Enrique Maya Miranda Mayor of Pamplona 9 February 2021 Via e-mail: [email protected] Dear Mr Mayor, In light of the news that the San Fermín festival and the Running of the Bulls have been cancelled for 2021 because of the pandemic, I am contacting you in the hope that you will seize this opportunity to usher in a new era in Pamplona – one without bullfighting. You’ll recall that, last year, PETA and our affiliates offered to give the city of Pamplona a whopping €250,000 if you committed to ending the Running of the Bulls and the subsequent bullfights permanently. That offer still stands, but now, we are willing increase it to €298,000 – the additional €48,000 symbolising the 48 bulls who would be spared not only the frightening stampede down Pamplona’s streets but also a grisly death at the San Fermín festival each year. We ask that they be retired and would work with you to make that happen. While bullfighting has a long history in Spain – as bull baiting did in the United Kingdom and dog fighting in the United States – times and sensibilities change. The majority of people around the world, including in Spain, agree that bulls should never be the subject of torment for human entertainment. They recognise that it is unjust to goad sensitive animals down slippery streets or pit a sword-wielding man against an unwilling, confused animal. That is why people everywhere want to see an end to bull runs and bullfights. The current pandemic has only amplified this sentiment – almost everyone now realises that the way we treat animals must drastically change. Now is the moment to be on the right side of history. We hope you will accept our offer and allow Pamplona to reinvent itself for the enjoyment of all. We would be happy to work with you to plan a new San Fermín festival that represents the kind of world we want to return to after the pandemic – one that is compassionate and respectful of both humans and other animals. FABIOLA UBANI Born in Pamplona, (Navarra) and Fine Arts degree, Fabiola Ubani has been combining her teaching at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with an intense artistic production along a trajectory of more than twenty years. Interested in the engraving as a form of expression, from the beginning she discovers the possibilities offered by the hybridization of the processes of this traditional technique with those existing in other fields also related with the multiple reproduction of the image. This leads her to incorporate in her work the techniques used in the origins of photography (gum bichromate, cyanotype), the use of the laboratory for the generation of plates from lith film, electrography as an image transfer tool and, as logical consequence of this evolution, the exploration of the digital image as a resource in the attainment of visual textures and, ultimately, language of expression in itself. Bringing together his academic and artistic facets, in 2016 she formulated her doctoral PhD under the title "Graphic art and technology (a private relationship)", in which, following an analysis of her work, she stresses the fluid relationship that has always existed between engraving and photography and delves into the concept of what in the field of visual arts has come to be called "digital matrix". Fechas Relevantes En La Historia Del Valle De Egüés
Fechas relevantes en la historia del Valle de Egüés 1500 a.C. De esta época es datable el hacha pulimentada y de forma trapezoidal encontrada en Elcano. Esto nos permite decir que, al menos desde esta época, estaba habitado el Valle de Egüés por asentamientos de los primitivos vascones. Sus primeros pobladores probablemente se establecieran allí mucho antes, durante la edad de piedra. 75 a.C. El general romano Pompeio establece su campamento en la actual Pamplona profundizando la romanización de los habitantes de la cuenca entre los que se encuentran los pobladores de Egüés. Las relaciones serían amistosas y de mutua colaboración y enriquecimiento. Se han encontrado algunos restos cerámicos y metálicos en Sarriguren. 1032. Sancho III “el mayor” restituye a la catedral de Pamplona todos sus bienes entre los que hay algunos del Valle de Egüés. Especialmente significativa es la mención a la cesión por parte del monarca de parte del uso del molino conocido como Atea (Huarte) a la catedral pamplonesa. Nos da la idea de la importancia económica del Valle de Egüés como centro de producción agrícola para la monarquía navarra. Probablemente desde los inicios de su expansión (siglos VII a IX) esta dinastía ya se apoyó en el valle de Egüés para levantar su poderío económico, que es lo que intentaban hacer con la sede episcopal de Pamplona en el momento de la cesión de tierras y derechos que consta en el documento del que hablamos. Siglo XII. Es el siglo en el que realizando un esfuerzo económico sin precedentes el valle lleva a cabo la construcción de las 17 grandes edificaciones religiosas románicas que aún hoy conserva.

The running of the bulls is a Spanish tradition in Pamplona. It lasts 8 days and it all starts on July 6 exactly at midday when the mayor of Pamplona shoots a rocket. This is a sign that the celebration has started. The participants are dressed in white and they wear red neck-cloths and belts. They open champagne, mostly used for sprinkling other people. Then the situation becomes very wild. There are a lot of people on the street: sellers, gamblers, wind bands, giant puppets, singing Indians, thousands of locals and tourists. Their habit is drinking a lot of alcohol, especially red wine. The main event is running of the bulls or encierro in Spanish. It starts every day at eight in the morning near the Plaza Santo Domingo and they run, sometimes wildly, sometimes less. As a sign that the run has begun they shoot the first rocket. Then they shoot the second one when the bulls are out on the streets. Six bulls which are trying to attack the participants from behind run down the 900 meters long street to the bullring with a lot of spectators. The participants can also get hurt or even killed. All of the six bulls are going to be killed at the bull fight in the stadium with six other stronger bulls. The bull fights in the stadium begin at half past six in the afternoon. First, there comes the first bull. There is also a person called “picador”, who waves a red cloth in front of the bull. That makes the bull very nervous so it becomes very wild and starts to run all over the stadium.

Air Nostrum pone en marcha los vuelos especiales Barcelona-Pamplona por San Fermín La aerolínea refuerza su operación en Navarra con la programación del vuelo directo con Barcelona, el adelanto en unas semanas de la conexión con Tenerife y el incremento de la oferta desde Madrid La compañía vuela este año desde la capital navarra a la Ciudad Condal, Madrid, Menorca, Palma de Mallorca y Tenerife VALENCIA, 5 DE JULIO DE 2017 Air Nostrum, la aerolínea franquiciada de Iberia para vuelos regionales, pone en marcha mañana jueves la operación especial San Fermín con el arranque de la ruta Barcelona- Pamplona. El refuerzo de la operación de Air Nostrum en la capital navarra se concreta con la incorporación de nuevos destinos y el aumento de plazas. Coincidiendo con el inicio de las fiestas patronales, arranca la ruta Pamplona- Barcelona, un enlace que hace más de cuatro años que no opera la compañía y que se retoma con un total de catorce vuelos entre el 6 y el 20 de julio. Estos vuelos de Air Nostrum complementan los que realizará Vueling hoy y el 8 y 12 de julio. Las reservas de los vuelos de esta ruta están evolucionando conforme a las previsiones. Como dato destacado, conviene señalar que el 47% de los pasajeros son de conexión a otros destinos, fundamentalmente Canarias, Baleares y aeropuertos del resto de Europa. En cuanto a las reservas con destino Pamplona, el 20% se ha realizado desde Estados Unidos. También mañana Air Nostrum retoma la ruta Pamplona-Tenerife. Este enlace que viene operando la compañía los últimos cuatro años en la subtemporada de agosto adelanta este año su inicio unas semanas, lo que supone un incremento de un 45% de la oferta de plazas en relación al verano pasado.
