folk material seems to be one of the most original and forward-looking aspects of his style. For us, he is an exceptional composer, not just because of the breadth and power of his ten symphonies, but also because of his place in history, right at the junction of two centuries and two eras—the romantic and the modern. His evolution is fascinating, from the First Symphony of his youth, which doesn’t resemble any other music of his time, all the way to the Ninth, which is very close to the future masterpieces of Berg and Webern. Theodor Adorno said that Mahler was the first musician since Beethoven to have a "late Portrait taken in New York (1910) style". After her father’s escape to the West in 1984, two years of reprisals by the regime followed, intensively shaping Franziska Pietsch’s understanding of music: deprived of any possibility of playing concerts or taking lessons, her chosen path towards hope – against desperation, refusal, fear and despotism – led inwards. Music became the only language in which she was able to express herself freely and which gave her the necessary strength to withstand external circumstances, continuing to hope for freedom. These were the origins of the intensity and artistic depth which characterise Franziska Pietsch’s playing to the present day. Franziska Pietsch and Detlev Eisinger make their audite debut with chamber works by Edvard Grieg.
