During the academic year of 1973-1974, the Seminary's 50th Anniversary, President Frank B. Stanger encouraged the celebration through two different series of lectures. The first was to assign various faculty members key theological topics and have them present scholarly papers at Estes Chapel throughout the year. These papers were separately published in The Asbury Seminarian at the time, but never together as a collection, until now. These papers are presented here in the order in which they were given. Some unnamed librarian in the B.L. Fisher Library collected the typed papers and had them bound together with a flyer about the 50th Anniversary celebration. Finding this volume was the event that encouraged us to publish this collection as a new edition. Many of the names in this volume are illustrious names from Asbury's past that will be familiar to many alumni. I have the fortunate pleasure to know two of these men who are still present at Asbury Theological Seminary in this our 90th year. Both Dr. Kenneth C. Kinghorn ii I Preface and Dr. Robert E. Coleman are retired, but still active on campus and occasionally teaching. Their passion for the Kingdom of God is still evident in their lives today as a testimony of the power of the Holy Spirit to transform lives through the teaching ministry of Asbury Theological Seminary. The second special series of lectures encouraged by Dr. Stanger occurred during the week of March 11-15, 1974. Although no written papers or sermons are available for publication, these lecture were recorded and are now available electronically on First fruits Press under the Heritage Material (place .asbu rysem inary.ed ujfirstfru itsheritagemateria I). Fou r important names in the history of the Church of the 20th Century were present on campus at the same time. Anglican theologian and scholar of the New Testament, C.F.D. Moule (1908-2007) from Cambridge University came and spoke on the topic "Whither Christology?" The Anglican missionary, bishop, and scholar of Church History, Stephen Neill (1900-1984) gave a presentation on "Whither Mission?" One of the greatest American Methodist theologians, Dr. Albert C. Outler (1908- 1989), known for his scholarship of Wesley, spoke on the topic, "Wither Wesleyan Theology?" Bishop Roy C. Nichols (1918- 2002), the first African-American bishop of the United Methodist Church, conducted preaching during the week. It must have been an inspiring week for students, faculty, staff, and alumni to hear these four influential voices of the Church. As we enter our 90th year as a Seminary, we face a world with many new challenges, but still impacted by the same problems of sin. Asbury Theological Seminary has always held fast to the idea that our hope lies in Jesus Christ and the Good News preached through scripture. These essays are a reminder, that even in this new millennium, some truths never change. As we look to the future, let us also remember the heritage from which we come as we read these timely messages from forty year ago. Herbert Livingston September 12, 1973 1 2 I Biblical Authority The basic purpose of this lecture is to probe the phenomenon of authority, which pervades both the Old and the New Testaments. The authority of the Scriptures has been at the center of debate and commitment within the believing community through the ages. Authority remains as one of the most crucial elements of the acceptance of Christianity in the modern world. Briefly, the discussion will touch upon the following conceptual categories of biblical authority: (a) the biblical means of portrayal of the God of authority, (b) the credentials of selected persons through whom authority was channeled, (c) the authenticating marks of God's messages as authoritative, (d) the alternatives facing those who receive the authoritative message, whether in oral and/or written form, and (e) the burden resting on ministers today to proclaim an authoritative word. In regard to the first three and the fifth of these categories, three elements will be discussed, (a) the right to exercise authority, (b) the power to carry out authority, and (c) the integrity which undergirds authority. In the fourth category, those factors which account for variations in the response of the audience to which God's word and action is directed will be examined. Due to limitations of time, the observations presented here must be general in nature; affirmations must be compressed and concise. The temptation to supply careful exegetical support for each statement and to draw upon many biblical stories and speeches for illustrations is great. This temptation has been resisted.     GOD MADE THE WORLD Genesis 1:1-19 IN the very beginning there was nothing at all. Darkness was everywhere. Then God created the heaven and the earth. On the first day of His Creation God said, "Let there be light," and there was light! God called the light Day and the darkness Night. On the second day of God's Creation, He wanted a sky to separate the water that was everywhere. He kept just enough water under the sky to use on His world. All the rest of the water He put high above the sky. God named the big sky Heaven. Whenever we look up into the sky and see the clear blue color, or the fluffy white clouds, or even the refreshing rain coming down we can know that God made it for us. The third day was when God told the water under the sky to move together so dry land could be put in place. He named the dry land Earth. God put the water in oceans, lakes, rivers, and streams. He told the green grass and trees of every kind to start growing. It must have looked like a beautiful garden with all the different colors of flowers. God made seeds in everything that grew. That way, He knew that if someone wanted grass to grow they could just plant grass seeds. Or, if someone wanted an apple tree they could just plant apple seeds. God knew it was just what His world needed. On the fourth day He told some special lights to shine in the sky.

We’re all aware that rates of addiction and death from addiction are climbing around the United States. Many if not most of us in New Hampshire can recount personal experiences of death from opiate and other addictions in our families, churches, and communities. Addiction is a disease that affects the whole person, body, mind, and spirit. In my eight years of serving as chaplain in a drug and alcohol residential facility, I discovered that before women and men die from overdose or alcohol or cocaine-related diseases, their spirits have been grievously wounded. And so here is my answer to the question above: We as clergy and faithful lay people are uniquely positioned for the work of healing spirits. When we do so we follow directly in the footsteps of Jesus and his loving ministry of healing and exorcism. Most of us, clergy or lay, do not have the tools to help with the body or mind part of the disease. But for millennia the church has studied the ways of the Spirit and how the movements of the Spirit can be nurtured in individuals and communities. I believe that offering sacred rituals like a Recovery Eucharist or Prayer Service is one way that we as followers of Christ can serve those who suffer.

    Why an Advent Devotional? Here is our first Advent Devotional: a home-grown collection of our own stories with devotions, meant to encourage us all—families and individuals—to take time at home to remember what Christ's birth means. There are many ways that we can devote ourselves to God; some of these practices may speak to your spirit more than others, and that’s ok. Our differences help us grow. We all desire to have authentic spiritual experiences with God. An Advent devotional booklet is a wonderful resource that can help us be present to life and to God in new ways. Advent gives us an opportunity to engage our minds with all five senses to more fully experience God. Why not invest a little of your time in slowing your breath, quieting your mind and calming your heart during this busy season, by praying and reading an authentic experience of the Divine in your midst? As a church family, we will walk and pray together through the Advent stories written in this booklet. Our sincere hope and prayer for you in this season is that your heart would be drawn to behold the beauty of Jesus as you reflect on ways to renew your hope in Christ and strive to deepen your appreciation of God’s reconciling gift to us of God’s beloved son. Advent is a season devoted to preparation, a time to ready our hearts for the birth of Christ. Devotion takes practice.
