Meijer, Literature of the Low Countries vii Preface In any definition of terms, Dutch literature must be taken to mean all literature written in Dutch, thus excluding literature in Frisian, even though Friesland is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in the same way as literature in Welsh would be excluded from a history of English literature. Similarly, literature in Afrikaans (South African Dutch) falls outside the scope of this book, as Afrikaans from the moment of its birth out of seventeenth-century Dutch grew up independently and must be regarded as a language in its own right. Dutch literature, then, is the literature written in Dutch as spoken in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the so-called Flemish part of the Kingdom of Belgium, that is the area north of the linguistic frontier which runs east-west through Belgium passing slightly south of Brussels. For the modern period this definition is clear anough, but for former times it needs some explanation. What do we mean, for example, when we use the term ‘Dutch’ for the medieval period? In the Middle Ages there was no standard Dutch language, and when the term ‘Dutch’ is used in a medieval context it is a kind of collective word indicating a number of different but closely related Frankish dialects.

Bij het begin van een Gezellejaar Woord vooraf Begin augustus 1998 ontdekten Tony Morren en Peter Aspeslagh in de afdeling Westflandrica van de Bibliotheek Albrecht Rodenbach in Roeselare vier autografen van Guido Gezelle. Bij nader toezicht bleek dat één van deze manuscripten een gedicht bevatte dat tot nog toe onbekend was. Het is een groot genoegen voor ons dat we dit nieuwe Gezellegedicht in ons tijdschrift kunnen opnemen, samen met een interessante interpretatie van dit context-gebonden vers dat de fascinerende titel Keerselucht draagt. Terzelfder tijd brengen we op het voorplat van deze aflevering het handschrift van een van de andere gedichten die bij die gelegenheid ontdekt werden, met name een gedicht waarin Gezelle de lof zwaait voor Constance Teichmann. Een variant van dit gedicht was bekend en opgenomen in het Verzameld Dichtwerk (deel VI, pp. 392-393). Vooral in de laatste strofe constateren we enkele opvallende verschillen tussen de pas ontdekte versie en de eerder gepubliceerde tekst. In de regels 13 tot 16 introduceert Gezelle hier immers een Parijse Sarah en contrasteert haar met de deugdzame filantrope en kunstbeschermster Constance Teichmann (Antwerpen 1824-id. 1896). Deze tijdgenote van Gezelle steunde Vlaamse kunstenaars zoals Peter Benoit en Edgar Tinel en droeg bij tot de opleving van de kerkelijke muziek. Tijdens de cholera-epidemieën werkte ze als verpleegster bij de eenvoudige bevolking waardoor ze de bijnaam ‘engel van liefdadigheid’ toebedeeld kreeg.

