Well-known plants in each angiosperm order This list is generally from least evolved (most ancient) to most evolved (most modern). (I’m not sure if this applies for Eudicots; I’m listing them in the same order as APG II.) The first few plants are mostly primitive pond and aquarium plants. Next is Illicium (anise tree) from Austrobaileyales, then the magnoliids (Canellales thru Piperales), then monocots (Acorales through Zingiberales), and finally eudicots (Buxales through Dipsacales). The plants before the eudicots in this list are considered basal angiosperms. This list focuses only on angiosperms and does not look at earlier plants such as mosses, ferns, and conifers. Marrubium vulgare L. White horehound Family: Lamiaceae Range: Nearly all states, including all western states, except perhaps North Dakota. Found almost worldwide. Habitat: Pastures, fields, roadsides, rangeland, disturbed natural areas, waste places, ditches, and other disturbed places. Most often in dry places. White horehound is especially common in overgrazed areas. Origin: Native to Eurasia. White horehound was once cultivated as a medicinal herb and for flavoring candy. Impacts: Expands range during drought conditions, especially under heavy grazing. Once established, it can outcompete native vegetation and form dense stands in annual grasslands. Livestock avoid consuming the bitter-tasting foliage, and the plant thrives in the absence of competition with other vegetation. California Invasive Plant Council (Cal-IPC) Inventory: Limited Invasiveness White horehound is a cool-season perennial to 2 ft tall, often looking like a low shrub. It has densely hairy white-woolly stems, thick and square in cross-section, which mostly branch near the base of the plant. Its leaves are aromatic, opposite on the stems, ovate to nearly round, 0.5 to 2.5 inches long, with round-toothed margins. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Lamiaceae is the third largest family based on the taxon number and fourth largest family based on the species number in Turkey. The family has 48 genera and 782 taxa (603 species, 179 subspecies and varieties), 346 taxa (271 species, 75 subspecies and varieties) of which are endemic (ca. 44%) (data updated 1th February 2017) in the country. There are also 23 hybrid species, 19 of which are endemic (82%). The results proven that Turkey is one of the centers of diversity for Lamiaceae in the Old World. In addition, Turkey has about 10% of all Lamiaceae members in the World. The largest five genera in the country based on the taxon number are Stachys (118 taxa), Salvia (107 taxa), Sideritis (54 taxa), Phlomis (53 taxa) and Teucrium (49 taxa). According to taxon number, five genera with the highest endemism ratio are Dorystaechas (1 taxon, 100%), Lophantus (1 taxon, 100%), Sideritis (54 taxa, 74%), Drymosiphon (9 taxa, 67%), and Marrubium (27 taxa, 63%). There are two monotypic genera in Turkey as Dorystaechas and Pentapleura. Turkey sits on the junction of three phytogeographic regions with highly diverse climate and the other ecologic features. Phytogeographic distribution of Turkish Lamiaceae taxa are 293 taxa in the Mediterranean (37.4%), 267 taxa in the Irano-Turanian (36.7%), 90 taxa in the Euro-Siberian (Circumboreal) phytogeographic region, and 112 taxa in Unknown or Multiregional (14.3%) phytogeographical elements. -

Abstract Novel habitats, rare plants and root traits. by Paula Ann Greer The loss of native plant species through habitat loss has been happening in NZ since the arrival of humans. This is especially true in Canterbury where less than 1% of the lowland plains are believed to be covered in remnant native vegetation. Rural land uses are changing and farm intensification is creating novel habitats, including farm irrigation earth dams. Dam engineers prefer not to have plants growing on dams. Earth dams are consented for 100 years, they could be used to support threatened native plants. Within the farm conversion of the present study dams have created an average of 1.7 hectares of ‘new land’ on their outside slope alone, which is the area of my research. -

Rep. 60 (2008) -1- Birds of Namuli Mtn, Mozambique Survey of birds on Namuli Mountain (Mozambique), November 2007, with notes on vegetation and mammals Françoise Dowsett-Lemaire Summary Ornithological surveys were carried out on Namuli Mountain (peak 2419 m) from 14-27 November 2007. Most fo rest on Namuli is found above 1600 or 1700 m, to c. 1900 m (with scrubby forest to 2000 m or a little higher), with the largest block of Manho Forest (at least 1000 ha) spreading over the south-western slopes of the Muretha Plateau. Mid-altitude forest on the south-eastern slopes has been greatly reduced in recent decades by fires and clearance for agriculture. Other habitats include montane grassland (rather wet and peaty), small areas of montane shrubland, rocky outcrops and large granitic domes. The woody vegetation of the various forest types is described in some detail: the dominant emergents of Afromontane forest at 1600-1850 m are Faurea wentzeliana (new for Mozambique, at its sou thern limit of range) and Cryptocarya liebertiana , followed by Olea capensis . Albizia adianthifolia, Newtonia buchananii and Parinari excelsa are dominant in mid-altitude forest (1200-1450 m). Some notes on mammals observed are also included. The main base camp (15-24 November) was on Muretha Plateau at the altitude of 1860 m, in a mosaic of grass - land and small forest patches.
