It is most famous world-wide for its San Fermín festival also known as "The Running of the Bulls" held each year from July 6th - 14th, which features the daily bullrun or "Encierro." There are many interesting things to do and explore in Pamplona for travelers, as it is a main city on the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago). The most important religious building is the fourteenth century Gothic Cathedral, with an outstanding cloister and a Neoclassical façade. Visitors may also enjoy wine tours, Roman mosaics and buildings, and the many beautiful green parks. Our luxury tours in Spain are particularly popular among tourists over the age of 50. In recent years, younger clientele are becoming increasingly represented on the tours as well. As we expect the majority of passengers to be over 50, we have designed the tour to include activities and accommodations best suited for our guests as well as to provide upscale service throughout the trip. What about young adults? In the past we have had families with teenage children go on this tour and have received positive feedback. There are many interesting things to do as a family throughout the trip. What about children? Children are permitted on the tour, however we typically do not receive bookings for families traveling with young children. As each child is different, we leave it up to the parents to decide if this type of trip would be of interest to their child. When / how soon should I book? We recommend booking as soon as possible if you have strong preferences for room type. If this tour is something that you are interested in, we suggest reserving your spot now, as it is likely to sell out quickly. Is this tour wheelchair acceptable? Up to 2/3 wheelchairs can be made available upon special request for guests with difficulties walking or who tire easily and would like a wheelchair during off train excursions. A certain degree of mobility is expected for guests to fully enjoy the tour. Please let us know at the time of booking if you would like to request a wheelchair for use during excursions. What is the weather like? Spain experiences a mild oceanic climate, with not too many extreme temperatures. July tends to be a warm month. Please bring along a light jacket or for chilly evenings, and sun protection for warm afternoons. Is there an option to attend a bullfight? Yes, there are multiple opportunities to view a bullfight on this tour. Bullfights are completely optional and entrance tickets are not included in the cost of the tour. Guests can expect to pay about 200 Euro per ticket for low level seats. Please let us know at the time of booking if you would like to attend a bullfight, so we can make reservations accordingly. We understand and respect our guests’ decision to either attend or not attend bullfights. Other optional activities will be made available such as cooking classes or visits to the wine country. These activities will be based on the requests and interests of our guests and will be available about 3 months prior to the start date of the tour. Please let us know at the time of booking if you have a particular interest or idea for an activity. Guest also have the option to enjoy Pamplona and the San Fermin festivities on their as well. Expenses How much should I expect to tip? Tipping is not mandatory, and is left to the sole discretion of the traveler. This is a decision that should be made based on your enjoyment of the journey and the service. What are the passport/visa requirements for travel to Spain? Please ensure that your passport has at least three blank pages and that it is valid for at least six months beyond your departure date from Spain. Please check with your local embassy regarding visa requirements. When should I plan to arrive? The meeting time for the tour is in the morning on Friday, July 12th. Full instructions will be printed on your travel voucher. We recommend arriving at least 1 day prior to your tour so that you may acclimate and relax prior to embarking on your exciting journey. Corp. www.cognizantcommunication.com THE FESTIVAL AS CARNIVALESQUE: SOCIAL GOVERNANCE AND CONTROL AT PAMPLONA’S SAN FERMIN FIESTA NEIL RAVENSCROFT* and XAVIER MATTEUCCI† *University of Brighton, UK †Canada Using empirical data from a questionnaire survey of residents and visitors attending the 1998 San Fermin fiesta in Pamplona, Spain, this article offers a critique of the contemporary construction of festivals as interpretive devices. Informed by the work of Bakhtin, this article makes the case that festivals should be understood as carnivalesque inversions of the everyday, deployed to maintain and reinforce social order and, thus, the discipline of bodies. This is achieved, it is argued, by creating “liminal zones” in which people can engage in “deviant” practices, safe in the knowledge that they are not transgressing the wider social structure they encounter in everyday life. It is suggested that the attraction of visitors is crucial, in providing a “cover” for this activity, as well as a conduit for the gradual legitimation of new and revised social values. The article concludes by arguing that this need for tourists (local and outsiders) is both recognized and embraced by residents and visitors alike, with neither fraction naive enough to believe that authenticity resides in representation, or even cultural (re)production.     The running of the bulls is a Spanish tradition in Pamplona. It lasts 8 days and it all starts on July 6 exactly at midday when the mayor of Pamplona shoots a rocket. This is a sign that the celebration has started. The participants are dressed in white and they wear red neck-cloths and belts. They open champagne, mostly used for sprinkling other people. Then the situation becomes very wild. There are a lot of people on the street: sellers, gamblers, wind bands, giant puppets, singing Indians, thousands of locals and tourists. Their habit is drinking a lot of alcohol, especially red wine. The main event is running of the bulls or encierro in Spanish. It starts every day at eight in the morning near the Plaza Santo Domingo and they run, sometimes wildly, sometimes less. As a sign that the run has begun they shoot the first rocket. Then they shoot the second one when the bulls are out on the streets. Six bulls which are trying to attack the participants from behind run down the 900 meters long street to the bullring with a lot of spectators. The participants can also get hurt or even killed. All of the six bulls are going to be killed at the bull fight in the stadium with six other stronger bulls. The bull fights in the stadium begin at half past six in the afternoon. First, there comes the first bull. There is also a person called “picador”, who waves a red cloth in front of the bull. That makes the bull very nervous so it becomes very wild and starts to run all over the stadium.
