Herbert H. Lehman College THE CLASS OF of The City University of New York May 28, 2020 2020 1 Dear Class of 2020: As I write this, I am reflecting on the 2018 Winter Olympics. I remember being impressed by the vignettes highlighting the personal sacrifice and commitment that led some of the most admired and talented athletes in the world to the medal stand. Those traits – sacrifice and commitment – came to mind when I thought about your graduating class of more than 3500 students. Though you did not have the privilege those Olympic athletes enjoyed to devote themselves completely to just one thing, you have shown, especially in the months leading up to this moment, that you share the same kind of commitment and sacrifices needed to help you take your place among champions. While studying, many of you have worked several part-time jobs, caring for children and relatives, commuting many hours to and from classes. Without the benefit of a financial safety net, you have also now managed to complete the disrupted term of spring term, often with inadequate internet access and with multiple challenges compounded by stay-at-home restrictions. What you have achieved would be admirable in any context but in the context of 2020, it is phenomenal. Nearly 40 percent of you have lost your jobs and critical income this spring. Some of you have battled COVID-19 yourselves, and far too many of you have friends and loved ones coping with COVID-19. It grieves me to say that at least two of your peers lost the fight with coronavirus, with the Bronx being one of the counties hardest-hit by the pandemic in the country. -

Operetta after the Habsburg Empire by Ulrike Petersen A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Professor Richard Taruskin, Chair Professor Mary Ann Smart Professor Elaine Tennant Spring 2013 © 2013 Ulrike Petersen All Rights Reserved Abstract Operetta after the Habsburg Empire by Ulrike Petersen Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Berkeley Professor Richard Taruskin, Chair This thesis discusses the political, social, and cultural impact of operetta in Vienna after the collapse of the Habsburg Empire. As an alternative to the prevailing literature, which has approached this form of musical theater mostly through broad surveys and detailed studies of a handful of well‐known masterpieces, my dissertation presents a montage of loosely connected, previously unconsidered case studies. Each chapter examines one or two highly significant, but radically unfamiliar, moments in the history of operetta during Austria’s five successive political eras in the first half of the twentieth century. Exploring operetta’s importance for the image of Vienna, these vignettes aim to supply new glimpses not only of a seemingly obsolete art form but also of the urban and cultural life of which it was a part. Andante non troppo – Pochissimo più animato 3:24 Prokofiev’s works for violin and piano In 1918 Sergei Prokofiev left the Soviet Union via the back door, travelling from Vladivostok into the USA via Japan. Eighteen years later, after several visits and performances, he returned permanently, taking up residence in Moscow with his family. Nostalgia had driven the cosmopolitan composer to this move, and generous promises by Stalin’s mighty henchmen facilitated his decision. The two violin sonatas were composed after his voluntary repatriation and finalised during the war years during which he was mainly occupied with large-scale film scores, oratorios and symphonic projects. In the face of these colossal works, geared towards open and public presentation, his chamber works on the one hand provide a necessary contrast, whilst on the other they seem to be inward echoes of his mighty works. The two violin sonatas vary significantly from one another, representing two opposite poles of Prokofiev’s musical expressivity. -

Solheim http://www.duo.uio.no Trykk: Reprosentralen, Universitetet i Oslo IV V Sammendrag I denne oppgaven undersøker jeg hvordan musikknettsidenes innhold er annerledes sammenlignet med avisenes musikkartikler på nett. Ved bruk av kvalitativt intervju med tre journalister og to musikkskribenter, og kvantitativ innholdsanalyse av 454 artikler, hentet fra en toukersperiode høsten 2016 og våren 2017, er dette grunnlag for studiens analyse og funn. Basert på dette har jeg analysert hva avisene fokuserer på av innhold, hva musikknettsider fokuserer på, og hva som er likt og ulikt mellom dem. Dette blir hovedsakelig diskutert ut ifra teorier om portvaktfunksjonen og nyhetskriterier. Studiens hovedfunn viser at avisene publiserer mer kjendisnyheter på sine musikksider enn anmeldelser av musikkutgivelser, mens musikknettsidene fokuserer mye på musikknyheter og -kritikk. Både aviser og musikknettsider prioriterer norske artister, men hvilke norske artister de skriver om, varierer fra nettside til nettside. Avisene skriver mer om norske artister kjent fra talentprogram, noe musikknettsidene ikke publiserer om. Det er tydelig at det har skjedd en endring i avisenes innhold på nett, men også en endring hos etablerte musikknettsider som møter konkurranse fra andre musikknettsider.
