Thank you for your continued support of The Center for African American History, Art and Culture (CAAHAC). Our mission is to preserve the Immanuel Institute Building and to create interactive programs of sight and sound that educate, inspire and demonstrate the many contributions of African Americans to Aiken County, South Carolina, and the region. Your contributions will help us complete CAAHAC and expand opportunities to impact the community. CAAHAC is poised to make a tremendous impact on the community and the State of South Carolina through education, interactive exhibits, strong programming, and events that educate and entertain. Our success rests solely on the continued efforts of the community. What have we been doing? In the past year, CAAHAC held five programs to benefit the community. • Art at the Center: This free arts and crafts afternoon was attended by over 75 community youth. Our volunteers from area non-profit agencies created arts and crafts projects that youth of all ages enjoyed. • Celebration of Aiken’s African American Excellence: We listened to renowned historian, Dr. Bobby Donaldson, talk about the history of African Americans in Aiken County and awarded community members for their service to CAAHAC. We also had jazz musicians playing as well as local artisans displaying their art and clothing. Despite tropical storm conditions, about 70 people attended the event. • African American Poets’ Corner: This spoken word and poetry event was held as a part of Aiken City Limits. Attendees were mesmerized with the poetry of Willie Alma Finnie and readings of Mattie Curry Tolliver. • at the Center: We served well over 50 youth during the course of one hour. With the help of sponsors we provided healthy snacks, , personal care items, and gloves for all the youth who attended. • Dr. King, Jr. 5 Days of Service: This initiative was sponsored by University of South Carolina Aiken and Aiken Technical College. We invited college students to a lecture about the history of CAAHAC and in turn they volunteered to help us with several beautification projects. What’s new? We have quite a few new things happening at CAAHAC. • Check out our newly designed website at www.caahac.org! • Renovations to the first floor are almost complete. Work has begun on the African Village and Middle Passage Experience and we are planning to install our new elevator and stairwell to allow for easier access to our upstairs future event space. Upcoming Events! SAVE THE DATE for our Juneteenth Celebration! On June 22, 2019 we will celebrate Juneteenth. CAAHAC’s Juneteenth Celebration 2019 will be the premier Juneteenth celebration in the city of Aiken. The Juneteenth Celebration at CAAHAC will be a festive and celebratory event commemorating the end of enslavement. Juneteenth is generally a time of reflection, remembrance, and jubilee. We anticipate the same for this event and it will be open to everyone. We are excited to work with our community partners, the Aiken County Branch of the NAACP and the Aiken Chapter of The Links, Incorporated to produce an amazing event with cultural demonstrations, artists, musical performances, and local food and clothing vendors. CAAHAC has held this event almost yearly since 2007 with the help of partners like you. Please see the next page for ways you can help us ensure Juneteenth 2019 will be successful! CAAHAC a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. EIN number: 80-0760009

I want to financially support CAAHAC’s Juneteenth Celebration. The primary reason to hold this celebration is to educate children and adults about the complexity of African American life through history, art, and cultural presentations. We hope that this event will engage youth and encourage them to become interested in the history, art, and culture of African Americans. Thank you for your support!
