Welcome to the 2021 Lenten Devotional National City Christian Church is honored to make this Lenten Devotional available to you in print, via email, and through our church website. Speaking of Sin – A Lenten Conversation Aurelius Prudentis Clemens was a Roman Christian who practiced law and served in government for most of his life. Toward the end of his life, he retired to become an ascetic, fasting every day until evening and abstaining entirely from meat. He spent his time writing poems and songs, along with some scholarly treatises about Christian faith. One idea he wrote about was the seven deadly sins, those sinful behaviors that church leaders had identified as the definitive list that would lead human beings straight to hell. Lots of famous writers chose sin as their topic (Dante, anyone?), but Prudentis created a model of sin...and its antidote. In 410 AD he suggested the following as solutions to these sins:

Humility cures Pride Kindness cures Envy Abstinence (or Moderation) cures Gluttony Chastity (Putting Others First) cures Lust Patience cures Wrath Liberality (Generosity) cures Greed Diligence cures Sloth

You can see that I’ve taken liberty with a few of his solutions, but as we think about sin this Lent, perhaps it’s helpful to consider practices we can cultivate in our lives that live on as antidotes to sin. Take some time during the next six weeks to exhibit each one of Prudentis’ antidotes in your life...and see what happens! Rev. Dr. Amy Butler Interim Senior Minister
