Acta Biologica Sibirica 6: 229–247. https://doi.org/10.3897/abs.6.e54139 Abstract An annotated list of Orthopteroidea of rise paddy fields in Kyzylorda oblast in South Kazakhstan is given. A total of 60 species of orthopteroid insects were identified, belonging to 58 genera from 17 families and 5 orders. Mantids are represented by 3 families, 6 genera and 6 species; cockroaches – by 2 families, 2 genera and 2 species; earwigs – by 3 families, 3 genera and 3 species; sticks insects – by 1 family, 1 genus and 1 species. Orthopterans are most numerous (8 families, 46 genera and 48 species). Of these, three species, Bolivaria brachyptera, Hierodula tenuidentata and Ceraeocercus fuscipennis, are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Celes variabilis and Chrysochraon dispar indicated for the first time for a given location. The fauna of orthopteroid insects in the studied areas of Kyzylorda is compared with other regions of Kazakhstan. -

Arthropod Grasping and Manipulation A Literature Review Aaron M. Dollar Harvard BioRobotics Laboratory Technical Report Department of Engineering and Applied Sciences Harvard University April 5, 2001 www.biorobotics.harvard.edu Introduction The purpose of this review is to report on the existing literature on the subject of arthropod grasping and manipulation. In order to gain a proper understanding of the state of the knowledge in this rather broad topic, it is necessary and appropriate to take a step backwards and become familiar with the basics of entomology and arthropod physiology. Once these principles have been understood it will then be possible to proceed towards the more specific literature that has been published in the field. The structure of the review follows this strategy. General background information will be presented first, followed by successively more specific topics, and ending with a review of the refereed journal articles related to arthropod grasping and manipulation. Background The phylum Arthropoda is the largest of the phyla, and includes all animals that have an exoskeleton, a segmented body in series, and six or more jointed legs. There are nine classes within the phylum, five of which the average human is relatively familiar with – insects, arachnids, crustaceans, centipedes, and millipedes. Of all known species of animals on the planet, 82% are arthropods (c. 980,000 species)! And this number just reflects the known species. Estimates put the number of arthropod species remaining to be discovered and named at around 9-30 million, or 10-30 times more than are currently known. And this is just the number of species; the population of each is another matter altogether. -

MOULDS Australian Museum, 6 College Street, Sydney NSW 2010, Australia [email protected] ABSTRACT. The history of cicada family classification is reviewed and the current status of all previously proposed families and subfamilies summarized. All tribal rankings associated with the Australian fauna are similarly documented. A cladistic analysis of generic relationships has been used to test the validity of currently held views on family and subfamily groupings. The analysis has been based upon an exhaustive study of nymphal and adult morphology, including both external and internal adult structures, and the first comparative study of male and female internal reproductive systems is included. Only two families are justified, the Tettigarctidae and Cicadidae. The latter are here considered to comprise three subfamilies, the Cicadinae, Cicadettinae n.stat. (= Tibicininae auct.) and the Tettigadinae (encompassing the Tibicinini, Platypediidae and Tettigadidae). Of particular note is the transfer of Tibicina Amyot, the type genus of the subfamily Tibicininae, to the subfamily Tettigadinae. The subfamily Plautillinae (containing only the genus Plautilla) is now placed at tribal rank within the Cicadinae. The subtribe Ydiellaria is raised to tribal rank. The American genus Magicicada Davis, previously of the tribe Tibicinini, now falls within the Taphurini. Three new tribes are recognized within the Australian fauna, the Tamasini n.tribe to accommodate Tamasa Distant and Parnkalla Distant, Jassopsaltriini n.tribe to accommodate Jassopsaltria Ashton and Burbungini n.tribe to accommodate Burbunga Distant. -

For decades it was assumed that the eastern range limit of the spe- cies reaches until the Pacific Coast of the Eurasian continent. However, STOROZ- HENKO (1994) provided evidence for the assumption that T. viridssima reaches its eastern distribution border at the Altai Mts. Based on this study the long winged Tettigonia species living in the eastern most part of Eurasia must be classified as Tettigonia dolichoptera on the mainland and as Tettigonia orientalis (or other Tet- tigonia species of the T. orientalis group) in Japan. The three species T. viri- dissima, T. dolichoptera and T. orientalis are similar with respect to wing length, but they can be cleary distinguished by cercus length, shape of tegmina and song traits. Zusammenfassung Tettigonia viridissima ist eine paläarktische Art, die jedoch nicht bis zur Pazifik- küste des eurasischen Kontinents vorkommt. Die östliche Grenze ihres Vorkom- mens liegt nach STOROZHENKO (1994) im Altai-Gebirge, aber diese Information wurde lange übersehen. -

Summarizing all published and their own unpublished data, the species is known from 17 localities in nine mapping squares of the Slo- vak Fauna Databank (2.1% of all squares). Tettigonia caudata was found on 16 localities in 2000–2006 (15 had been known before 2000). Alltogether, the spe- cies is now known from 29 localities in 20 mapping squares (4.6%). For these species which are vulnerable in Slovakia, the habitat choice, accompanying spe- cies, abundance and phenology were analysed. Zusammenfassung In den Jahren 2005 bis 2006 haben die Autoren die Art Gampsocleis glabra an zwölf Fundorten nachgewiesen (nur sechs Lokalitäten waren vor dem Jahr 2005 bekannt). Mit diesen und allen bisher publizierten Nachweisen wurde die Art insgesamt an 17 Fundorten in neun Kartenblatt-Quadraten der Slowakischen Fauna-Datenbank registriert (2.1% aller slowakischen Quadrate). Tettigonia cau- data wurde von 2000 bis 2006 an 16 neuen Fundorten nachgewiesen (vor 2000 waren 15 bekannt). -

The genus Eupholidoptera includes 46 Mediterranean species distributed from Turkey to Greece, Italy and southern France. In the eastern part of its range, Eupholidoptera has been considered to consist of several distinct species, while in the Balkans and Italian peninsula only E. chabrieri has been recognized. However, the status of some Italian populations, confined to particular geographic areas, remains uncertain. To investigate the delimitation of the Italian taxa of Eupholidoptera,we performed both morphological and molecular analyses. Morphological analysis was carried out by considering diagnostic characters usually used to distinguish different taxa, such as the shape of titillators in males and the subgenital plate in females. Molecular analysis was performed by sequencing three mitochondrial genes: 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, partially sequenced and the entire gene of cox1 . Molecular markers were used to infer phylogenetic relationships among the Italian Eupholidoptera species and to reconstruct the historical processes that shaped their current geographic distribution. Results from both morphological and molecular analyses were used to revise the taxonomic arrangement of species. On the whole we were able to distinguish nine lineages of Italian Eupholidoptera, of which E. tyrrhenica sp.n. from Corsica is described as a new species. This combined terminology has potential for use in automated identification systems, evolutionary studies, and other use cases where the synthesis of bioacoustic traits from the literature is required. An example implementation has been developed for the BioAcoustica platform. It is hoped that future development of controlled vocabularies will become a community effort.
