Introduction Many counties are in the process of compiling a County Rare Plant Register, to assist in the study and conservation of their rare species. The process is made easier if the county has a published Flora and a strong Biological Records Centre, and Durham is fortunate to have Gordon Graham's Flora and the Durham Wildlife Trust‘s ―Recorder" system. We also have a Biodiversity project, based at Rainton Meadows, to carry out conservation projects to protect the rare species. The purpose of this document is to introduce the Rare Plant Register and to give an account of the information that it holds, and the species to be included. -

This fault zone has been proposed as a source of deep geothermal energy; to facilitate the design of a geothermal project in the town of Bishop Auckland further investigation of its geometry was necessary and led to the present study. We show using three-dimensional modelling of a dense local gravity survey, combined with structural inversion, that this fault has a ramp-flat-ramp geometry, ~250 m of latest Carboniferous / Early Permian downthrow having occurred on a fault surface that is not a planar updip continuation of that which had accommodated the many kilometres of Dinantian extension. The gravity survey also reveals relatively low-density sediments in the hanging-wall of the Dinantian fault, interpreted as porous alluvial fan deposits, indicating that a favourable geothermal target indeed exists in the area. -

LANDSCAPE CHARACTER THE NORTH PENNINES The North Pennines The North Pennines The North Pennines Countryside Character Area County Boundary Key characteristics • An upland landscape of high moorland ridges and plateaux divided by broad pastoral dales. • Alternating strata of Carboniferous limestones, sandstones and shales give the topography a stepped, horizontal grain. • Millstone Grits cap the higher fells and form distinctive flat-topped summits. Hard igneous dolerites of the Great Whin Sill form dramatic outcrops and waterfalls. • Broad ridges of heather moorland and acidic grassland and higher summits and plateaux of blanket bog are grazed by hardy upland sheep. • Pastures and hay meadows in the dales are bounded by dry stone walls, which give way to hedgerows in the lower dale. • Tree cover is sparse in the upper and middle dale. Hedgerow and field trees and tree-lined watercourses are common in the lower dale. • Woodland cover is low. Upland ash and oak-birch woods are found in river gorges and dale side gills, and larger conifer plantations in the moorland fringes. • The settled dales contain small villages and scattered farms. Buildings have a strong vernacular character and are built of local stone with roofs of stone flag or slate. • The landscape is scarred in places by mineral workings with many active and abandoned limestone and whinstone quarries and the relics of widespread lead workings. • An open landscape, broad in scale, with panoramic views from higher ground to distant ridges and summits. • The landscape of the moors is remote, natural and elemental with few man made features and a near wilderness quality in places. -
Short Walks Group
SHORT WALKS GROUP We’ve been blessed with good weather this spring so have been able to walk each month though the March walk had to be altered as the ground was so boggy and muddy. 11th March The walk was changed to a shortish road walk from the Derby Arms at Witherslack with refreshments at the pub afterwards. A good group of walkers joined the walk including my husband Chris on his scooter. After a spell of bad weather everyone was delighted to have a pleasant day and get out and enjoy a walk. We walked the old road to Millside and then up the quiet lane to Beckhead where the stream appears from under the rocks – a wonderfully tranquil spot. We carried on a short distance to where the lane ends and stopped for coffee. We then retraced our steps past some wonderful houses at Beckhead to Millside where we deviated down a short path to see the old millwheel- now part of someone’s garden. Back to the road we wound our way along the quiet lanes back to the Derby Arms for a welcome drink. 8th April It was a cold but bright day, and nineteen intrepid walkers gathered in Gummer’s Howe Car Park. A very pleasant 5 miler on good paths across pasture and fell side with magnificent views all the way lay ahead. We were all surprised how busy the car park was, but then realised that it was half term for Cumbria. Several family groups were headed for Gummer’s Howe, but not us. -

Teesdale Local Plan – Adopted June 2002 CHAPTER 5 POPULATION & HOUSING Teesdale Local Plan – Adopted June 2002 5) POPULATION & HOUSING 5.0 INTRODUCTION 5.0.1 The projected population of the district is inextricably linked to the District’s future housing requirements. The maintenance of a stable population is a realistic goal for the next ten years. Due to the ageing demographic structure of the district, in–migration would be required to achieve this goal. 5.1 POPULATION PROJECTIONS & HOUSING REQUIREMENTS 5.1.1 The housing requirements of the plan are calculated on the basis of Durham County Structure Plan Policy. Policy 7 of the Structure Plan states that Teesdale will require about 1,000 more dwellings between 1991 – 2006. As this Plan extends to 2010 the housing requirement calculation will need to make an estimate for the building requirement between 2006 and 2010. This is achieved by taking the Structure Plan figure, converting that to an annual building rate and thereby providing an estimate for the period 2006-2010. The housing requirement will also need to take into account those dwellings completed between 1991 – 1998. 5.1.2 According to the published 1991 census figures the Population of Teesdale is 24,068 of which 306 are in communal establishments, Population projections based on 1997 estimates show the population is expected to increase slightly to 24,193 by 2010, with the number of persons in communal establishments expected to remain constant, this would lead to 23,887 requiring housing. 5.1.3 As previously mentioned above, latest projections show a slight increase in population added to that the reduction in the average household size would result in the need for additional dwellings. -

THE photograph issued with this year's volume of proceedings, illustrates an important section exposed in the valley of the Bibble, nearly opposite the village of Horton. The Silurian rocks, composed of grits, slates and limestones, extend over a large area, bounded by the line of the Pennine Fault, running in a north and south direction, and that of the equally important series of Craven Faults which run eastward from Ingleton, their position being indicated by the precipitous Scars of GiggXeswick, Attermire, Malham, Yordale and Kilnsey. Bounded on the west and south by these Faults, the Silurian rocks underlie all the highest moun• tains in Yorkshire, forming a tolerably even base, with a general dip to the north-east. Sections exposing the junction of these rocks with the superincumbent Mountain Limestone may be seen beneath Whernside and Ingleborough, in the Ingleton and Dale Becks, and in Clapdale; underlying Cross Fell and Mickle Fell, they may be seen at High Cup Gill, and as shown by Mr. Dakyns, at the Pencil Mill, near Cronkley Scar. Penyghent, and the extensive Limestone Fells of Malham and Kilnsey also have a basement of Silurian Grits. Perhaps the finest section, showing the junction of the two formations, anywhere exposed, is the one chosen for the subject of this photograph. The Silurian Rocks have long been quarried, and are locally known as the Horton Flagstones; they are a bluish grey colour, rather coarse structure, and can be obtained of very large size. -
