The World Stands on Three Things: , Service, and Good Deeds (Pirkei Avot)

Congregation Beth Shalom is a robust Jewish community, offering a variety of opportunities to pray, study and socialize. We are proud to offer programming that reflects the diversity of interests and backgrounds of our members.

Our classes are organized to offer unique opportunities that are appreciated by the greater Jewish community. From book clubs to cultural outings and Israel advocacy, study with the rabbis and our exceptional team of educated lay leaders, we are confident that you will find something to pique your interest.

After a long time of separation due to the pandemic, CBS strives to be a source of connection, healing, and strength. We will continue to offer digital programming, in-person and “hybrid” events, so that all of our members can find a comfortable way to participate.

We believe that there are many ways to get involved in Jewish community. Each touch point strengthens our kehillah (our Jewish community). This program guide will help you to plan for what we hope will be a satisfying journey through a year of learning and growth, in fellowship and friendship, sharing the pride of being part of the Jewish people.

By the way, if there is a class topic that you would like to see offered, that is not currently on our roster, please be in touch so that we can grow together as a community.

Livracha, in blessing and peace,

Kabbalat Shabbat and Shabbat Morning Services Shabbat services at Congregation Beth Shalom are held at 6:30 pm every Friday, and at 9:00 am every Sabbath morning. Our spirit-filled services include a blend of traditional and innovative prayers, drawing upon classic liturgical melodies as well as Hassidic style niggunim. Although the shared text is Sim Shalom, often the Rabbis infuse the service with alternative modes of prayer, including chanting and the use of silence.

Morning Minyan Perhaps the one activity at the Congregation Beth Shalom that never takes a vacation is the morning Minyan. We come together to maintain the century-old tradition of public worship. More often than not, the core group is joined by those who, in grief, come to praise the Almighty by means of the Mourners’ Kaddish.

Ruach Refresh: Women’s Rosh Hodesh 2.0 (re•new | mind. body. spirit) Monthly meetings at 7:00 pm @ CBS (in person and zoom) 10/7, 11/4, 12/2, 1/6, 2/3, 3/3, 4/7, 5/12, 6/2

What is a Women’s Rosh Hodesh Group? Rosh Hodesh refers to the ancient Festival of the New Moon. According to the Jewish tradition, every new month (new moon) is a sacred occasion for women in each generation to gather and celebrate as a reward for not participating in the sin of the Golden Calf, an event described in the Bible.

In contemporary times, Jewish women all over the world have adapted this celebration in a variety of ways to include a study session, creative exploration, or just a time to relax together. CBS women have been celebrating Rosh Hodesh for decades. This year, we are focusing our programming on "wellness for women", offering a sacred space to explore self-improvement through positive mind-set, creativity, healthy activity, wellness, and spirituality through a Jewish lens.

Who is this for? Jewish women (and friends), of all ages, seeking a spiritual, creative, inclusive, and positive community for a monthly get together in celebration of the Jewish festival of the new moon.

Religious School The Ethel Honigman Religious School provides Jewish education for kids in PK-7th grade. The Religious School is dedicated to providing its students with a comprehensive Jewish education, instilling an appreciation for and celebration of Jewish identity, and inspiring a commitment to ongoing Jewish life and learning.

The Ethel Honigman Religious School uses the national ShalomLearning curriculum for both Hebrew and Jewish studies, emphasizing Jewish practice, ethics and values, the study of Torah and sacred texts, Hebrew language, prayer, history, holidays, and Jewish culture. Additionally, we strive to create an environment of Ahavat Yisrael and Klal Yisrael – a caring and active involvement in the synagogue, local Jewish community, Israel, and the world-wide Jewish community. Our rabbis are an integral part of the school, and work alongside our teachers and tutors who have a broad knowledgebase and a deep passion for Judaism and Jewish values.

We are proud to be able to offer a highly personalized experience for our students, showing deep regard for the individual worth of each student, recognizing each students’ learning styles and ability level. As such, our Hebrew program for the 2020-2021 school year will be taught through private tutors, ensuring each student the greatest opportunity for success working at their level, ability, and pace. This teaching method is unique to our shul, not being offered in the greater Tampa Bay area.

CBS Betty Schoenbaum Shabbat B'Yachad

Rabbi Danielle Upbin leads us in prayer, encouraging our youth to participate actively in services designed especially for our youth and families. Services are held in the Biblical Garden. Preschool (Hebrew Haverim) Our movement-based Hebrew engagement program is designed for children in PS-1st grade. This program will use fun games and activities to teach children letter recognition, basic Hebrew phrases, and Hebrew word sets such as body parts, colors, shapes, days, months, and animals. This is a great way for our young learners to get a taste of Hebrew before formal instruction begins.

Teen Programming Our post-B’nai Mitzvah educational and social program enables 8th-12th grade teens to continue their Jewish journey by engaging in activities and discussions about topics most relevant to them. Topics include ethics and values, Israel, social justice, Jewish culture, and much more. We look forward to partnering with a few national organizations to expand our learning and social network as well.

Youth Groups

Our youth group programming for 3rd-12th grade is designed to engage our kids and teens in interactive, fun, and leadership building social programming, enabling them to more deeply connect with their Jewishness and the Jewish community at CBS and beyond. We offer our youth groups a variety of programs and activities appropriate for their age and group interests.

Youth Groups: Asefah345 (3rd-5th), CLUSY, Jr. ( 6th-8th), CLUSY (USY- 9th-12th) Our virtual programming for the fall is in collaboration with Congregation B’nai Israel, Temple B’nai Israel, Temple Beth-El, and the Federation of Florida’s Gulf Coast.
