  • Celebrating Mercer Near the Moon River
Celebrating Mercer Near the Moon River By Lesley Francis Even the aftermath of hurricane Matthew can’t stop the resi- dents of Skidaway Island from a great party at the Plantation Club – especially when that party celebrates the life and music of John- ny Mercer. The second annual “birthday party” takes place on the evening of Friday, November 18, which would have been Mercer’s 107th birthday (he died in 1976). The evening – “Hooray for Hollywood” (after Mercer’s 1938 hit song) – will feature a glamorous, Hollywood ‘30s art deco theme, and attendees are encouraged to dress ele- gantly. Plans for the evening include dinner, dancing, en- tertainment, a 50/50 raffle and a member/cash bar. Kim Michael Polote, winner of the 2001 American Tradi- tions Vocal Competition (ATVC) Gold Medal, 2006 Gold Medal winner and ATVC Artistic Consultant Vale Rideout, and 2014 Gold Medal winner Mik- ki Sodergren will delight attendees by perform- ing some of Mercer’s classics. Mercer resonates with many of us who reside on Skidaway Island, so close to the Moon River which inspired him to write one of his most famous songs. Mercer wrote “Moon River” (mu- sic by Henry Mancini) in 1961 for the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” winning his third Academy Award. Aside from this obvious connection, many of Mercer’s songs and lyrics 8 – VOL. 14 ISSUE 22 TheSkinnie www.theskinnie.com www.theskinnie.com 1422 Skinnie.indd 8 10/31/16 8:57 AM speak to the Southern way of life, its geography, nature, climate and man- bankruptcy, his father dedicated the rest of his life to paying off that debt, ners.

  • MGMT: Little Dark Age
MGMT: Little Dark Age spectrumculture.com/2018/02/11/mgmt-little-dark-age-review/ Daniel Bromfield One imagines a pang of dread shooting through the members of MGMT as their debut album, Oracular Spectacular, turned 10 last month. For better or for worse, Oracular Spectacular is now a classic, and its three titanic hit singles—“Kids,” “Time to Pretend” and “Electric Feel”—show no signs of going away. Most bands would be pleased to have a legacy set in stone, but MGMT have spent the better part of the last decade trying to distance themselves from pop stardom and prove to the world—or to themselves— that they’re a serious experimental band. They’ve succeeded, sort of. Though most of the world will always know MGMT for their hits, we no longer have any safe expectations for the “next MGMT album,” and it makes perfect sense that they’re ditching the psych-poppet affectations to reposition themselves as compadres of Ariel Pink and John Maus. Little Dark Age, the duo’s long-gestating fourth album, casts them as graveyard goths whose madcap sense of humor barely keeps the bad vibes at bay. That it works is a testament to just how unpredictable this band has become in its experimental period. This feels like the logical endpoint of the band’s hermeticism. While Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser once presented themselves as cult leaders, with “the handshake under our tongue,” here they’re more like mad prophets broadcasting their ravings to the world from a dingy basement. The music is mid-fi, shrouded in filters that feel like the musical embodiment of the band’s misanthropy, and the dominant instrument isn’t synth or guitar but Matt Asti’s bass, which burbles nauseously out of the gloom.

  • Rose La Rose and the Re-Ownership of American Burlesque, 1935-1972
TAUGHT IT TO THE TRADE: ROSE LA ROSE AND THE RE-OWNERSHIP OF AMERICAN BURLESQUE, 1935-1972 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Elizabeth Wellman Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Jennifer Schlueter, Advisor Beth Kattelman Joy Reilly Copyright by Elizabeth Wellman 2015 ABSTRACT Declaring burlesque dead has been a habit of the twentieth century. Robert C. Allen quoted an 1890s letter from the first burlesque star of the American stage, Lydia Thompson in Horrible Prettiness: Burlesque and American Culture (1991): “[B]urlesque as she knew it ‘has been retired for a time,’ its glories now ‘merely memories of the stage.’”1 In 1931, Bernard Sobel opined in Burleycue: An Underground History of Burlesque Days, “Alas! You will never get a chance to see one of the real burlesque shows again. They are gone forever…”2 In 1938, The Billboard published an editorial that began, “On every hand the cry is ‘Burlesque is dead.’”3 In fact, burlesque had been declared dead so often that editorials began popping up insisting it could be revived, as Joe Schoenfeld’s 1943 op-ed in Variety did: “[It] may be in a state of putrefaction, but it is a lusty and kicking decomposition.”4 It is this “lusty and kicking decomposition” which characterizes the published history of burlesque. Since its modern inception in the late nineteenth century, American burlesque has both been framed and framed itself within this narrative of degeneration.