    Fonds Raf Seys . Inventarisatie door J. Heus met assistentie van Hadoc-vrijwilligers. Het omvangrijke, overwegend papieren archief van Raf Seys (verder telkens RS) werd op vraag van het gemeentebestuur geïnventariseerd (februari 2012- ). Nagenoeg het volledige archief (x m) vormt een apart fonds, dat in het gemeentearchief is ingepast. Documenten betreffende de lokale afdeling van het Willemsfonds en de heemkundige kring Coclariensia zijn geïntegreerd in het Hadoc-archief (o.m. affiches). Ook publicaties (boeken, tijdschriften) met historische of heemkundige inslag zijn in de Hadocbibliotheek onder een aparte registratie opgenomen. Werkwijze: schonen, dubbels eruit, samenhang respecteren in de aangetroffen mappen of bundels; opbergen in archiefdozen. Veel fotografisch materiaal werd eruit verwijderd en ingevoerd op de beeldbank “Koekelare Verbeeldt” (verantwoordelijke Bernard Lootens) met verwijzingen naar de indeling volgens hiernavolgende categorieën: - FRS / LIT : documenten i.v.m. de literaire bezigheden van RS; hierbij ook de bundel met Lexicon van Westvlaamse beeldende kunstenaars1, omdat die organisch aansluit bij de bundels met documenten over de reeks Lexicons van Westvlaamse Schrijvers. (p. 2- p. 24) - FRS / KOLL : documentatie omtrent publicaties van RS over Käthe Kollwitz en de installatie van een collectie lithografieën van Käthe Kollwitz in het cultureel centrum De Brouwerij in Koekelare. (p. 25-26) - FRS / HEEM : heemkundige documentatie. (p.26-29) - FRS / SCHOOL : bescheiden over schoolaangelegenheden van het Rijks- /Gemeenschapsonderwijs in Torhout en Koekelare.     POEMS OF GUIDO GEZELLE GUIDO OF POEMS EDITED BY PAUL VINCENT he Bruges-born poet-priest Guido Gezelle (1830–1899) is generally T considered one of the masters of nineteenth-century European lyric poetry. At the end of his life and in the first two decades of the twentieth century, Gezelle was hailed by the avant-garde as the founder of modern Flemish poetry. His unique voice was belatedly recognised in the Netherlands and often compared with his English contemporary Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–1889). In this bilingual anthology, award-winning translator Paul Vincent selects a representative picture of Gezelle’s output, from devotional through narrative, to celebratory and expressionistic. Gezelle’s favourite themes are POEMS childhood, the Flemish landscape, friendship, nature, religion and the Flemish vernacular, and his apparently simple poems conceal a sophisticated prosody and a dialogue with spiritual and literary tradition. However, an important barrier to wider international recognition of his lyric genius up to now has been the absence of translations that do justice to the vigour and musicality of Gezelle’s West Flemish idiom. Two of the OF translations included here go some way to redressing the balance: ‘The Watter-Scriever’ by Scotland’s national poet Edwin Morgan and ‘A Little ANTHOLOGY A BILINGU Leaf . .’ by Francis Jones. Both translators make brilliant use of their own vernaculars (Glaswegian and North Yorkshire respectively) to bring Gezelle to life for the non-Dutch-speaking reader.     Fonds Raf Seys . Inventarisatie door J. Heus met assistentie van HADOCK-vrijwilligers. Het omvangrijke, overwegend papieren archief van Raf Seys (verder telkens RS) werd op vraag van het gemeentebestuur door vzw Spaenhiers geïnventariseerd. Fase 1 met zolderdocumenten verliep van februari tot december 2012. Fase 2 met bureaudocumenten werd in 2013 en 2014 uitgevoerd. De documenten zijn ondergebracht in het Fonds Raf Seys, dat een apart deel in het gemeentearchief vormt. Het meet ca. 26 m. Documenten betreffende de lokale afdeling van het Willemsfonds en de heemkundige kring Coclariensia zijn meestal geïntegreerd in het HADOCK-archief (o.m. affiches). Een aantal publicaties (boeken, tijdschriften) met historische of heemkundige inslag zijn – met oog op de bruikbaarheid - in de HADOCK-bibliotheek onder een aparte registratie opgenomen. De fotocollectie wordt op de beeldbank “Koekelare Verbeeldt” geplaatst (verantwoordelijke Bernard Lootens). Van de dotatie Sylvain Maes / Tielt (1989-1991), een bundel 18e- en 19e- eeuwse notariële akten, zijn er enkele stukken met betrekking tot Koekelaarse inwoners in het HADOCK opgenomen (met vermelding S. Maes); het gros werd aan het Rijksarchief overgemaakt. Tot slot zijn drie vlaggen (Vlaamse Leeuw, bezanten- en gildevlag, zie beschrijving Kleurig Erfgoed en de aanvulling) bij de vlaggencollectie van het HADOCK gevoegd. Werkwijze bij het inventariseren: schonen, dubbels eruit, samenhang respecteren in de aan- getroffen mappen of bundels, opbergen in archiefdozen gemerkt met de stempel van RS. De documenten werden volgens de acht onderstaande rubrieken ingedeeld. Elke rubriek heeft een aparte nummering voor de dozen. In elke doos kregen de documenten, gebundeld in mappen, een plaatsnummer. De gebruiker vindt in de inventaris een beschrijving van de inhoud van elke map, zodat gericht zoeken mogelijk is.

Deel 1 romain vanlandschoot ter inleiding. verstrengeling van literatuur en maatschappelijke vertogen1 Op 4 november 1894 kreeg pastoor Hugo Verriest in Wakken het bezoek van een Brusselse delegatie met de dichter Prosper Van Langendonck en de schrijver Alfred Hegenscheidt als belangrijkste gesprekspartners. Zij vertegenwoordigden de redactie van Van Nu en Straks. Het onderhoud liep over literatuur en Vlaamse beweging, en vanzelfsprekend over de politieke actualiteit van die dagen: de voorbije verkiezingen, die de eerste waren bij algemeen (meervoudig) stemrecht met de doorbraak van het socialisme en in mindere mate de christendemocratie. Het gesprek lag aan de oorsprong van de vele Brusselse contacten die voor Verriest nog zouden volgen, niet het minst met August Vermeylen. Vanaf 1897 begon een intense briefwisseling en samenwerking die zou duren tot aan de vooravond van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Verriest (1840-1922) raakte toen bekend over heel Vlaanderen. Men zag in hem de ideale leerling van Guido Gezelle en de grote leraar van Albrecht Rodenbach. Het meest besproken feit uit zijn Roeselaarse leraarsperiode is de zgn. ‘Groote Stooringe’ (1875) rondom Rodenbach. Dit is het jaar van het ontstaan van de Blauwvoeterie, de aanvang van een katholieke Vlaamse studentenbeweging in West-Vlaanderen en van het tijdschrift De Vlaamsche Vlagge. De invloed ervan op de toenmalige leerlingengeneratie is bepalend geweest.2 De samenwerking tussen Verriest en Vermeylen toont aan dat de ‘pastoor van te lande’ meer in zijn mars had dan de leiding van een studententijdschrift of de bezieling van een jongerenbeweging of zelfs de grenzeloze bewondering voor 1.
