We would also like to thank all farmers, landowners and sponsors for their continued support. It was another great year for Denise Bland’s kennel winning both the Senior Championship with Jenny’s Aura and the Puppy Championship with Huntsman’s Nimrod. Both hounds finished clear of the rest of the competition. Well done and congratulations for an exceptional achievement. This was a repeat of the success that Denise had in 2013 when she won both Championships with her hound’s Jenny’s Rascal and Jenny’s Choice. In comparison to last year there has been a slight reduction in the number of litters with 15 litters in 2017 and only 13 in 2018, similarly there has been a slight reduction in the number of pups registered dropping to 83 in 2018 compared to 123 in 2017. Overall this represents a steady reduction over the years so it is more important than ever for the sport to continue to advertise itself and make it appealing to new members and owners of hounds to keep the sport going. We need to encourage younger members to join the sport. On a more positive note in 2018 we had fifty Junior members an increase on the year before. As Chair I would like to thank the Junior Club for their efforts in promoting the sport and organising the Junior competitions and events throughout the year. From the numbers this seems to be having some effect in attracting the next generation of hound trailers to the sport. Looking forward to the next season and best wishes and good luck to all dog owners for the coming season. Barry Laidler – Chairman FROM OUR PATRON Hound trailing in Cumbria is a miracle of survival. As I write this (on March 28th) the Mother of Parliaments which I attend in the House of Lords seems to me to have given up Government and taken up squabbling. Somehow this humiliates us right across the board. The counterforce to that is the continued existence of organisations like this. Through thick and thin men and women of Cumbria have continued with a local and unique tradition which shows the best of what we are. It’s competitive, it’s original, it draws in people who are steady, decent and properly grounded. And of course, there are the dogs! It never ceases to be thrilling to watch a ‘slip’ and a good finish and occasionally, if I can steady my binoculars, a glimpse of the hounds scaling the fells with such speed and assurance. The survival I referred to has been brought about by people who love the sport, love the landscape and love their hounds. When so much seems to be falling apart it’s very re-assuring and a tonic that Hound Trailing doesn’t go under; it goes on, and the very best of luck to it. With best wishes, Melvyn Bragg 3 ROLL OF HONOUR 2018 Congratulations to the following: Senior Champion – D. Bland’s Jenny’s Aura. Runner-up – A. Little’s Jenny’s Delight. Puppy Champion – D. Members in the area remain around the same as last year, 47 in total, with an increase in kennel numbers by one from 17 to 18. Congratulations to all those who supported our trails and were awarded trophies. Thanks for all your support over the season. Over the season although the area dogs didn’t do that well in winning trophies as part of the area competitions they did extremely well across the Association trails and the Roll of Honour for the season. Congratulations goes to Reg Smith for winning the Veteran Championship with Aspire. Along with the Veteran Championship, Aspire was also joint first for the Tot Kelso Cup for most points in the major trails, along with J. Abram and N. McMaster’s Rita. Aspire ran consistently throughout the season and notched up veteran wins at the May Day Trails held at Helton, the Bitch Produce Trails at Redmain, as well as at the October Trails at Rusland. Another hound to perform well through out the season was Barry Laidler’s Best Mate. It notched up 15 puppy wins throughout the season. It won the Puppy race at the May Day Trails, The Dog Produce Trail at Lazonby as well as the Puppy race at the International Trail held at Gamelsby. So not a bad season overall. Other hounds to feature in the major trails included Les and Pat Black’s Canny Mover who won the Hounds at the May Day Trails, Wild Gypsy won the Hounds at the October Trails for the Wilding family and Bublé won the Open Restricted trail for Russell Dawson at the Dog Produce Trails held at Lazonby. The area looks forward to the next season and wishes everyone well and good luck. The area committee would like to thank everyone for their support throughout last year. The committee is short on members so anyone willing to join the committee will be welcomed with open arms. • The Geology and Petrology of the Ennerdale
THE GEOLOGY AND PETROLOGY OF THE ENNERDALE GRANOPHYRE. ITS__ METAMORPHIC AUREOLE __AND ASSOCIATED MINERALIZATION A Thesis presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Lewis Clark. Department of Geology, The University of Leeds. June, 1963. a b s t r a c t The E n n e r d a l e G r a n o p h y r e occurs in the Latte District between Buttermere and Wasdale. It is a stocK shaped, composite intrusion which was emplaced at the close of the Caledonian earth movements. The country rocks of the granophyre are the Borrowdale Volcanic Series and the Skiddaw Slates. The oldest rocks in the Ennerdale Granophyre are a series of dioritic rocks which have been largely metasomatised by the later granophyre magma into a series of granodioritic hybrids. Eighty percent of the outcrop of the Ennerdale Granophyre is occupied by a fine grained granophyre, the Main Granophyre. The youngest rocks associated with the granophyre: are a series of fine aplitic microgranites and rhyolitic felsites. Metamorphism by the granophyre has been very slight. The main changes in the Skiddaw Slates are a change in colour and an increase in hardness, but the slates in places in Ennerda.le have been soda—metasomatised. Macroscopic changes in the Berrowdale /olcanic Series are negligible, but there have been important mineralogicalL changes within a narrow aureole adjacent to the granophyre. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This research was made possible by the award of a D.S.I.R. Research Studentship. I am extremely grateful to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and Professor W.

Mapping the Late Medieval and Post Medieval Landscape of Cumbria Two Volumes Volume 1: Text Caron Egerton Newman Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of History, Classics and Archaeology Newcastle University Submitted: June 2014 Abstract This study is an analysis of the development of rural settlement patterns and field systems in Cumbria from the later medieval period through to the late eighteenth century. It uses documentary, cartographic and archaeological evidence. This evidence is interpreted utilising the techniques of historic landscape characterisation (HLC), map regression and maps created by the author, summarising and synthesising historical and archaeological data. The mapped settlement data, in particular, has been manipulated using tools of graphic analysis available within a Graphical Information System (GIS). The initial product is a digital map of Cumbria in the late eighteenth century, based on the county-scale maps of that period, enhanced with information taken from enclosure maps and awards, and other post medieval cartographic sources. From this baseline, an interpretation of the late medieval landscape was developed by adding information from other data sources, such as place names and documentary evidence. The approach was necessarily top-down and broad brush, in order to provide a landscape-scale, sub-regional view. This both addresses the deficiencies within the standard historical approach to landscape development, and complements such approaches. Standard historical approaches are strong on detail, but can be weak when conclusions based on localised examples are extrapolated and attributed to the wider landscape. The methodology adopted by this study allows those local analyses to be set within a broader landscape context, providing another tool to use alongside more traditional approaches to historic landscape studies.
